If you want to find a word inside a photo already on your phone, scan new paperwork into a searchable PDF, or search a folder of scanned PDFs, you need different tools for each job. BrainShot has been described in recent coverage as a prototype rather than a proven live OCR service, so the practical alternatives depend on where your documents are now.

What BrainShot is—and what its demo does not establish

An October 3, 2026 iTechGuides article describes BrainShot as a prototype intended to turn photos of receipts, invoices, warranties, letters, and forms into a searchable personal document library. The proposed workflow is to capture or import images, extract details into records, keep the originals, and later find or export documents.

That article also says the submitted demo simulates AI extraction; it does not demonstrate live AI processing or reliable document understanding. This is secondary reporting, not an official BrainShot specification. Treat BrainShot as a concept, not a verified OCR product with demonstrated accuracy.

Choose an alternative by where your documents are

Starting material Best-fit option in this guide What it is meant to produce
Photos or screenshots already in your phone library ScanSeek AI Search across photos, screenshots, and documents
Paper you are scanning now Google Drive Searchable PDFs or JPGs; a separate conversion flow can extract text
A collection of scanned PDFs DocFind An index for searching across selected PDF files

These are workflow matches, not a ranking from an accuracy test. A searchable result can mean recognized words, a file you can search, or a cross-document index; it does not necessarily mean the app has extracted reliable structured fields or preserved the page’s layout.

For finding words in photos already on your phone

ScanSeek AI

ScanSeek AI is the closest fit among these options if your target is a photo or screenshot that already exists in your camera roll. Its App Store listing says it searches screenshots, photos, and documents, and describes OCR and indexing as on-device.

Those are developer listing claims, not independent evidence of privacy or search performance. The listing says there are not enough ratings to show a ratings overview. Apple also notes that the developer’s privacy disclosures are not verified by Apple and lists possible usage- and advertising-related data handling. Before importing sensitive receipts or personal documents, check the current listing and the app’s privacy policy for the disclosures that apply to you.

For scanning new paper into searchable files

Google Drive

Google documents a mobile workflow for scanning receipts and other paper documents: use the phone camera, adjust the scan, add pages if needed, and save the result as a searchable PDF or JPG. See Google Drive’s scanning instructions for the current steps in its app.

Drive also documents a separate desktop route for converting PDF and image files to text through Google Docs. Google recommends sharp, well-lit images and gives a 2 MB file-size recommendation for that conversion flow. Its instructions warn that lists, tables, columns, footnotes, and endnotes may not be detected or retained. So OCR can make words searchable without preserving the original’s layout or turning a table into dependable structured data. See Google’s PDF and image text-conversion guidance.

OneDrive, not Microsoft Lens, for Microsoft’s current scanning path

Microsoft Lens is no longer a current recommendation for making new scans. Microsoft says Lens was removed from the Apple and Google app stores on February 9, 2026, and that new scans stopped after March 9, 2026. Earlier scans may remain accessible if Lens stays installed and you sign in to the last account used in the app. Microsoft’s stated replacement is OneDrive’s built-in scanner; its Lens retirement page says OneDrive cannot save scans locally. Read Microsoft’s Lens retirement notice before migrating an existing Lens workflow.

A separate Microsoft support page describes mobile OCR for scanned PDFs in OneDrive: recognizing, searching, highlighting, and copying text. Microsoft says the feature is rolling out, so availability may vary. Check OneDrive’s OCR instructions for current availability and steps.

For searching across an existing PDF archive

DocFind

DocFind is aimed at a different problem from camera-roll search: finding a word across a library of scanned PDFs. Its product page says it indexes user-selected PDFs and runs on-device OCR on scanned pages, so a query can return matches across the archive. It also says files remain on the device and that users select documents through the system file picker. These privacy and capability statements are vendor claims, not an independent audit. See DocFind’s product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes it a more direct fit for PDFs already stored in a file library than for arbitrary pictures spread through a phone’s photo collection. Check that your files are accessible to the app’s picker and confirm its current behavior before relying on it for sensitive records.

What searchable does—and does not—mean

  • Recognized text: OCR identifies words in an image or scanned page. Recognition can make a document findable without extracting accurate names, dates, totals, or other fields into a structured record.
  • Searchable file: a PDF may contain a text layer that lets you search within that file. That does not automatically provide a single search across every PDF you own.
  • Cross-file index: a library tool such as DocFind is designed to search across selected files, whereas ScanSeek’s listing describes searching photos, screenshots, and documents in a phone-oriented workflow.
  • Faithful layout: searchable text does not guarantee that tables, columns, notes, handwriting, or page formatting will be preserved. Google’s conversion guidance specifically warns about lists, tables, columns, footnotes, and endnotes.

How to choose without assuming an accuracy winner

  1. Identify your source: existing camera-roll images point toward a photo-search tool; paper you are capturing now points toward a scanning workflow; an archive of PDFs points toward a PDF index.
  2. Decide what you need back: searching a recognized word, saving a searchable PDF, and retrieving matches across many documents are different outputs.
  3. Check storage and data handling: distinguish local processing and local files from account-based cloud storage. Review the app’s current privacy disclosures and policies for your region, especially before adding financial or identity documents.
  4. Test with representative pages: check whether the words you need are found and whether important layout or fields survive. No comparative OCR-accuracy or privacy audit is established here, so do not treat a product description as proof of performance.
