There is no single proven cheapest Azure VM configuration for a 24/7 YouTube stream in India. The right budget choice depends on how you encode, your resolution and bitrate, the Azure region, and your account’s current rates. Start by comparing a general-purpose D-family VM against the actual encoder workload, then price outbound bandwidth, storage, IP, and other selected resources in Azure’s calculator before committing.
Start with the encoding workload, not a “cheap VM” label
A VM that can run an encoder is not necessarily economical for continuous streaming. The important distinction is whether the encoder places sustained load on the CPU or can use a compatible GPU encoder. Microsoft describes B-family instances as burstable for workloads with low-to-moderate baseline CPU use and occasional bursts; that is not a guarantee they will suit sustained video encoding. D family is positioned for general-purpose workloads, while N family is GPU accelerated. These family descriptions do not establish which size can encode your chosen YouTube format in real time. Azure’s Linux VM pricing page and its VM family pricing page are starting points, not workload benchmarks.
Practical shortlist
- D family: Compare a suitable general-purpose size for CPU encoding. Validate it with the exact resolution, codec, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to stream.
- B family: Consider only if a representative test shows that its burstable CPU behavior meets your sustained encoding demand. Its economical positioning alone is not enough to select it.
- N family: Consider only if your encoder supports the VM’s GPU acceleration and testing or a credible benchmark indicates the performance benefit justifies the higher cost. GPU acceleration is not a default budget requirement.
The available Azure material does not name a YouTube-specific benchmark or establish a cheapest all-in India configuration. Treat this as a shortlist to test, not a tested VM recommendation.
Estimate the complete monthly cost
For a stream that runs continuously, the VM’s hourly compute price is only one part of the bill. Outbound data transfer can be material, and Azure says standard egress charges apply. Azure’s estimates can vary with the agreement, purchase date, and currency conversion, so use the pricing calculator with your own inputs rather than treating a generic starting price as an India quote. Azure bandwidth pricing lists Central India, South India, and West India in Zone 2.

Inputs to compare
- Azure India region and exact VM size.
- Operating system and any applicable licensing.
- Monthly compute for the hours the VM will actually run; for a continuously operating stream, model a full month.
- Outbound data from your sustained stream bitrate and monthly streaming hours, mapped to the applicable current India-region egress tier.
- Managed disk, public IP, and any other billable services the deployment requires.
- Regional availability and latency from where you operate the VM.
- Your subscription’s agreement and pricing currency.
Estimate outbound stream data
Use the stream’s actual sustained bitrate and intended operating time. A useful planning conversion is:
Outbound GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × streaming hours × 0.45

This is an approximate decimal-GB estimate before protocol overhead and any other traffic. For example, at 4 Mbps for 24 hours each day across a 30-day planning month: 4 × 720 × 0.45 ≈ 1,296 GB. Use your own bitrate and hours, then check how Azure applies its current egress tiers and units in the calculator; do not assume the example predicts your bill.

- Open the Azure pricing calculator and select the intended India region, exact VM size, and operating system.
- Set the usage hours to match the planned schedule. For uninterrupted month-long operation, calculate for a full month rather than a short test period.
- Add the expected outbound data transfer and confirm the applicable region and bandwidth tier.
- Add the managed disk, public IP, and other resources needed by your design. Azure’s Linux VM pricing page recommends managed disks for optimal performance.
- Review the estimate against your subscription’s actual terms and currency. Recheck it before deployment because Azure estimates may change with agreement, purchase date, and exchange rates.
The calculator produces an estimate, not a guaranteed quote. A precise total cannot be stated without the selected VM, region, OS, storage and IP choices, bitrate, operating hours, and account-specific pricing.

Test the candidate before relying on it
Before leaving a VM to stream continuously, test the actual encoding and delivery setup with your intended format. Watch whether the encoder sustains the target resolution and frame rate without falling behind, and check CPU or GPU load, memory use, dropped frames, and network output. A successful short test does not by itself establish month-long reliability or guarantee that YouTube will remain connected.
- Use the same encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate planned for production.
- Check that the chosen VM size and region are available to your subscription.
- Confirm that the encoder can use the VM GPU if GPU acceleration is part of the cost justification.
- Review the full streaming path separately: selecting a VM size cannot guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube stream.
