Use AWS Elemental MediaLive to ingest and loop the prerecorded file, then send a separate RTMP output to YouTube Live. MediaPackage does not loop the file: add it only if you also need a packaged HLS playback endpoint for other viewers or clients. The basic path is MP4 in Amazon S3 → MediaLive file input (Source end behavior: LOOP) → MediaLive RTMP output → YouTube Live.
Recommended architecture
Store the MP4 in Amazon S3, configure it as a MediaLive file input, attach that input to a MediaLive channel, and set its Source end behavior to LOOP. Add an RTMP output group for YouTube Live and configure its destination using the current ingest details shown in YouTube Studio. AWS documents MediaLive’s RTMP output capability, but the AWS material covered here does not provide a YouTube-specific end-to-end recipe; confirm the current ingest URL, stream key, and encoder requirements in Studio rather than relying on hard-coded values from an unverified guide. AWS Elemental MediaLive supported output containers.
The resulting design is:
- YouTube delivery: S3 MP4 → MediaLive file input with LOOP → MediaLive channel → RTMP output to YouTube Live.
- Optional playback distribution: MediaLive HLS output → MediaPackage endpoint → playback clients or, where appropriate, CloudFront distribution.
What each AWS service does
| Service | Role in this design |
|---|---|
| Amazon S3 | Stores the MP4 source file used by the MediaLive file input. AWS’s dynamic-input documentation also lists S3 as an eligible location for MP4 or TS inputs. MediaLive dynamic inputs. |
| AWS Elemental MediaLive | Ingests the source, encodes it, and sends configured outputs. It handles file-input looping and scheduled input switches; channels can use output groups such as RTMP and HLS. MediaLive outputs. |
| AWS Elemental MediaPackage | Receives live HLS from an upstream encoder and packages it for downstream playback requests. It is not the component that loops the S3 file or supplies the YouTube RTMP destination. What is AWS Elemental MediaPackage? |
| Amazon CloudFront | Can distribute packaged playback to viewers after MediaPackage. It belongs to that viewer-delivery path, not the YouTube ingest path. Live streaming on AWS architecture overview. |
Set up a single-file loop
- Put the source in S3. Use an MP4 file that MediaLive can access as a file input. Confirm the object location and permissions for your account and channel configuration.
- Create a MediaLive file input. Select the S3 file as the input source, then attach that input to the MediaLive channel. AWS documents S3 as a supported location for MP4 or TS dynamic inputs. MediaLive dynamic inputs.
- Set the input’s Source end behavior to LOOP. When the file finishes, MediaLive starts ingesting it again and continues looping until a scheduled next input begins. Setting input end behavior.
- Configure the channel’s output groups. Add an RTMP output for YouTube. If you need a separate packaged playback endpoint, configure an HLS output as well and direct it to MediaPackage. MediaLive channels can have multiple output groups; verify the exact output settings against the selected channel configuration and current platform requirements. MediaLive outputs.
- Enter YouTube’s current ingest details. In YouTube Studio, retrieve the stream key and ingest destination for the intended live stream and enter the applicable details in the MediaLive RTMP destination settings. Keep the key private and confirm the current YouTube encoder requirements in Studio before starting.
- Start the channel and confirm the live event. Check MediaLive channel/output status and YouTube Studio’s live preview or status before relying on the broadcast. Allow for the normal processing and connection checks shown by those services.
When to add MediaPackage
Add MediaPackage when viewers or applications need a packaged HLS endpoint in addition to the YouTube broadcast. MediaLive can send the HLS output to MediaPackage, which packages it for downstream playback requests. If you do not need that separate playback endpoint, the documented YouTube path can be MediaLive’s RTMP output directly to YouTube; MediaPackage is not a required loop or relay stage for that path.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Looping one file versus scheduling a playlist
Repeat one file
Use LOOP when the requirement is to repeat the same file continuously. The loop continues until a scheduled next input starts. MediaLive input end behavior.
Play a sequence of files
For a sequence, use MediaLive’s scheduled input switches rather than expecting one input to become a playlist automatically. AWS documents VOD-to-live workflows in which file inputs run one after another, and dynamic inputs can select different S3 or MediaStore MP4/TS files through schedule variables. Plan and validate the schedule, source locations, and transitions for the channel you configure. MediaLive schedule.

Choose the end behavior deliberately
CONTINUE plays the file once and then uses input-loss behavior until the next input starts; it does not repeat the file. LOOP repeats the file while waiting for the next fixed or immediate scheduled input. Choose based on what should happen between scheduled sources. MediaLive input end behavior.

AWS’s reference live-streaming design uses redundant feeds and processing alongside MediaPackage and CloudFront, but that reference does not establish automatic end-to-end redundancy for a single S3 file loop sent to YouTube. Before treating this as a resilient broadcast design, validate the channel class and input constraints for your configuration, then test what happens when the input, channel, or destination connection fails. Do not infer YouTube recovery behavior from the reference architecture. AWS live-streaming architecture overview.

- Confirm the S3 source remains accessible to the configured input.
- Check that the channel is configured with the intended RTMP destination and, if needed, a separate HLS output to MediaPackage.
- Verify the current YouTube stream key and ingest details in Studio; treat the key as a secret.
- Test a scheduled switch if the loop must yield to another file, including the behavior at the transition.
- Monitor the MediaLive channel and output as well as YouTube’s live status; a running encoder and a healthy YouTube broadcast are related but distinct checks.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely point to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The file plays once and stops repeating. | The file input’s end behavior may be CONTINUE rather than LOOP. | Set Source end behavior to LOOP, then verify the channel’s input attachment and schedule. |
| The stream reaches YouTube but the optional playback endpoint does not work. | The HLS-to-MediaPackage path is separate from the RTMP-to-YouTube path. | Check the MediaLive HLS output and MediaPackage endpoint configuration independently. |
| YouTube does not show the expected live feed. | The RTMP destination, stream key, or current YouTube ingest requirements may be wrong or stale. | Retrieve current details in YouTube Studio and compare them with the MediaLive RTMP destination settings. |
| A scheduled file does not take over from the loop. | The switch schedule, selected input, or timing may not match the intended transition. | Review the MediaLive schedule and confirm the next input is configured and accessible. |
| The design is assumed to be redundant but a failure interrupts delivery. | A multi-service reference architecture does not guarantee redundancy for this particular single-file-to-YouTube setup. | Validate the chosen channel class, input constraints, and actual failure/recovery behavior with a test deployment. |
Cost and architecture trade-offs
AWS pricing depends on the configured services and workload; the AWS material cited here does not establish a workload-specific estimate. Compare the cost and operational overhead of keeping MediaLive running with the need for an additional MediaPackage endpoint, required output formats and bitrate ladder, and desired resiliency. Do not add MediaPackage or CloudFront solely because they appear in a reference playback architecture if your only destination is YouTube.
