The right alternative depends on who should see your photos and videos. For public conversations with media, compare Threads and Bluesky; for a photo-first feed on an open social network, consider Pixelfed; for temporary sharing with people you know, Instagram Instants is a narrower fit. These services differ in audience, privacy, video limits, and how content is organized, so test the features you need before moving your followers or workflow.

Threads: public conversation with media
Threads is a conversation-led social app that supports text posts alongside photos and video. Meta’s July 2023 launch announcement described posts with links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long, with sign-in through an Instagram account. Treat the five-minute figure and account details as specifications from that announcement, not a guarantee of today’s limits or sign-in requirements; check the current app before building a workflow around them.
Meta’s later Threads messaging update describes direct and group messages that support photos, videos, GIFs, and stickers, alongside message-request controls and a hidden folder for unwanted messages. Threads is a reasonable place to start if you want public discussion and a route to private conversations in one product. It is not a photo-portfolio service: its emphasis is conversation, and you should verify its current audience, feed, and messaging controls for your needs.

Pixelfed is worth investigating if you care more about a photo-centric feed and an open social network than about reaching one large centralized audience. A February 2025 TechCrunch report describes photo and video sharing, chronological feeds, direct messages, iOS and Android apps, and an ad-free, open-source, decentralized model based on ActivityPub.

That description is a snapshot from the report’s publication date, not a guarantee of today’s app availability or feature set. Pixelfed is federated: participation is spread across independently operated servers, often called instances. Before joining, check the server’s rules, moderation practices, active community, and whether the people you want to reach are there. The available evidence does not establish an audience size comparable to Instagram or X, nor does it guarantee reach or permanence across servers.
Bluesky: public posts and short video
Bluesky may suit public conversation that includes short clips, but it is not a choice for private-profile sharing. Its September 11, 2024 video announcement specified one video per post, up to 60 seconds, in MP4, MPEG, WebM, or MOV format, with subtitles supported. At that time, uploads were capped at 25 videos or 10 GB per day. Those are dated specifications; confirm the current limits in the app before relying on them.

Bluesky’s privacy information describes posts and profiles as public and says private profiles are not available. It also explains that deleting a post removes attached images from storage immediately, while text can take longer to be fully deleted from storage. The same page describes data portability across servers through AT Protocol, but said in 2024 that non-developer export tooling was still being built. Do not use Bluesky for sensitive photos meant only for a restricted audience, and do not treat deleting a post as instant removal of all its text from storage.
Instagram Instants: ephemeral photos for a small circle
Instants is not a full public replacement for X. Meta describes it as a way to share unedited, real-time photos with Close Friends or mutual followers. According to Meta’s May 2026 announcement, an Instant disappears after it is opened or becomes unavailable after 24 hours; the account holder can retain it in a private archive for up to one year. Meta says the feature is available globally inside Instagram, while the standalone app is available only in select countries. Check the recipient rules and local app availability if you are considering it for casual, temporary sharing.

Test the destination before you move
- Define the audience. Decide whether you need public discovery, a photo community, or sharing limited to people you know.
- Check the current rules. Review the destination’s in-app limits, privacy settings, and deletion behavior. Features can change after the dated announcements cited here.
- Try representative media. Post one typical photo and video, including any format, duration, or subtitle needs that matter to you.
- Confirm your contacts and community. Check whether the people you want to reach are already there; for Pixelfed, also assess the chosen server’s activity and rules.
- Keep the old account until ready. Avoid abandoning or deleting it until the destination works for your audience and workflow. For sensitive images, consult the destination’s current privacy and deletion documentation first.
