The right choice depends on the work you do, where you code, how much autonomy you want the tool to have, and how your team reviews generated changes. GitHub Copilot is a practical shortlist choice for developers already working in GitHub and a supported IDE; Amazon Q Developer is worth considering for AWS-focused work, with an important lifecycle caveat: AWS says its IDE plugin support ends April 30, 2027.
Which AI developer tool should you choose?
Start with your workflow rather than a model leaderboard. An inline code assistant, a repository-level agent that edits files, and an AWS-focused helper solve overlapping but different problems. A tool that performs well on one task type may not be the strongest choice for another.
| Tool | What the available evidence supports | Strongest reason to shortlist it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | GitHub documents code suggestions, chat, codebase questions, review, and agent workflows. | You want assistance within an existing GitHub and supported IDE workflow. | Feature availability depends on plan, client, and organization policy; verify current terms. |
| Amazon Q Developer | AWS documents coding assistance through IDE and CLI contexts, plus AWS-oriented help. | Your work spans application code and AWS services or operations. | AWS says IDE plugin support ends April 30, 2027; plan for that transition before adopting the plugin. |
| Cursor, Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Devin | Named in a 2026 study of coding-agent pull requests. | You want to include additional agent candidates in an internal evaluation. | The reviewed evidence does not establish their current features, prices, privacy terms, or support details. |
The table is a shortlist, not a universal ranking. The 2026 study measures pull-request acceptance in particular task categories; it does not measure how much faster every developer will work.
What does the performance evidence actually show?
The paper “Comparing AI Coding Agents: A Task-Stratified Analysis of Pull Request Acceptance,” published for the Association for Computing Machinery’s 23rd International Conference on Mining Software Repositories in 2026, analyzed 7,156 pull requests across five agents. Its reported acceptance rates varied by task category:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Across the study, documentation tasks had an 82.1% acceptance rate and new-feature tasks had a 66.1% acceptance rate.
- Claude Code led the reported documentation category at 92.3% acceptance and the feature category at 72.6%.
- Cursor led the fix category at 80.4% acceptance.
- Codex’s reported acceptance rates ranged from 59.6% to 88.6% across nine categories.
These are study-specific pull-request acceptance figures, not productivity or time-saved measurements. They do not show that a tool makes developers faster by the same percentage, guarantee code quality in your repository, or establish a winner for every project. Treat them as a reason to evaluate tools on the tasks your team actually performs, not as a purchasing verdict.
What does GitHub Copilot offer?

Copilot is a sensible candidate when developers already work in GitHub and a supported IDE and want assistance in that workflow. It is not safe to assume every feature is included for every user: GitHub says plan, client, and organizational policies affect availability. Individual and organizational offerings also differ in management and policy controls.
Context matters when assessing any assistant. GitHub describes suggestion context that can include nearby code and, depending on the feature, open files, repository paths, selected code, frameworks, languages, and dependencies. Before enabling a tool for personal or company code, review the current plan terms, data-use settings, and organization policies. Generated changes still need human review; GitHub’s documentation says users remain responsible for reviewing and approving agentic work.

Lifecycle matters: AWS states that support for Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins will end April 30, 2027, and points users toward Kiro for similar capabilities. If your team is considering the IDE plugin, weigh its AWS-specific fit against the announced end date and establish a transition path before standardizing on it.

- Match the workflow location. Identify whether developers need help in an IDE, GitHub, a terminal or CLI, or alongside AWS services. A tool that requires a workflow change may be less useful even if its capabilities look broad.
- Match the task scope. Separate inline completion and explanations from multi-file changes, test generation, code review, or operational assistance. Decide which of those jobs matter most to your team.
- Check context and data handling. Find out what project information the service can use, what data is transmitted or retained, and which privacy and data-use terms apply to your plan.
- Inspect autonomy and review controls. Establish whether the tool only suggests code or can edit files, run commands, or prepare pull requests. Confirm how developers inspect, approve, and undo its work.
- Compare plan limits and administration. Verify current pricing, free access, usage allowances, model availability, organizational policy controls, and access-management options on the vendor’s live pages.
- Check product lifecycle. Look for support dates and migration plans. For Amazon Q Developer’s IDE plugins, include AWS’s announced April 30, 2027 end-of-support date in the decision.
- Evaluate outcomes on your own work. Run a small comparison on representative tasks and record acceptance or quality measures alongside time and review effort. Treat this as an internal test, not a result established by the published study.
What should you shortlist?
For a developer seeking integrated assistance in an existing GitHub and IDE workflow, start by checking whether the relevant Copilot plan and organization policy provide the features needed. For AWS-focused development, assess Amazon Q Developer’s coding and AWS assistance, but make the announced IDE plugin end date part of the adoption decision. If you are considering Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or Devin, they are candidates identified in the 2026 study; the available evidence here is not enough to make current claims about their product terms or rank them for your team.
