The right boat GPS depends on whether you need electronic marine charts, fishing sonar, or both. For most navigation decisions, compare chartplotters by chart coverage, display and helm fit, sonar configuration, and compatibility with the electronics already on your boat—not by a blanket “best” ranking.

Chartplotter or fishfinder with GPS: which do you need?

A marine chartplotter combines vessel-position and navigation functions with electronic marine charts. It is the more direct choice when you want to view your position against charted waters and plan or follow routes.

A GPS fishfinder may instead focus on sonar and saving waypoint locations such as fishing spots. That can suit fishing use, but a built-in GPS does not by itself establish that a device provides full chartplotter charting. Check the exact model and configuration before treating the two categories as interchangeable.

What to check before choosing a boat GPS

Chart coverage and updates

Choose chart coverage for the waters you actually navigate: coastal and inland needs can differ. Chart availability and update arrangements depend on the model and configuration, so verify the included chart region and terms for the exact unit rather than assuming a family name identifies its bundle.

Display size and helm fit

Measure the available mounting space and consider how far away you will read the screen. Garmin’s chartplotter families range from compact displays to large units and multi-display systems. A larger screen may be useful for viewing chart detail, but the appropriate size depends on the helm and your installation.

Sonar, transducers, and fishing use

Sonar is a separate selection axis from charting. Some chartplotter models include or support sonar, while the required transducer or other equipment may be sold separately. Confirm what the exact package includes and whether the sonar features match your intended fishing use.

Compatibility with installed electronics

Check the interfaces needed to connect the new unit to existing equipment. Garmin describes NMEA and Garmin Marine Network integration for GPSMAP x3; Lowrance lists NMEA 2000 and Ethernet for the HDS-9 Gen3. Those examples apply to the named product lines and do not establish compatibility for every boat or configuration.

Family Fit and display choices described by the manufacturer What to verify
Garmin ECHOMAP UHD2 Chartplotter family in 5-, 6-, 7-, and 9-inch sizes; Garmin lists coastal or inland mapping options and sunlight-readable touchscreens on several models or variants. Exact chart region, screen size, sonar capability, and transducer bundle. Do not assume one configuration fits every boat or region.
Garmin GPSMAP x3 Chartplotters in 7-, 9-, 12-, 15-inch ultrawide, and 16-inch displays; configurations with or without sonar. The guide describes Garmin Navionics+ charts, sailing features, and integration with NMEA or Garmin Marine Network. Whether the specific model includes sonar, the chart configuration, and compatibility with installed equipment and accessories.
Garmin ECHOMAP Ultra 2 Fishing-oriented family in 10-, 12-, and 16-inch display sizes, with mapping and sonar features varying by configuration. Included mapping and sonar equipment for the exact unit.
Garmin GPSMAP 9000 Larger-display, feature-rich family. Garmin’s April 22, 2026 guide says 13- to 27-inch displays offer 4K resolution and the 10-inch display offers Full HD; it also describes BlueNet networking, charting, processing, and connectivity. Display size, resolution, network needs, chart configuration, and installation fit. Garmin’s feature descriptions are manufacturer claims, not an independent comparative assessment.
Garmin STRIKER Vivid GPS fishfinder family described with sonar and built-in GPS for marking fishing hotspots. Whether waypoint marking and sonar meet your needs; the cited family description does not establish full chartplotter charting.
Lowrance HDS-9 Gen3 Legacy-generation 9-inch fishfinder/chartplotter specification example. Lowrance lists built-in GPS/GLONASS, multiple chart formats, sonar, AIS display capabilities, NMEA 2000, and Ethernet. Its generation, current availability, exact configuration, and fit with your installed systems. The cited specifications do not make it a current-generation recommendation.

For a compact boat where space is limited, a smaller display family such as ECHOMAP UHD2 may be a practical starting point, provided its chart and equipment configuration suit your waters and use. If you need a larger display, multiple screens, or broader network integration, compare the relevant GPSMAP models against the space and electronics on board. For fishing, distinguish a chartplotter with sonar support from a GPS fishfinder focused on sonar and waypoint marking.

How to narrow the choice

  1. Decide the main job. Choose chart-based navigation, fishing sonar and waypoint marking, or a combination. If chart navigation is essential, confirm that the exact unit is a chartplotter with appropriate charts.
  2. Measure the installation. Check the helm’s mounting area and select a display size you can read from your operating position.
  3. Match charts to your waters. Confirm the chart region included or available for the model, plus the applicable update arrangement.
  4. Confirm the sonar package. Determine whether sonar is included or supported and whether the required transducer or other equipment is part of the bundle.
  5. Check connections. Compare the unit’s listed interfaces with the boat’s existing network and electronics, including any required manufacturer-specific accessories.
  6. Compare exact configurations. Use the model and bundle details—not just the family name—when checking features or availability. Current prices and bundle terms are not established by the sources cited here.

Do not treat an automated route as a safety guarantee

Garmin’s GPSMAP Owner’s Manual, version 16, dated September 2026, says: “All route and navigation lines displayed on the chartplotter are only intended to provide general route guidance or to identify proper channels, and are not intended to be precisely followed.” The manual also warns that electronic chart data does not ensure obstacle or bottom clearance. Compare a displayed course with visual sightings and avoid land, shallow water, and other obstacles. A chartplotter can support navigation, but the operator remains responsible for safe passage.

What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you

Lowrance lists 20 m RMS position accuracy and a 10 Hz GPS update rate for the HDS-9 Gen3; the page does not state a publication date. These are manufacturer specifications for a legacy-generation model, not independent field-test results or evidence that it performs better than another unit. They should not be generalized to other Lowrance models.
