The best boom arm for your live-streaming setup depends on your desk layout, monitor clearance, microphone weight and mounting needs—not on a universal ranking. Consider the Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP when clearance is tight, the Elgato Wave Mic Arm when you need extra reach and adjustability, and the RØDE PSA1+ if you want a studio-style arm with two desk-mounting options. Manufacturer specifications support these distinctions, but there is no like-for-like independent test here to establish one overall winner.
Which boom arm fits your streaming setup?
Start with the geometry of your desk and screens, then check the fully assembled microphone load, thread and desk mount. An arm that clears the monitor but cannot support the microphone and its accessories—or cannot attach securely to the desk—is the wrong fit.

How to check fit before you buy
- Measure the available space. Measure the gap between desk and monitor, but also map the arm’s full path as it swings toward you. Check whether the microphone will block a screen, camera view or your face.
- Calculate the complete mounted load. Add the microphone, shock mount, adapter and any other hardware attached to the arm. Compare that total with the arm’s stated supported load; do not use the microphone’s weight alone.
- Identify the mounting thread. Check the exact microphone or mount specification, then verify the arm includes the required adapter. Elgato lists examples for the Wave Mic Arm LP including Wave DX, Shure SM7B, Blue Yeti, HyperX QuadCast and RØDE PodMic. Treat those examples as a starting point: confirm the precise model and mounting combination.
- Check the desk attachment. Measure desk thickness and inspect its edge shape and available clamp space. For an arm with a threaded desk mount, decide whether your desk can accept that installation and whether you want to drill or use an existing insert.
- Choose the arm path and cable plan. Decide whether a low horizontal arm or a raised articulated arm better clears your screens and camera. Check where cables will run and whether the arm can be repositioned without pulling them or entering your view.
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Elgato describes its standard Wave Mic Arm as offering extra reach, full adjustability and integrated cable channels, in contrast to the LP’s low-profile design. RØDE’s product information establishes the PSA1+’s two supplied desk-mounting options. These claims help narrow a shortlist, but do not settle which arm moves most smoothly, stays quiet during repositioning, resists long-term sag or offers the best value. No like-for-like independent performance test is established here.

Compatibility can depend on the exact microphone-and-arm combination. Elgato’s Wave:3 mounting guidance says the Rode PSA1 may need additional weight to hold the desired height in that specific setup. That is a reason to verify a particular pairing, not evidence about the PSA1+ or every microphone.
Common fit problems to prevent
- The arm collides with a monitor: compare the desk-to-monitor gap with the full sweep of the arm, not just its highest listed point.
- The arm will not hold its position: recheck the total mounted load and the arm’s stated capacity for your exact model. Do not assume another microphone’s compatibility experience applies to your setup.
- The microphone will not thread on: check the microphone or shock-mount thread and the adapters included with the arm. Confirm the precise model rather than relying on a broad product-family name.
- The clamp does not suit the desk: verify thickness, edge shape and usable clearance before purchase; consider whether a threaded mount is acceptable if the product supplies that option.
- Cables catch or the mic enters the camera view: test the intended arm path and cable route before settling on a mounting position.
