For household calcium, lime and surface-rust buildup, CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover is a documented option—not a proven overall winner. CLR Brands lists compatible uses and materials, but the available evidence does not establish a head-to-head ranking against other removers. Choose by stain, surface and application format, then follow the exact product label.
Which remover should you choose?
Start with the surface and the stain, not a broad “best” claim. CLR Brands’ household liquid is intended for calcium, lime and surface-rust deposits on certain listed fixtures and appliances. Its product family also includes ready-to-use spray, Free & Clear, and cling spray versions. These formats may suit different applications, but their directions and compatibility should not be assumed to be identical.
- Household liquid: A general-use option for listed fixtures and appliances; the manufacturer directs users to dilute it for general use.
- Ready-to-use spray: A spray format for convenient surface application. Check that version’s label before use.
- Free & Clear: A version described by the manufacturer as dye- and fragrance-free. Confirm its own directions and surface list.
- Cling spray: A format intended for vertical or hard-to-reach areas. Verify the dwell time and rinse directions on its label.
CLR Brands lists the household product for uses including bathtubs, toilet bowls, sinks, glass, chrome, fiberglass, stainless steel, humidifiers, dishwashers, washing machines and shower heads. See the manufacturer’s product information and follow the directions for the specific version you buy.

Check surface compatibility before applying it
For the household liquid, CLR Brands lists materials such as chrome, fiberglass, porcelain and stainless steel as compatible, subject to the product directions and a spot test. The manufacturer says not to use it on wood, clothing, wallpaper, carpeting, natural stone, brass, copper, aluminum, galvanized metals, or painted, coated or sealed surfaces.

- PROFESSIONAL HARD WATER STAIN REMOVER: Get the powerful industrial and commercial strength that takes stains, spots, and rust out! Remove years of unwanted hard minerals
- Form: Aerosol
- For: Windows, Tile/Grout, Glass
- Features: Eco Friendly
The product page also identifies steam irons, steamers, steam machines, radiators and ice makers as unsuitable uses. For an appliance with internal components, check the appliance maker’s instructions as well as the cleaner’s label; a surface list does not establish that every internal part is safe to treat.
If you cannot identify a surface or its finish, do not assume it is compatible. Spot-test a hidden area as directed, and do not proceed if the finish reacts or changes.

How to use the household liquid
- Work in a well-ventilated area. Read the exact product label and check the surface or appliance maker’s instructions.
- For general use, mix equal parts CLR household liquid and warm water, as the manufacturer directs.
- Test a small, inconspicuous area first.
- Apply with a brush, cloth or sponge. Leave the solution on for no more than two minutes.
- Rinse promptly and thoroughly with cold water.
Do not mix CLR with bleach or other household cleaning products. These are the household-liquid instructions; follow the label on any spray or other formulation instead of transferring the liquid’s dilution or contact time to it.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
CLR Brands says its household formula has “80% Plant Based Ingredients” and is EPA Safer Choice recognized. Those are manufacturer statements; the product information cited here does not provide a calculation or independent comparative performance result. They do not establish that CLR removes deposits better than competing products.

No usable official competitor directions or compatibility information was established for a cross-brand comparison. There is therefore no evidence-based ranking here that names an overall best remover across brands. For any candidate, compare the stain it targets, the exact material it permits, its application format, dilution and dwell time, rinse requirements, and warnings.
