For a typical stereo rain-and-birdsong stream sent to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps, stereo. These are YouTube’s published stereo recommendations, not settings proven by a genre-specific listening test. YouTube accepts MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS too, but its guidance does not say AAC sounds better for nature ambience.
Recommended audio settings for rain and birdsong
Set the encoder to AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps in stereo. This matches YouTube’s published settings for stereo live audio and is a practical compatibility choice for a conventional ambience stream. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the priority is a compatible, stable feed rather than encoding a separate audio format for each device. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe this transcoding process and list the recommended audio parameters.
The recommendation is about ingest settings. YouTube’s guidance does not compare AAC and MP3 subjectively, nor does it establish that one codec improves rain or birdsong specifically.
AAC or MP3 for YouTube Live ambience?
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists both AAC and MP3 as supported. AAC is the straightforward choice because it is supported and matches YouTube’s recommended stereo settings. If your existing encoder workflow uses MP3, the platform guidance lists it as accepted; there is no cited genre-specific evidence here that MP3 will sound worse.

Settings for surround sound
If the stream is intentionally produced in 5.1 surround rather than ordinary stereo, YouTube recommends AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance says 5.1 is supported only with AAC. Use these surround settings only when the source and entire encoding workflow are genuinely 5.1; they are not an upgrade to apply to a stereo recording.

YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance lists its supported audio formats and stereo settings. For a non-interactive ambience broadcast, choose the protocol your encoder supports reliably; the published guidance does not identify a special protocol or codec for 24/7 rain and birdsong.

Keep the audio stream stable
The right codec cannot compensate for a failing connection or an encoder that stops sending data. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and reviewing any messages in the live control room. Its network advice recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate. Treat that as connection capacity margin, not an audio-bitrate setting.
