For packages you hope to reuse across agents, the Agent Plugins 1.0 standard offers a shared way to package skills and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers—but portability is limited to supported components and client behavior can differ.
Which Claude Code plugin alternatives should you compare?
These options address different needs: a plugin ecosystem tied to a particular product, a shared packaging standard, or a baseline for the kinds of integrations you want. The official documentation establishes availability and packaging features, not a universal winner or a hands-on quality ranking.
| Option | What it documents | Useful comparison points |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot plugins | Plugins distribute preconfigured capabilities to Copilot CLI, Copilot cloud agent, and the Copilot app. Agent Plugins 1.0 uses standard locations for skills and MCP servers; other components can be client-specific. GitHub Copilot plugin documentation | Which Copilot surface you use, marketplace or repository distribution, supported manifest version, and whether needed components are portable or Copilot-specific. |
| Codex plugins | OpenAI describes plugins as reusable skills plus connections to external services. Public plugins share a directory between ChatGPT and Codex; packages can include a root manifest, skills, and MCP configuration. Codex plugins and Codex plugin packaging guide | Shared-directory availability, local or repository distribution versus public listing, whether MCP is needed, and how the target surface executes components. |
| Agent Plugins 1.0 | VS Code describes an open packaging standard for skills and MCP servers across multiple clients, including Copilot in VS Code, Copilot CLI, and the Copilot app. Other capabilities can use client-specific namespaces. Agent plugins in VS Code | Which clients support the standard, which components travel with the package, and how each client handles manifest versions. |
| Claude Marketplace (baseline) | Listings include GitHub, security guidance, TypeScript and Python language servers, Vercel, Figma, Supabase, and other integrations. Claude plugins | Use listing categories to identify workflow coverage you want elsewhere. Marketplace presence alone does not establish quality or suitability. |
What can actually be portable across coding agents?
Agent Plugins 1.0 makes skills and MCP servers the clearest documented portable component types. A shared package can provide reusable instructions or connections to external services, but this does not ensure every client executes them identically. Hooks, agents, commands, and other capabilities may rely on client-specific additions.
Codex packaging illustrates the distinction: skills and MCP configuration can sit at the package root, while client-specific settings can remain in a namespaced extension. That structure supports reuse without claiming that all target clients support every feature in the package. See the Codex plugin packaging guide and the Agent Plugins documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why should you check manifest and client support?
A common format is not a guarantee of compatibility. GitHub’s CLI reference documents that the CLI recognizes specified Agent Plugins manifest versions and rejects a declared version it does not support rather than silently treating it as a legacy package. Check the exact target client’s supported manifest version before reusing a plugin. GitHub Copilot CLI plugin reference
Also confirm that the client supports the specific components your workflow depends on. A package may include portable skills or MCP configuration alongside additions that only work in one ecosystem.

How do you choose an extension system?
- List the workflow you need to extend. Identify whether you need reusable skills, external-service connections through MCP, or client-specific capabilities such as hooks or commands.
- Choose the agent surfaces you actually use. Copilot plugins document support across CLI, cloud agent, and app; Codex plugins have a shared directory between ChatGPT and Codex. Verify the relevant surface in its official documentation.
- Check discovery and distribution. Determine whether the package is available through a marketplace or public directory, or whether you will use a local or repository-based package. Availability and distribution differ between ecosystems.
- Verify portability component by component. Confirm supported manifest versions and whether skills, MCP configuration, and any client-specific additions work in each target client.
- Assess the integration fit, not just the listing. Compare the actual tools and services available for your workflow. A marketplace entry is evidence of a listing, not proof of quality, security, or compatibility with your project.
What the official documentation does—and does not—establish
The official pages establish plugin packaging, distribution, and supported product surfaces. They do not establish a universal best option, relative performance, price comparison, or comparative reliability, security, ease of use, or extension quality. Treat the choice as a fit and compatibility decision rather than a proven ranking. Feature details reflect documentation checked on October 4, 2026; live product pages and marketplace contents can change.
