There is no universally best EC2 instance for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The right choice depends on what you are streaming, the resolution and frame rate, the codec, your encoder, and whether it can use hardware acceleration. For sustained CPU encoding, start by evaluating fixed-performance instances; AWS identifies video encoding as a workload suited to fixed-performance compute. Benchmark your actual encoder and stream before settling on an instance size.

Choose an instance for the encoding workload, not the title

An EC2 instance must do enough work to encode your source continuously, maintain the outbound connection, and run your chosen software. A looped video, gameplay capture, and a camera feed can place very different demands on the encoder. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether encoding is CPU- or hardware-assisted also change the workload.

AWS describes fixed-performance instances as appropriate for consistently high CPU demand and names video encoding as an example. Its compute-optimized family is intended for compute-intensive workloads, including media transcoding. These are sensible families to evaluate, not guarantees that a particular size will handle your stream. AWS recommends testing with the application that will run the workload. AWS explains the difference between burstable and fixed-performance CPU behavior; see also its compute-optimized instance overview.

Why a burstable T instance is a risky default

T instances use CPU credits to govern burst performance. That can be useful for workloads with intermittent CPU demand, but it is not a sound assumption for an encoder that must sustain high CPU use around the clock. For continuous CPU-heavy encoding, evaluate fixed-performance options instead of relying on a burstable instance to maintain peak performance.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When to consider a GPU instance

A GPU instance may make sense if your encoder and chosen codec can use its hardware-encoding path and your workload benefits from it. The fact that an instance has a GPU does not by itself establish that a YouTube livestream will encode better or cost less. Verify software support and compare sustained encoding performance for your actual settings.

Set YouTube’s ingest requirements before sizing EC2

Choose the stream format and quality first, then size and benchmark the instance against those settings. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; supports frame rates up to 60 fps; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its guidance also advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before configuring your encoder.

H.264 bitrate guidance from YouTube

The figures below are YouTube ingest recommendations for H.264, not a measure of EC2 capacity. Use the bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send.

Output H.264 bitrate minimum H.264 bitrate recommended
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

YouTube gives different bitrate ranges for H.265 and AV1. Do not apply the H.264 values to those codecs; use the codec-specific settings on YouTube’s encoder guidance page.

A practical way to select and validate an instance

  1. Define the stream. Write down the source, resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and encoder software. Include the actual motion and audio patterns the stream will contain.
  2. Check encoding support. Establish whether the encoder will run on CPU alone or can use a supported GPU encoding path with your selected codec.
  3. Pick candidate families. Use fixed-performance compute as the baseline for sustained CPU encoding. Compare compute-optimized instances and relevant accelerated instances only where the workload and software support justify them.
  4. Test the real setup. Run the encoder with representative audio and movement at the intended output settings. Watch YouTube stream health and dropped frames, and confirm the instance sustains the workload rather than only handling a brief test.
  5. Compare candidates in the intended Region. Check availability and performance for the specific instance sizes in the AWS Region where the stream will run. AWS recommends benchmarking with the application itself; its instance guidance is a starting point for understanding instance choices, not a substitute for workload testing.
  6. Estimate the full operating cost. Price the instance, operating system, storage, data transfer, and pricing model separately for the Region and usage you expect. A 24/7 monthly bill cannot be responsibly stated without those details.

How to think about 24/7 AWS cost

The EC2 cost depends on the Region, chosen size, operating system, storage, data transfer, and pricing model. The stream’s audience and delivery approach can also make distribution costs material, so an instance price alone may not represent the cost of delivering a live stream.

AWS’s managed Live Streaming on AWS solution gives an example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event with approximately 1,000 viewers and SD-540p output in US East (N. Virginia): $2.50 for live encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for 791 GB of distribution. This is a configuration-specific example across multiple AWS services, not an EC2 encoder price or a 24/7 estimate. See AWS’s managed live-streaming solution and example.

Keep YouTube rights and live-stream rules in view

EC2 capacity does not grant permission to broadcast the material you stream. Before looping music, video, gameplay, or other third-party content, confirm that you have the necessary rights and that the content complies with YouTube’s current policies. A stream that runs reliably can still face copyright claims or other platform enforcement. Review YouTube’s applicable live streaming requirements and encoder guidance and the rights and policy status of your content before going live.

When a cloud streaming service is a better fit

If your aim is to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube rather than operate and maintain an EC2 encoder, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it loops from the cloud, supports uploads up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
