If you want to change what a particular Android keyboard key does—not just its color or theme—Custom Keyboard Designer is the clearest documented match. It describes assigning functions to individual keys and, with an optional package, giving a key multiple functions. FlorisBoard is a strong open-source option for configurable gestures and a specific delete-key long-press choice. AnySoftKeyboard offers other useful settings, but its reviewed feature list does not establish arbitrary per-key function assignment.
What counts as changing an individual key?
Keyboard customization can refer to several different things. A theme changes appearance; a gesture setting changes what a swipe or long press does; individual-key assignment changes the function attached to a chosen key. Those capabilities are not interchangeable. If your goal is to make a particular key insert a symbol, run a function, or behave differently, look for explicit key-assignment support rather than relying on a general claim that a keyboard is customizable.
One common request is to change what happens when you long-press a key or put a preferred symbol first. That is a narrower behavior change than reassigning any key to any function, so check that the keyboard documents the precise control you need.

Custom Keyboard Designer: best fit for assigning key functions
Custom Keyboard Designer on Google Play is the most direct choice when you want to build a layout and decide what individual keys do. Its listing says users can assign functions to keys and freely arrange layouts. The listing’s tagline is “Design your custom keyboard — control every layout, key and function.”

In-app purchase availability and exact prices can vary by region and change over time; check the listing on your device before building a layout around a paid feature. The listing reports 100K+ downloads, a store-reported band rather than an independent measure of satisfaction or quality.
Check privacy and compatibility claims
The Google Play listing says the keyboard works on Android phones, tablets, and Wear OS watches. Verify that the current listing supports your device and Android version. The store’s data-safety section declares that the app collects no data and shares none with third parties; those are developer-provided disclosures, not an independent privacy audit.

FlorisBoard: open source with specific behavior controls
FlorisBoard’s F-Droid listing describes configurable gestures for swipes, the spacebar, and delete, as well as customizable themes and keypress sound and vibration. A project release discussion documents a delete-key long-press setting that switches between deleting the last character and deleting the last word. That is useful if your target is specifically the delete key; it is not evidence of a general editor for assigning any function to any key.
The official theme documentation explains theme extensions and how to import or create themes. Theme support concerns appearance and should not be mistaken for arbitrary key-function remapping. F-Droid lists FlorisBoard 0.5.2 as requiring Android 8.0 or newer, while the project repository describes the app as beta. Check both the current release information and device requirements before installing.

AnySoftKeyboard: broad settings, but no established arbitrary key remapping
AnySoftKeyboard’s project page lists gesture typing, correction and next-word suggestions, dark mode, per-app tint, sound and vibration on keypress, and customization of emoji accessed with a long press. Those settings may suit someone seeking a configurable keyboard generally. The reviewed feature listing does not establish arbitrary individual-key function assignment, so it is not the documented choice for remapping a chosen key to a custom action.

- Assign a function to a chosen key or make one key perform multiple functions: start with Custom Keyboard Designer and check whether the desired function is in the free base package or an optional purchase.
- Change delete-key long-press behavior or configure gestures: consider FlorisBoard, while recognizing that the documented delete choice is specific rather than general remapping.
- Adjust typing aids, themes, sound, vibration, or emoji long-press behavior: AnySoftKeyboard lists these settings, but do not assume they include arbitrary key reassignment.
There is no independent comparative benchmark in the cited product information establishing that one of these keyboards is faster, more accurate, or preferred by users. Treat claims of faster input on an app listing as the publisher’s claim, not a measured comparison.
