For an older car, start with an aftermarket Android Auto receiver, then verify its wired or wireless connection, physical fit, and installation requirements for your exact vehicle. There is no universal best head unit: the right choice depends on your phone, dashboard opening and clearance, and which factory features you want to keep.
What to check before choosing an Android Auto head unit
Android Auto compatibility involves three things: the car or aftermarket stereo, the phone, and the connection method. Google lists aftermarket stereo makers and advises checking compatibility for the vehicle, stereo, and phone. Its compatibility page says Android Auto works with over 500 vehicle models; that figure is Google’s undated wording, not a count of cars that need an aftermarket receiver. Check Google’s current Android Auto compatibility information.
Wired or wireless connection
Google says most wired Android Auto connections require Android 9.0 or higher. Wireless Android Auto requires Android 11.0 or higher, as do select newer vehicles; wireless use also depends on having a compatible phone and a receiver or car that supports it. Check Google’s current requirements and the exact receiver specification before buying, because support differs by model and can change. Google’s Android Auto requirements.

Check the dashboard opening and the space behind it, not just the advertised screen size. Chassis depth, wiring space, nearby switches and vents, and the screen’s final position can all affect installation. If considering a floating display, make sure it can be positioned without blocking controls or the driver’s view. Sony specifically cautions that its XAV-AX8100 should not obstruct the driver’s field of vision.

Factory features and installation parts
A compatible wiring harness connects the car’s electrical system to the receiver, but the required harness and dash kit depend on the vehicle. Also confirm whether the installation can retain steering-wheel controls, a factory amplifier, a backup camera, and any other equipment you rely on. The receiver’s feature list alone does not establish that those features will work in a particular car.
What receiver formats and features make sense?
Conventional chassis
Choose a receiver format that matches the car’s opening and available depth. A receiver that fits the opening on paper may still be too deep for the space behind the dashboard, so confirm fitment for the exact year, make, model, and trim in a vehicle-specific fitment catalog or with a qualified installer.

Single-DIN chassis with a floating screen
A floating-screen receiver can be an option when a conventional double-DIN body is unsuitable, but the screen’s size and mounting position need careful checking. For example, Sony describes the XAV-AX8100 as an 8.95-inch (22.7 cm) display on a single-DIN chassis with a three-way adjustable mount. Its Android Auto connection is wired through USB, not wireless, according to Sony’s product Q&A. This example illustrates a format and connection choice; it does not establish fit for any particular car.

Decide whether you need features such as a rear-camera input, a particular USB-port location, amplifier outputs, or a disc drive. Verify each item on the individual receiver’s specification page rather than assuming it is included across a product family.

How to confirm the receiver will work in your car
- Identify the vehicle and factory audio: note the year, make, model, trim, country, and factory stereo or amplifier configuration.
- Check vehicle-specific fitment: confirm the receiver, dash trim or installation kit, and any interface modules are listed for that exact vehicle. If fitment is unclear, ask a qualified installer before ordering.
- Check the space and screen position: verify opening dimensions, chassis depth, wiring clearance, floating-screen adjustment, and clearance from controls and vents. Make sure the display does not obstruct the driver’s view.
- Confirm wiring and retained features: match the wiring harness and antenna connection, then check support for steering-wheel controls, a factory amplifier, a camera, and other equipment you want to keep. Installation parts are vehicle-specific; a general receiver specification cannot confirm the correct parts. Learn what a wiring harness does.
- Match the phone and connection: check your phone’s Android version and confirm wired or wireless Android Auto support on the exact receiver model and in your region.
- Recheck the documentation before purchase: compatibility, features, and regional availability can change, so use current Google and manufacturer information.
