For a typical 1080p30 H.264 YouTube live stream, set the video bitrate to 14 Mbps, YouTube’s current recommendation. To retain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom, the encoder location should have roughly 17.5 Mbps of stable measured upload capacity available for that stream. For 1080p60 H.264, use 17 Mbps and allow about 21.25 Mbps of measured upload capacity. These capacity figures are calculations applying YouTube’s headroom guidance—not Airtel guarantees. YouTube’s live encoder settings and network guidance are the right starting points; an advertised Airtel plan speed alone cannot establish 24/7 stability.

Recommended bitrate by resolution and frame rate

Bitrate depends on the ingest codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s current published H.264 live-encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them.

Ingest resolution and frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended Approximate measured upload with 20% headroom
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 17.5 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 21.25 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 5 Mbps
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 5 Mbps

The upload estimates are arithmetic applications of YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom to the recommended video bitrate: bitrate ÷ 0.8. They cover one stream’s video bitrate only. Leave additional capacity for audio, any backup stream, other upload traffic and variation in the connection. YouTube’s recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply this H.264 table to another ingest codec.

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframe interval: two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Ingest protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  • Stream key: use the key configured for the YouTube live stream in the encoder. Treat it as a secret; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured feed to YouTube’s ingest service.

Check Airtel upload capacity at the encoder

Airtel India’s current broadband plans page advertises tiers of up to 40 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 300 Mbps and 1024 Mbps, with availability varying by location. These are plan descriptions, not evidence of sustained upload throughput at an individual home. Check your address-specific plan details and test upload performance where the encoder will run; download speed is not a substitute.

  1. Measure outbound upload from the actual setup. Test at the encoder’s location and connection, at representative times. A single speed test is only a snapshot.
  2. Account for competing traffic. YouTube notes that other people sharing the network can reduce the bandwidth available to the streamer. Test under realistic household or office load, and include the audio and any backup stream in your capacity plan.
  3. Rehearse privately or unlisted. Run the encoder with the intended settings and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Look for a consistent feed rather than relying on one favorable speed result.
  4. Lower the target if results vary. Reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate until the connection has dependable margin. For example, a connection that cannot reliably sustain the 1080p30 target may be better suited to a lower recommended setting than to a 14 Mbps stream at the edge of its capacity.

YouTube advises testing outbound bandwidth and using a reliable connection; disruptions can break a live stream. For a 24/7 target, sustained behavior and stream-health monitoring matter more than an advertised tier or isolated speed test.

Consider Airtel’s fair-usage terms for continuous streaming

Airtel’s public plan page describes its broadband plans as unlimited, but Airtel’s Xstream Fiber terms state that after consumption of 3333 GB in a billing cycle, speed is reduced to 1 Mbps. The terms also say Airtel may amend the Fair Usage Policy. Check the current terms attached to your own plan before relying on the figures; public plan wording and terms can change.

At a constant 14 Mbps, one stream uploads about 151.2 GB per day, or roughly 4.54 TB over 30 days, before protocol overhead and other household usage. This is a calculation from the bitrate, not an Airtel or YouTube statistic. If the stated 3333 GB threshold applies to your account and the stream remains at 14 Mbps, the stream alone would exceed it during a billing cycle. A lower bitrate changes the transfer total, but does not eliminate the need to confirm your current plan terms.

Troubleshoot an unstable or interrupted stream

  • YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth or the feed drops: compare the configured bitrate with measured upload available at the encoder, including other traffic and any backup stream. Reduce the video bitrate or output resolution if there is not consistent headroom.
  • Speed tests look good but the stream is unstable: a test measures a moment, not an entire day. Repeat tests under representative network load and use YouTube’s stream-health display during a private or unlisted rehearsal.
  • The feed struggles when others use the connection: YouTube warns that shared network use can limit available bandwidth. Re-test with typical users and devices active, or choose settings that leave more capacity unused.
  • The stream stops after extended use: check current Airtel plan-specific FUP terms and total billing-cycle consumption. The published terms cited above describe a speed reduction after a usage threshold; confirm whether those terms still apply to your account.
  • The encoder connects but the stream does not behave as expected: verify the stream key, codec-specific bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval and ingest protocol against the YouTube settings above, then check YouTube stream health.
