For the most clearly documented wireless gamepad for a PlayStation 4, choose Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4. PlayStation’s setup instructions pair it to the console by USB first; after pairing and charging, you can disconnect the cable and play wirelessly. Sony’s product information also documents the features that matter when deciding whether this controller suits your games.
Which Bluetooth gamepad should you choose for PS4?
Choose a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller if you want the most straightforward, officially documented wireless option for PS4. Sony describes it as a wireless controller for the console, and PlayStation support explains how to connect it. That documentation is not an independent comparison, however: it does not establish that DUALSHOCK 4 outperforms every third-party controller in latency, battery life, durability, or comfort.
PlayStation also lists officially licensed alternatives, including Hori and Nacon models. The examples on its page include wired controllers, such as the HORI Mini and Nacon Compact. A licensed PS4 controller is not necessarily Bluetooth or wireless, so check the connection type for the exact model before buying. What to look for in a PS4 wireless controller
Compare the features that affect your games and how you play, rather than relying on the word “Bluetooth” alone. Sony documents the following DUALSHOCK 4 features on its product page; these are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independently tested advantages.

- Motion sensing and light bar: The controller includes an accelerometer, a gyroscope, and an integrated light bar. These features may matter in games that use motion input or controller light.
- Audio: A built-in speaker and 3.5 mm stereo headset jack are included.
- Charging: The controller’s battery charges over USB.
- Fit and grip: Choose based on hand size, preferred grip, and comfort. The cited specifications do not provide a standardized comparison of size or ergonomics across models.
Review Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 feature list and confirm the exact model and connection type before purchasing any alternative.
How to pair a DUALSHOCK 4 with a PS4
- Turn on the PS4 and connect the controller to the console with a USB cable. PlayStation’s instructions refer to the included cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button to pair it with the console.
- Allow the controller to charge if needed. Once it has enough charge, disconnect the USB cable to use the controller wirelessly.
PlayStation says a controller pairs with one console at a time and that a PS4 can connect up to four controllers at once. If the controller does not pair, use PlayStation’s DUALSHOCK 4 support and troubleshooting instructions.

Does DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth work the same on other devices?
No. Bluetooth compatibility depends on the device, operating-system version, and game or application. Sony’s guide covers supported Android, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS versions; support is not universal across every device or app.

For a compatible non-console device, Sony’s Bluetooth pairing procedure is to switch off the controller, disconnect USB, then hold SHARE and PS until the light bar flashes. Select the controller from the device’s Bluetooth list. On non-console devices, Sony notes that—except on compatible Sony Xperia devices—touchpad support, light-bar color control, rumble, motion sensing, and headphone-jack audio are unavailable over Bluetooth. Those limitations apply to the described use away from the console, not to ordinary PS4 play.
