You may not need another all-in-one study app. Start with the interruption you want to remove: silence notifications with your phone’s built-in Focus controls, block tempting apps or websites with a dedicated tool, or use flashcards if the real task is reviewing material. Choose the smallest setup that addresses your problem.
Choose by the problem you want to solve
Study apps often bundle distinct jobs—focus, planning, notes, mindfulness and flashcards—but you do not have to adopt the whole bundle. The University of Queensland’s student guide organizes apps by function and advises trying only those relevant to your needs. Its examples of interruptions, such as notifications and a social-media break that runs long, are editorial scenarios rather than measured prevalence findings. See UQ’s guide to student apps.
- Notifications are the problem: try the Focus or Digital Wellbeing settings already on your phone.
- You open distracting apps or sites automatically: choose a blocker, then decide how much difficulty you want to bypass it.
- You need a visible timer or motivation cue: consider a focus timer such as Forest.
- You need to recall facts or concepts: use a flashcard tool such as Anki or Quizlet; these are review tools, not distraction blockers.
These tools have different features, not proven differences in learning outcomes. The cited sources do not establish that one raises grades, improves retention, or works best for everyone.
Try your device’s built-in controls first
iPhone: Apple Focus
On iPhone, open Settings > Focus to configure a Focus. Apple lets you choose which people and apps may send notifications and set a schedule so a Focus turns on automatically. Some Focus filters can also apply to apps or the device. The available choices depend on your setup; consult Apple’s iPhone Focus instructions for the current steps.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.

- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
Android: Focus mode
On Android, open Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls > Focus mode (menu names can vary by device). Choose apps to pause, then turn Focus mode on or set a schedule. While it is active, selected apps cannot be used and their notifications are withheld; Google also provides a limited break option. See Google’s Digital Wellbeing instructions.
Built-in controls are a sensible first step when the issue is app access or notification interruption on one phone. If you need website blocking, cross-device sessions, or a stronger barrier, compare the dedicated options below.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

Forest: pick it for the visual timer
Forest makes a focus session visible: a virtual tree grows while the session runs. Its official page also describes app blocking, screen-time scheduling, analytics and group focus. Forest says the core timer and Deep Focus app blocking are available in the free tier; Plus includes options such as a custom app allowlist, multiple-app or site Time Guard, and expanded analytics. Verify plan details on Forest’s official site, since features can change.

Forest’s FAQ says it is not a medical treatment for ADHD. Treat it as a focus tool, not therapy or a clinical intervention.
Freedom: choose it for cross-device blocking
Freedom’s student page describes blocking distracting websites and apps across Mac, Windows, Android and iOS, with sessions that can be scheduled in advance. That makes it worth considering if you move between a phone and computer and want one blocking workflow. The vendor page does not establish that every feature behaves identically on every operating system. Check details at Freedom’s student page.

- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Cold Turkey: choose it for a harder-to-stop desktop block
Cold Turkey Blocker can block websites, applications or the internet, with exceptions. Its site says an active block can be locked so it is almost impossible to stop. That added friction may suit someone who deliberately wants a strict desktop session; it is less appropriate if you need to interrupt blocks easily. The site gives Windows and macOS installation directions and says settings and statistics are stored locally. It describes the app as a one-time purchase, but a current price is not stated on the cited page. See Cold Turkey’s official site.
Use Anki or Quizlet for review, not distraction blocking
Flashcards address a different study task: retrieving information from memory. They do not replace Focus mode or a site blocker.

Anki
Anki is a dedicated flashcard program with media support. Its official site says AnkiWeb synchronization is free; it lists the desktop version as free, AnkiMobile as the official iOS app, and AnkiDroid as a free Android app developed by contributors. Check the app’s identity before installing: similar names can be confusing. Details are at Anki’s official site.
Quizlet
UQ describes Quizlet as a tool for turning class notes into digital flashcards and using practice tests, essay prompts and games. The prices and ratings in that guide came from store profiles updated in November 2025, so they should not be treated as current 2026 figures. Quizlet’s inclusion here is about practice materials, not distraction blocking.
Quick Recap
A simple way to decide
- Name the interruption or task. Is it notifications, opening particular apps or sites, difficulty staying with a timer, or the need to review course material?
- Try the narrowest option. Set a built-in Focus schedule for notifications or selected phone apps before adding another service.
- Escalate only if needed. Use Forest for a visual focus session, Freedom for cross-device blocking, or Cold Turkey if you want a locked desktop block.
- Keep review separate. Add Anki or Quizlet only if flashcard-based practice is useful for your course.
- Check school rules before installing. UQ advises checking policy before downloading apps on school computers. That advice concerns installation; it is not a comparison of these apps’ privacy or data-retention practices.
