For a low-friction starting champion in each League of Legends position, try Garen for top, Warwick for jungle, Annie for mid, Ashe for bot carry (ADC), and Leona for support. These are practical options, not an official Riot ranking or a claim about current patch strength. Choose the one whose play style interests you, then use it to learn what the position asks you to do.
How to choose a beginner champion
A useful first champion makes the role’s main decisions easier to recognize: what to focus on, how to contribute, and when to avoid a risky play. The 2026 beginner guide from Games.gg says its choices consider mechanical difficulty, how forgiving a kit feels, how clearly its abilities communicate their purpose, and how much it helps teach the role. These are practical criteria, not an official Riot scoring system or a measured difficulty rating.
Interest matters too. Riot Games Player Support advises new players to consider which champion’s style appeals to them, and cautions against buying one solely for its abilities or current balance situation. Riot’s examples for understanding the basics are Ashe, Ryze, and Garen; that guidance is not a role-by-role list. See Choosing the Right Champion.

Beginner champion picks by role
League has five standard positions: top, jungle, mid, bot carry (often called ADC), and support. Riot’s How to Play overview describes their broad identities; the picks below draw on Dodge.gg’s 2026 role-by-role beginner guide. Treat them as a starting pool rather than a definitive ranking.

Top: Garen
Garen is a direct solo-lane starting point. Focus on farming, choosing when to trade, and recognizing when to disengage instead of extending a fight. Malphite is another option if you want to try a different style.
Jungle: Warwick
Warwick is a beginner-oriented jungle pick in the 2026 guide. The jungler moves between lanes and works with the team around neutral monsters and objectives, so pay attention to the map as well as nearby fights. Riot explains the jungle and neutral monsters in its position overview. Amumu is an alternative to explore.

Mid: Annie
Annie is a straightforward mid-lane starting choice. Riot characterizes mid laners broadly as high-burst champions, so use the role to learn how to manage a solo lane while looking for chances to deal damage. Lux is another beginner-guide option.

Ashe is a beginner pick for the bot carry position. The role relies on ranged damage, but that does not remove the need to position carefully: stay aware of threats and avoid stepping into danger just to keep attacking. Miss Fortune is an alternative.

Support: Leona
Leona offers a clear engage-and-stun example, making it easier to see when a support can start a fight. Support also has lane and team responsibilities beyond attacking, so watch what your allies need and coordinate before committing. Soraka is another option if you want to try a different support style.

If you want flexibility across matchmaking positions, learn at least one champion for each. Riot’s Matchmaking and Autofill guidance recommends familiarity with a champion in every position. You do not need to master all five at once: begin with the position you enjoy most, then add picks for the others.

- Choose a champion whose style you want to play, rather than selecting only for perceived strength.
- Use a small number of games to learn the position’s basic tasks before switching champions repeatedly.
- Keep the role in view: top involves solo-lane decisions, jungle involves moving between lanes and objectives, mid emphasizes burst, bot carry demands ranged damage and positioning, and support contributes through lane and team play.
Champion recommendations vary between guides, and no reproducible measurement of which champion is “easiest” is established by the cited lists. Beginner-friendly also does not mean strongest on the live patch; these picks are not supported here by current win-rate or pick-rate comparisons.
