If you mean alternatives to Apple’s streaming service or Apple TV app, the strongest options depend on how you want to watch: Criterion Channel for curated film streaming, Watch TCM for its channel and on-demand selection if your TV provider carries TCM, Kanopy through a participating library or institution, or Blu-ray/DVD for a particular film you want to keep. None is a guaranteed, permanent catalog of classic movies; streaming rights and selections change.
Which classic-movie option fits you?
| Option | Best fit | Access requirement | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Criterion Channel | Curated classic, international, art-house, and contemporary films | Subscription and a supported app or device | Whether the film is currently streaming and whether your device is supported |
| Watch TCM | TCM live broadcasts and on-demand movies | TV-provider credentials for a package that includes TCM | Provider, package, geography, and current on-demand rights |
| Kanopy | Film streaming through a participating library or institution | Eligibility and access rules set by the library or institution | Local participation and supported devices |
| Blu-ray/DVD | A specific film or edition you want to own or revisit | An available disc edition and compatible player | Exact edition, region coding, availability, and release status |
These are different access routes, not interchangeable services: Criterion Channel is curated subscription streaming, Watch TCM relies on a TV provider, Kanopy relies on institutional access, and discs provide title-specific physical access.
Criterion Channel: curated films and supplements
The Criterion Channel is a dedicated streaming service covering classic and contemporary films. The Criterion Collection describes it as “an independent streaming service that features an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary films from Hollywood and around the world, many not available anywhere else.” See the Criterion Channel support FAQ for service and device information.
Its official support information lists Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, and Apple TV among supported platforms. That makes it an option for compatible televisions and streaming devices, including some setups that already use Apple hardware. Confirm the app works on your specific device, and check the film’s listing before subscribing: rights and availability can change.

- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance

Watch TCM: live broadcasts and on-demand viewing
Watch TCM offers TCM live broadcasts and on-demand movies, but it is a TV Everywhere service rather than a standalone subscription. You need to sign in with credentials from a TV provider whose package includes TCM. TCM says the channel is available through cable, satellite, and many live-TV streaming providers; the exact lineup and package depend on provider and geography.
Check TCM’s Watch TCM access information and supported-device information, then verify that your provider includes TCM and that the film you want is currently available on demand.

Kanopy: check your library or institution first
Kanopy can provide film streaming if your local library or educational institution participates. Access is not universal, and institutions set their own eligibility and access rules. Look up your library or institution’s Kanopy access before planning around the service, then confirm that its supported devices suit your setup. Kanopy’s service site is a starting point for checking access.
Blu-ray and DVD: a title-specific alternative
If you want to revisit a particular film or keep a copy, physical media avoids relying on a streaming catalog’s current rights. Some Criterion Channel titles also have complete Blu-ray or DVD editions, but that does not mean every streamed film is available on disc. Check the exact title and edition, whether it is available, the disc’s region coding, and whether your player supports it.

Choose by how you watch
- Want curated streaming? Start with Criterion Channel, then check whether the specific film is in its current catalog.
- Already pay for TV service? Check whether your provider package includes TCM before using Watch TCM.
- Have library or university access? See whether that institution participates in Kanopy and what access rules apply.
- Want to keep one particular film? Look for the exact Blu-ray or DVD edition and confirm player and region compatibility.
- Need an app on your television? Check each service’s current device support for your exact model. A Roku streaming device is one possible route for compatible apps, but support for Criterion Channel does not establish compatibility with every service or every Roku model.
This comparison is US-oriented. Availability, provider packages, institutional access, device support, and film catalogs can vary by country and change over time; verify current details with the service, provider, library, or retailer before relying on them.
