The Manhattan T4-R is the clearest documented alternative for UK viewers who want to record Freeview and watch catch-up services, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for the Panasonic DMR-4X1010’s Blu-ray archiving workflow. The Panasonic is a Japan-market recorder announced for release in late October 2026; it records to its hard drive first, then lets users manually transfer recordings to supported discs.
What makes the DMR-4X1010 difficult to replace?
Panasonic’s Japanese-market DMR-4X1010 combines a 10TB hard drive, 11 tuners across terrestrial, BS/CS and 4K satellite configurations, recordable Blu-ray support, and Ultra HD Blu-ray playback, according to its official specifications. Panasonic’s September 2026 announcement scheduled its release for late October 2026. It is not an established UK model, so UK availability and compatibility should not be assumed.
The distinction that matters most for archiving is how recording works: Panasonic UK Support says the programme must be recorded to the HDD first and then manually transferred to a supported disc. Direct recording to DVD or Blu-ray is not possible. The Panasonic support guidance describes transfers to listed BD-R and BD-RE formats, including 100GB BD-R/BD-RE and 128GB BD-R media in the product specifications. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

Panasonic also describes “up to 10 channels for about 28 days” as a capability of its All-in-One DIGA series. That series-level claim should not be read as a guaranteed limit for every model or recording mode.

Best documented UK alternative: Manhattan T4-R
For a UK household whose priority is scheduled Freeview recording rather than removable-media archiving, the Manhattan T4-R is the strongest evidenced option here. Freeview’s T4-R product listing specifies a 500GB hard drive with storage for up to 300 hours, the ability to record two channels while watching a third, and access to on-demand services.
That makes it a platform-specific HDD recorder, not a confirmed Blu-ray archive replacement. The cited listing does not establish that the T4-R can transfer recordings to Blu-ray or other removable media. If keeping programmes independently of the recorder is essential, confirm export and disc-writing support for any candidate before buying.

Choose by reception platform and archive needs
- Choose by broadcast platform: match the recorder to your reception and services—Freeview via aerial, Freesat via satellite, or Freely-delivered services over IP. A device built for one platform is not automatically a substitute for another.
- Check simultaneous recording limits: compare how many channels the specific model can record at once and whether viewing another channel is possible. The T4-R’s stated limit is two recordings while watching a third.
- Size the storage for your use: HDD capacity alone does not tell you how many hours will fit; recording mode and programme quality matter. Treat published hour estimates as model-specific claims.
- Separate catch-up from recording: on-demand services may require broadband and do not necessarily let you keep a broadcast recording. Check network requirements and the service list for your region.
