For a bedroom that gets dawn sun, the best blackout curtains are the panels that block light in your chosen color and fit the window with as few edge gaps as possible. A “blackout” label alone is no guarantee of a dark room: light can pass through fabric or enter around the top, sides, center seam, and bottom. Compare the exact panel variant, then size and hang it to cover more than just the glass.
What makes a blackout curtain effective?
There are two separate issues: how much light passes through the curtain itself, and how much sunlight bypasses it around the edges. A densely constructed or lined panel may address the first; generous coverage and careful installation address the second. Neither guarantees complete darkness in every room.
Consumer Reports’ guide, updated January 1, 2026, says it tested 18 curtain products from nine popular brands. Its described light-leak test held each curtain against a bright 5,000-lumen flashlight and observed light escaping onto a white wall. It also assessed thermal insulation with a temperature-controlled metal box. Consumer Reports reports substantial variation: many products did not deliver blackout conditions, and only two of the nine tested lines effectively blocked light across their color offerings. That finding does not establish that every color or model from any one brand performs the same way. Read Consumer Reports’ guide and testing details.

Look for evidence about the specific color and construction you plan to buy rather than assuming a brand-wide result. The guide names Amazon Basics, BGment, Gracie Oaks, Ikea, Lemomo, Mainstays, Nicetown, Pottery Barn, and Threshold among the lines considered, but the available information does not establish a universal winner or provide a complete score-by-score comparison.

How to choose curtains for an early-sun bedroom
Check the exact panel and color
Prioritize credible light-blocking evidence for the exact variant, not just the product name. Check whether the panel is lined or uses a dense weave, and whether the listing’s claims are independently measured or are manufacturer claims. NBC Select’s June 25, 2025 guide, for example, attributes “up to 99%” light-blocking claims to a brand; treat that as an attributed claim, not an independent test result. Specifications and listings can change. See NBC Select’s guide and product details.
Measure for the planned rod position
Measure the window, then plan the rod or rail to extend beyond the glass on both sides. Consumer Reports advises extending the rod or rail and curtains well beyond the window edges. NBC Select’s interviewed experts suggest allowing at least 8 to 10 inches beyond each side when the room permits. For floor-length panels, they suggest a hem about an inch above the floor. These are practical fitting recommendations, not a guarantee of a completely dark room.

Check both the panel width and length against the extended rod position, not just the window dimensions. If two panels meet in the middle, leave enough width for them to overlap or close without a daylight slit. Consider the top gap too: a standard rod mounted well above the frame can leave room for sunlight to spill over the curtain.
Account for weight, daily use, and care
Blackout-lined panels may weigh more than ordinary curtains, so make sure the rod, brackets, and wall mounting can safely support the chosen curtains. NBC Select’s experts note that ring or traverse systems can make daily opening easier than some rod-pocket or grommet arrangements. Check the exact listing for hanging style and cleaning instructions before purchase.

Replace the panels or add a blackout liner?
If you like your existing curtains, a separate blackout liner can be an alternative to replacing the decorative panels. NBC Select’s guide lists the Rose Home Fashion Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtain Liner Panel and presents liners as a potentially effective, often more economical option based on advice from an interior designer it quotes. That is expert guidance reported by a shopping guide, not independent lab proof. Check that the liner fits your existing panels and attachment method, and account for the added weight.
If buying new, NBC Select lists Amazon Basics Room Darkening Blackout Window Curtains as polyester, triple-weave panels with machine-washable care and grommet or rod-pocket options in listed widths and lengths. Verify the current listing, color, dimensions, hanging style, and care instructions for the exact variant. Consumer Reports also included Amazon Basics among its tested lines, but its reported variation across brands and colors is a reason not to treat the name alone as a guarantee.

Will blackout curtains help with heat or sleep?
Thicker lined curtains may moderate drafts or direct sunlight in a room, but the evidence here does not establish a specific energy-saving amount for curtains. Do not confuse curtain descriptions such as “thermal” with formal window ratings. ENERGY STAR explains that NFRC ratings for qualified windows, doors, and skylights include U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), and Visible Transmittance (VT); a lower SHGC means less solar energy passes through a rated window. Those are window-product ratings, not curtain-performance scores. Learn about ENERGY STAR’s window ratings.

Consumer Reports also cites a 2022 nationally representative survey of 2,084 U.S. adults: among respondents who bought blackout curtains or shades in the prior year, 88 percent said they were somewhat or very effective in helping improve sleep. That is a self-reported perception, not a clinical trial or proof that curtains treat insomnia. Phyllis Zee, professor of neurology and sleep medicine and director of the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, says: “even ‘dim to moderate levels of light can negatively affect your health and sleep quality.” Curtains can reduce light exposure, but they do not by themselves resolve a sleep disorder.
