If you want black-and-white files straight from the camera, choose a dedicated monochrome model such as the Ricoh GR IV Monochrome, Leica Q3 Monochrom, or Leica M11 Monochrom. These cameras do not capture color. If you want black-and-white looks without giving up color photography, the Fujifilm X100VI is the more flexible choice: its ACROS and MONOCHROME modes render images in black and white using a color-capable camera.
That distinction matters more than any single “best” label. The right camera depends on whether you want a pocketable fixed-lens compact, a premium 28mm camera, or an interchangeable-lens rangefinder—and whether you are willing to commit to monochrome-only capture.
How to choose a black-and-white camera
A dedicated monochrome sensor records monochrome images; it cannot produce color photographs. Leica describes its approach as avoiding a color-filter mosaic and interpolation, but that is the manufacturer’s explanation, not a universal independent test result. A color-capable camera’s monochrome simulation is instead an in-camera rendering option. It can give you a black-and-white workflow while leaving color capture available.

Next, consider how you work. A fixed lens keeps the camera self-contained but limits framing choices. An interchangeable-lens body offers more options but adds decisions and expense. Viewfinder style, size, and handling preference are personal factors; where the cited material does not establish a specific detail, it is better to check the camera in person than to assume it will suit you.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
- Choose dedicated monochrome if you deliberately want every photograph to be black and white and value a camera built specifically for that output.
- Choose a color-capable camera with monochrome modes if you want to switch between color and black and white or are still exploring your preferred look.
- Match the lens setup to your style: a fixed 28mm suits photographers comfortable with that field of view; an interchangeable-lens rangefinder gives more focal-length choice.
- Check current price and stock before buying. Prices and availability change, and no current price comparison is established here.
Four cameras to consider, plus a beginner alternative
The options below are organized by the kind of photographer they suit, not as a universal image-quality ranking. The cited sources support four current contenders directly. The Olympus is included separately as a beginner alternative because its current availability and successor status have not been confirmed.
| Camera | Capture approach | Lens setup | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ricoh GR IV Monochrome | Dedicated monochrome sensor | Fixed-lens compact | Dedicated black-and-white shooting in a small compact body | Cannot capture color |
| Leica Q3 Monochrom | Dedicated monochrome sensor | Fixed 28mm f/1.7 ASPH lens, according to Tom’s Guide | Premium fixed-lens monochrome photography | Cannot capture color; fixed focal length |
| Leica M11 Monochrom | Dedicated monochrome sensor | Interchangeable M-mount lenses | Photographers who want a monochrome rangefinder and lens choice | Cannot capture color; rangefinder system and lenses add complexity and expense |
| Fujifilm X100VI | Color-capable sensor with monochrome simulations | Fixed lens | Black-and-white film-like looks with the option to shoot color | Its monochrome modes are simulations, not a dedicated monochrome sensor |
| Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV | Not established in the cited beginner recommendation | Not established here | A beginner alternative listed by Amateur Photographer | Current availability and successor status are unconfirmed |
Best dedicated pocketable pick: Ricoh GR IV Monochrome
Amateur Photographer’s guide, updated in July 2026, places the Ricoh GR IV Monochrome first overall among its black-and-white picks. It is a compact with a dedicated APS-C monochrome sensor, a built-in switchable red filter, and monochrome-only capture. That makes it the clearest fit here for someone who wants a small camera devoted to black-and-white photography rather than a color camera with a black-and-white setting.
Rank #2
- Monochrome-dedicated image sensor: Exclusively designed for black and white photography, the 25.74MP monochrome-dedicated APS-C CMOS image sensor achieves nuanced detail, high resolution, and exceptional reproduction of tones for outstanding monochrome rendering
- Dedicated monochrome image processing: GR ENGINE 7 maximizes the performance of the monochrome-dedicated image sensor, making full use of the brightness information captured by each pixel
- GR Lens: 28mm F2.8 GR Lens (in the 35mm format) delivers exceptional imaging performance with edge-to-edge sharpness
- Expressive high-ISO imaging to maximum ISO 409600: Even at high sensitivities, image detail remains abundant
- Image Control Options for Monochrome: New Image Control options Solid and Grainy have been developed to bring out the unique appeal of black and white photography
Amateur Photographer reports 25.7 megapixels, a weight of 262g, 4fps shooting, and an ISO range of 160–409,600. Those are figures reported by that guide, not results from independent testing for this article. Its portability and fixed-lens approach suit photographers who prefer carrying one compact camera; the trade-off is that neither color output nor the flexibility of changing lenses is available.

Best premium fixed-lens pick: Leica Q3 Monochrom
Tom’s Guide describes the Leica Q3 Monochrom as a dedicated monochrome camera with a fixed Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH lens. It suits a photographer who wants a premium fixed-lens camera and is comfortable composing with a 28mm field of view rather than changing lenses or focal lengths.

Just insert an SD card and power on instantly to capture wonderful moments with family and friends. The constraint is fundamental: it records monochrome images only. If you sometimes need color, a simulation-capable camera is a more flexible choice. Tom’s Guide’s price examples are point-in-time figures and are not repeated here as current prices.
Best interchangeable-lens monochrome rangefinder: Leica M11 Monochrom
The Leica M11 Monochrom is the option for photographers who specifically want a monochrome rangefinder and the ability to choose M-mount lenses. Leica’s official specifications describe a BSI CMOS sensor designed for black-and-white photography, Triple Resolution output at 60, 36, or 18 megapixels, and ISO 125–200,000.

Those figures are Leica’s product specifications, not comparative test results. The M-mount system offers lens choice, but it also means selecting and acquiring lenses and becoming comfortable with rangefinder operation. As with the other dedicated models, the M11 Monochrom does not capture color.
Best color-capable choice for a black-and-white film look: Fujifilm X100VI
The Fujifilm X100VI is the flexible pick for someone who wants in-camera black-and-white looks but does not want to give up color photography. Fujifilm’s MONOCHROME and ACROS modes are film simulations on a color-capable camera; they do not turn its sensor into a dedicated monochrome sensor.

Fujifilm says MONOCHROME produces “slightly smoother results,” while ACROS is “punchier and more dynamic, with slightly higher contrast.” Its modes include yellow, red, and green variants that imitate the tonal effects of colored filters, plus highlight-tone and shadow-tone adjustments. These controls give you ways to shape the rendered black-and-white look in camera while retaining the option to shoot in color.
