These options are not universal, interchangeable checkouts: merchant participation, region, product feeds, and rollout status all matter.
What counts as a ChatGPT shopping and payments alternative?
“Alternative” can mean three different things: a retailer’s own shopping assistant, a general-purpose assistant with merchant checkout integrations, or a payment provider that helps merchants accept orders initiated in an assistant. Those categories answer different needs.
- Retailer assistant: helps you research and compare items within one store’s catalog. Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping fits this model.
- General assistant with merchant integrations: may let you discover products from participating merchants and complete a purchase in the assistant experience. Copilot Checkout and Perplexity’s PayPal-enabled flow are examples, subject to availability.
- Merchant payment integration: gives a merchant a way to enable a checkout button in an AI surface. PayPal’s documented Braintree paths for ChatGPT Apps and Google AI Mode/Gemini are merchant-side integrations, not proof that every consumer can use them.
For any option, check the catalog or participating merchants, the surface where it works, the payment method, and whether you finish the order in chat or are sent elsewhere.

Which option should you choose?
Choose Alexa for Shopping if you are already shopping on Amazon
Amazon describes Alexa for Shopping as an assistant for product research, comparison questions, recommendations, and discovery, drawing on Amazon’s product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&As, and information from across the web. Its value is convenience within Amazon’s store, not a promise of unbiased comparison across retailers. The current name is Alexa for Shopping; Rufus is the former name.

Choose Copilot Checkout if you find an eligible merchant offer in Copilot
Copilot Checkout is described for Copilot.com and the Copilot mobile app. Microsoft says merchant inventory and in-context checkout integrations involve PayPal, Shopify, and Stripe, but merchants must opt in and meet its Merchant Center and product-feed requirements. Do not assume every item discussed in Copilot can be purchased there.
Microsoft Advertising’s January 2026 post says its internal data found “53% more purchases within 30 minutes of interaction” and that journeys with shopping intent were “194% more likely to result in a purchase” when they included Copilot than journeys that did not. These are Microsoft-reported figures, not an independent comparison of assistants or a guarantee of an individual shopper’s result. Microsoft Advertising post

Choose Perplexity with PayPal when its participating-merchant checkout appears
PayPal describes a conversational shopping flow in Perplexity where users can receive recommendations and, for participating merchants, use Instant Buy or Buy with PayPal. The exact option depends on the merchant and availability; a recommendation alone does not mean the item is eligible for in-chat checkout.
Treat ChatGPT PayPal checkout as a rollout, not a guaranteed feature
PayPal says checkout in ChatGPT is beginning to roll out. Its guide cautions that it may not be available to every user, region, or merchant, so check whether the payment option actually appears for your account and the item you want.

Consider Google AI Mode or Gemini only where a merchant supports the flow
PayPal’s merchant documentation describes a route for merchants to add a Buy button in Google AI Mode and Gemini using Google Pay through Braintree. That is evidence of an integration path, not evidence that all Gemini users can buy in chat or that a broad set of stores is available.

Sometimes. Copilot and Perplexity have documented in-context or conversational checkout flows, but they depend on merchant enrollment and other availability conditions. Amazon’s assistant is integrated with its own shopping experience. PayPal’s ChatGPT checkout is described as rolling out, while its Google AI Mode and Gemini documentation is aimed at merchants and does not establish uniform consumer availability.

Before placing an order, confirm the merchant, item, price, delivery details, and final payment method on the checkout screen. An assistant’s product description or recommendation is not a guarantee that the information is complete or current.
How the payment integrations work
PayPal’s merchant documentation distinguishes two technical routes. For ChatGPT Apps, its Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) integration enables instant checkout using delegated payment tokens through Braintree. For Google AI Mode and Gemini, its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) integration enables a Buy button using the Google Pay payment handler through Braintree. PayPal describes the assistant as handling product discovery and checkout orchestration; the merchant still participates in the integration and order fulfillment.
These are merchant-side descriptions, not a consumer-facing promise that all users, regions, or stores have the same experience. A payment brand in an integration does not make different assistants’ catalogs, checkout flows, or availability equivalent.
What to check before you pay
- Merchant and listing: Verify who is selling the item and that the product, variant, and price match what you intend to order.
- Checkout location: See whether the assistant completes the purchase in its own experience or takes you to a merchant checkout.
- Payment method: Confirm the wallet or payment route shown at checkout; an integration may not appear for every merchant or user.
- Order details: Review shipping address, taxes, delivery terms, return policy, and order confirmation with the merchant.
- Availability: If a checkout button is missing, the merchant, region, account, or product may not be supported. Do not infer eligibility from an assistant’s ability to discuss the item.
Bottom line
For Amazon-focused product research, use Alexa for Shopping. For purchases across participating merchants, Copilot Checkout or Perplexity’s PayPal flow may be more relevant when available. ChatGPT PayPal checkout is still rolling out, and Google’s documented PayPal route is a merchant integration rather than proof of broad consumer access. Choose by the specific store and checkout option you can verify, not by assuming that every AI assistant offers the same shopping catalog or payment experience.
