Google Photos is the simplest app-based alternative for keeping an iPhone photo library in a separate cloud account; Synology Photos on a NAS suits people who want storage they control at home. Neither should be trusted as a second copy until its upload is complete and you have checked that the photos are present in the destination.

That distinction matters because iCloud Photos is a syncing service: edits and deletions can carry across devices, and Apple says iCloud Photos content is not duplicated in iCloud Backup. If you want protection from accidental deletion or service changes, verify an independent copy before deleting originals, turning off syncing, or freeing phone storage.

What makes an alternative a real backup?

Start by deciding whether you want an accessible library that stays synchronized or an independent copy for recovery. A service can show photos in its app without every item having uploaded, and a synced library can propagate deletions rather than preserve an untouched archive.

  • Synchronized library: convenient access across devices, but changes may carry across them.
  • Independent copy: a separate destination that you verify before changing or deleting the source. For stronger protection against loss at home, keep an additional copy somewhere else as well.

Apple says iCloud Photos stores originals in their original formats and full resolution, and keeps edits up to date across devices. Deleting a photo on one device deletes it on the others. Apple says deleted items remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days, after which they are permanently deleted. With Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution originals stay in iCloud while smaller versions may remain on the iPhone. Apple also states that iCloud Photos content is not duplicated in iCloud Backup. Apple’s iCloud Photos guide explains these behaviors.

Which iCloud Photos alternative should you choose?

Option Best suited to What to know
Google Photos People who want an app-based cloud destination separate from Apple’s Photos library Check upload status; the app can display local items that have not uploaded.
Synology Photos on a NAS People comfortable setting up and maintaining storage hardware at home Install drives, configure access and verify iOS uploads; plan a separate off-site copy.

Both options can hold a separate copy, but they differ in who operates the storage. Google manages the cloud service; a NAS puts setup, capacity, maintenance and backup planning in your hands. Current storage and hardware prices vary, so compare the costs for your own capacity needs rather than assuming one option is cheaper.

Google Photos: an app-based cloud alternative

Google Photos can back up an iPhone library to a Google Account. Its iOS app provides backup controls, an overall progress/status indicator, per-item backup status and a setting for upload quality. Google warns that completion time depends on factors such as network conditions and upload size, and recommends keeping the app open and the iPhone plugged in to help the upload finish. Google’s iPhone and iPad backup instructions describe the controls.

Verify the upload before relying on it

  1. In Google Photos, enable backup for the Google Account you intend to use and choose the available upload-quality setting that fits your needs.
  2. Check the app’s overall backup status and individual items’ status. A photo visible in the app is not proof that it has uploaded; Google Photos may show items stored only on the device.
  3. Keep Google Photos open and connect the iPhone to power while the initial library upload runs. Wait until the app reports that backup is complete.
  4. Check the uploaded library in the Google Account destination before deleting local originals or changing iCloud settings.

Google’s migration guidance says to download iCloud copies when needed and keep Google Photos open until the library has backed up before freeing local space. It also advises considering whether the photos are in Google Photos before turning off iCloud photo syncing. Follow the current iOS interface and Google’s instructions for your account when migrating; do not treat starting an upload as proof it has finished. Google’s guidance on making Google Photos the default photo app covers this workflow.

Set up and check the mobile backup

  1. Install the drives in the NAS, set up the device and configure secure access and storage capacity.
  2. Install Synology Photos Mobile on the iPhone, connect it to your NAS account and configure the photo-backup destination.
  3. Enable notifications and connect the iPhone to a charger while backup runs; Synology says these conditions may improve backup efficiency.
  4. Inspect the destination in Synology Photos and confirm that expected photos and videos are present before removing them from the iPhone or iCloud.

There is an important iOS edge case: Synology says delayed iCloud synchronization among shared iOS devices can mean Synology Photos misses images from the delayed interval. Do not assume that turning on mobile backup captures every item automatically; inspect the NAS destination for completeness. Synology’s specifications and notes describe the limitation.

A NAS gives you direct control over local storage, but it is not an out-of-the-box cloud subscription. You are responsible for drives, setup, capacity and ongoing maintenance. RAID can help keep a system available after some drive failures, but it is not a separate off-site copy; arrange another backup location if you need protection from loss of the NAS or home.

How to switch without losing photos

  1. Choose the destination: use Google Photos for an app-managed cloud copy or Synology Photos if you want to operate home storage.
  2. Start the upload while leaving the source intact: do not delete photos or disable iCloud Photos simply because backup has been enabled.
  3. Wait for completion: use Google Photos’ backup status or Synology Photos’ destination contents, and account for iOS background-upload delays.
  4. Verify the actual library: check that expected photos and videos appear in the destination, not just in the app’s local-device view or a list of pending items.
  5. Only then make changes: download iCloud originals first if you need local copies, and free space or change sync settings only after confirming the separate copy is usable.

For Google Photos, this follows Google’s migration guidance to keep the app open until backup completes and confirm the photos are there before freeing local space. For Synology Photos, include a direct check for any photos delayed by iCloud synchronization.

Which option is right for your library?

  • Choose Google Photos if you prefer a cloud service and want to manage uploads in an iPhone app. Its main practical requirement is to confirm that the library finished uploading rather than relying on what the app displays.
  • Choose Synology Photos if you are comfortable buying and installing drives, managing a home device and maintaining a separate backup plan. It offers local storage control, but requires more hands-on work and a check for iOS upload gaps.
  • Keep iCloud Photos as your primary synced library if cross-device synchronization is the feature you need; add a verified separate copy if you also want recovery protection.
