For a remodel, choose a planning tool by what you need to verify: use an editable floor-plan app to test room proportions and furniture placement, a styling or rendering tool to explore finishes and mood, or a retailer’s planner to work with that retailer’s products. RoomSketcher and Planner 5D lean toward layout work; HomeByMe and Homestyler toward visual exploration; IKEA’s planners toward IKEA products. Treat every result as a planning aid, not proof of measurements, code compliance, or structural feasibility.
Choose a tool for the decision you need to make
“Room design” tools solve different problems. Before choosing one, decide whether you are trying to answer a geometry question—will this layout fit?—or an appearance question—how might these materials and colors look together? A realistic render can help with the second without reliably answering the first.
- Test layout and proportions: Start with an editable floor-plan tool. Look for dimension controls, clear 2D/3D views, and an export or sharing option.
- Explore finishes and atmosphere: Consider a styling or rendering tool when visual concepts matter more than construction-ready plan output.
- Arrange products from one retailer: A catalog-specific planner can help preview that retailer’s items, but it may not suit a design built around other products.
- Make a presentation board: Use a graphic-design tool for mood boards and simple visual layouts, not as a substitute for a measured 3D plan.
Compare the main alternatives
| Tool | Best fit | What to check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| RoomSketcher | Editable 2D/3D plans and sharing a legible layout. | Check its AI conversion and capture features, measurement display, export options, and current free-tier or credit limits. Its own comparison emphasizes floor-plan accuracy and editing. Block Renovation’s planning guide and RoomSketcher’s floor-plan comparison discuss the category and product. |
| Planner 5D | DIY layout testing in 2D/3D and visualizing furniture. | Check conversion or scanning availability, measurement controls, export workflow, and plan limits. Sources describe AI features and walkthroughs, but note that measurement or construction-oriented output may be limited. Block Renovation and RoomSketcher’s comparison. |
| HomeByMe | Styling, materials, and photorealistic room renders. | Decide whether you need an editable plan or mainly visual exploration, then verify available exports and current project limits. RoomSketcher’s HomeByMe comparison. |
| Homestyler | Decorating, branded furniture, and render quality. | Check whether its plan-editing depth is adequate for your dimensional needs; attractive imagery is not the same as measured documentation. RoomSketcher’s floor-plan comparison. |
| IKEA planners and IKEA Kreativ | Planning around IKEA products and previewing catalog items. | Account for the product-catalog restriction and the separate planner workflows used for different room types. RoomSketcher’s floor-plan comparison. |
| Floorplanner | Browser-based layouts and quick interior design concepts. | Verify current free-tier restrictions, export features, and whether its capabilities meet your project’s needs. TechRadar’s interior design software roundup, published September 9, 2025, is an older overview; do not assume its prices are current. |
| Canva | Mood boards and simple visual layouts. | Use it as a graphic-design workflow, not as a reliable to-scale 3D planning tool. RoomSketcher’s comparison. |
These product descriptions are based on vendor-authored comparisons and a third-party review, not a new independent hands-on test. Features, device support, and plan limits can change. Confirm current details on each product’s official plan and feature pages before relying on them.
How to compare tools for your remodel
- Check what you can start with. Can you draw from scratch, import a plan, convert a sketch, scan a room, or only upload a photograph? Choose a workflow that matches the information you have.
- Separate geometry from appearance. Find out whether the app creates an editable layout with dimensions or a visual concept that may alter the room’s geometry. If placement and fit matter, prioritize the former.
- Inspect what you can share. Check whether you can export or share a plan in a form a designer, contractor, or family member can interpret. A polished image and a legible plan serve different purposes.
- Check catalog dependence. Determine whether furnishings are generic, branded, or limited to one retailer. A built-in catalog can speed product exploration while narrowing your choices.
- Confirm access and workflow. Establish whether the tool runs in a browser, desktop app, or mobile app, and whether scanning depends on a particular device.
- Verify current costs and limits. Look for free-tier restrictions, export credits, subscriptions, and supported devices on the product’s current pages. Older reviews may describe plans or prices that have changed.
Start with measured dimensions, not a visual guess
A layout is only as useful as its starting information. Measure the existing room before entering dimensions; a laser distance measure is one optional way to collect them. Block Renovation describes room scanning and pairing a Bluetooth laser meter in its measurement workflow. A consumer measurement workflow is not a guarantee of survey-grade accuracy, so have consequential measurements checked by an appropriate professional.

Know what a room planner cannot establish
These tools can help you test proportions early, compare ideas, and communicate a concept. They do not establish structural loads, code compliance, or final dimensions. Block Renovation’s guide puts the boundary plainly: “A few are free, a few cost money, and none of them replaces a contractor, designer, or your local building department.” Have qualified professionals verify measurements and construction decisions, and consult your local building department about applicable requirements.
For a layout-first project, begin with RoomSketcher or Planner 5D and verify their measurement and export workflow against your needs. For finish and style exploration, compare HomeByMe or Homestyler. If IKEA products define the project, use the relevant IKEA planner. In every case, keep the visualizer’s output separate from professional construction verification.
