The best budget capture card depends on the signal you need to capture—not the biggest resolution printed on the box. For a straightforward 1080p60 setup, compare the NZXT Signal HD60 and AVerMedia Live Gamer MINI GC311. If you want to play at 4K60 while sending a 1080p feed to your streaming computer, NZXT documents that combination for the Signal HD60. Check your console or camera’s output, computer ports, and required display modes before buying; current local prices and availability vary.
Which budget capture card should you consider?
These are practical starting points, not a claim that one model is the cheapest in every market. Prices and availability are not established here, and specifications should be checked against the current listing for your region.
| Model | Documented strengths | Important caveats |
|---|---|---|
| NZXT Signal HD60 | NZXT says it accepts and passes through up to 4K60, while streaming or recording tops out at 1080p. NZXT documents setup with OBS. | NZXT’s guide says it does not support HDR. Confirm present availability and required modes. It requires USB 3.2 Gen 1 or higher. NZXT setup and compatibility guide |
| AVerMedia Live Gamer MINI GC311 | Manufacturer specifications list 1080p60 pass-through and recording, UVC setup, and USB 2.0. | No 4K, HDR, or high-refresh support; HDCP-protected capture is not supported. AVerMedia GC311 specifications |
| Elgato HD60 X | Elgato lists OBS and other supported apps, Windows, Mac, and iPad support, and USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 at 5Gbps. | The opened EU product page marks it discontinued. Do not assume it is a current buy in your market; check availability and successor options. Elgato HD60 X product page |
| AVerMedia Live Gamer Extreme 3 GC551G2 | GamesRadar’s April 1, 2026 comparison presents it as a value option and reports 4K30 capture and 4K60 HDR passthrough. | Verify exact supported modes with the manufacturer and check current local price before choosing it. GamesRadar capture-card comparison |
For the GC311 and Signal HD60, the manufacturer specifications make the key trade-off relatively clear: the GC311 is a 1080p60-class option, while the Signal HD60 can pass through a higher-resolution play signal but still sends a maximum 1080p stream or recording. A higher passthrough resolution does not mean higher-resolution capture.
Do you need a capture card?
When you play and stream on one PC
Usually not. Capture software such as OBS can capture that computer’s screen directly. Elgato and NZXT describe direct software capture as the simpler route for a single-PC setup. Elgato’s capture-card explainer

When your source is a console, camera, phone, or second PC
A capture card can carry that device’s video and audio to a separate streaming computer. It is useful when you want to play on a console while a PC handles the stream, or when you need to bring a compatible camera or other HDMI source into streaming software. A phone or camera may need an HDMI output or a compatible adapter; check the device’s capabilities before assuming it can provide a clean capture signal.
Capture, passthrough, and the meaning of “4K”
Capture is the video sent to the computer for recording or streaming. Passthrough is the signal forwarded from the card to a display so you can play or monitor the source. A card may pass a signal at a higher resolution or frame rate than it captures.

Check compatibility before you buy
- Source output: confirm the console, camera, or other device can output HDMI at a mode the card accepts. For a camera or phone, verify whether the required HDMI output or adapter is available.
- Display mode: match the card’s passthrough support to your play display, including refresh rate and HDR or VRR if you rely on them. Do not infer those capabilities from a “4K” label alone.
- Computer connection: check the required host port and cable. NZXT says its Signal cards require USB 3.2 Gen 1 or higher; AVerMedia lists USB 2.0 for the GC311.
- Operating system and software: confirm support for your computer and streaming application. Elgato lists Windows, Mac, and iPad and supported apps on its HD60 X page, but that page marks the model discontinued in the EU.
- Content protection: HDCP can prevent capture. AVerMedia specifically says the GC311 does not support HDCP-protected capture.
- Audio and chat: determine whether game audio, microphone, and party chat reach the intended devices. Some console setups may need a separate chat cable; it is conditional, not a standard requirement for every buyer.
How to connect a capture card and add it in OBS
- Connect the source device’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input.
- If you want to play or monitor on a separate display, connect the card’s HDMI output to that display. This step is optional if your setup does not use passthrough.
- Connect the card to the streaming computer with its USB cable, using a port that meets the model’s requirements.
- Turn on the source and display. Set the source to a resolution and refresh rate supported by the card’s input and passthrough path.
- Open OBS and add a Video Capture Device source. Select the capture card, then check that the preview shows video and that the desired audio is reaching OBS.
- Before going live, make a short recording or private test stream. Check for a black image, missing audio, unexpected resolution, or a refresh-rate mismatch before relying on the setup.
NZXT’s guide documents this general console, camera, and mobile-device workflow and notes the need for an appropriate USB connection. Extra HDMI cables, device-specific adapters, a second display, or a chat cable are only needed when the particular setup calls for them. NZXT connection guide
Troubleshooting common capture-card problems
- OBS shows a black screen: confirm the HDMI cable runs from the source to the card’s input, the source is on, and the correct device is selected under Video Capture Device. Check whether HDCP protection is blocking capture.
- The play display works, but the stream is only 1080p: this can be expected when passthrough supports a higher mode than capture. The Signal HD60, for example, is documented for up to 4K60 passthrough and up to 1080p streaming or recording.
- The display loses signal or uses an unexpected mode: check that the source output, card input, card passthrough, and display all support the chosen resolution and refresh rate. Confirm HDR or VRR separately rather than assuming it works because the resolution does.
- There is no audio in OBS: check the source’s audio output, OBS capture-device audio settings, and the intended routing for game audio and chat. A console chat cable may be needed for some routing arrangements, but not all.
- The card is not detected: verify the USB cable and host port meet the card’s requirements, then check operating-system and software compatibility on the manufacturer’s product or support page.
What a capture card does not solve
A capture card moves a source’s signal into a computer; it does not by itself make a YouTube channel broadcast continuously. For a conventional live stream, you still need streaming software and a computer to encode and send the broadcast. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content policies also apply to what you stream: owning a capture card does not grant rights to game footage, music, or other material. Use content you have rights to use and review the platform’s current rules before broadcasting.
