There is no evidence-based universal winner. The best AI model for defensive cybersecurity analysis depends on the job: finding vulnerabilities, reviewing code, validating a finding, proposing a patch, or analyzing information with tools are different tasks. Official vendor reports describe promising capabilities, but their results are not directly comparable. Choose for your authorized workflow, access needs, safeguards, and ability to verify the model’s work—not for a single headline score.
Which AI models are relevant to defensive cybersecurity?
As of October 4, 2026, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google describe different parts of the defensive-security landscape. Some offerings are models; others are software products, API access, or safety measures. They should not be treated as interchangeable entries in a ranked list.
| Provider and offering | What the provider describes | Access or evidence qualification |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI: GPT-5.3-Codex and newer models, including GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.5 | OpenAI’s API guidance classifies these models as having High Cybersecurity Capability under its Preparedness Framework. | Automated safeguards apply through the API. Trusted Access for Cyber is a reviewed access program, not a model name. OpenAI says legitimate defensive work can sometimes be flagged. |
| OpenAI: GPT-5 and GPT-5.1-Codex-Max | OpenAI reports CTF challenge performance of 27% for GPT-5 in August 2025 and 76% for GPT-5.1-Codex-Max in November 2025. | These are OpenAI-reported results for two of its own models at different dates, not a cross-provider comparison. |
| Anthropic: Claude Security | Anthropic describes a code-security product that scans for vulnerabilities, validates findings, and proposes targeted patches. | This is a product workflow, not a model benchmark. Product access and availability may change. |
| Anthropic: Claude Mythos Preview and Claude Mythos 5 | Anthropic describes stronger cybersecurity capability, particularly in exploit reasoning. | Anthropic says initial access is limited to a small number of Project Glasswing partners. |
| Anthropic: Claude Fable 5 | Anthropic describes it as a Mythos-class model intended for general use with additional safeguards. | Check Anthropic’s current availability and access terms before selecting it. |
| Anthropic: Claude Opus 4.6 | Anthropic reports that it found and helped validate more than 500 high-severity vulnerabilities in open-source software. | This is a provider-reported research result from February 5, 2026—not an independent benchmark or a predicted result for another codebase. |
| Google: Gemini and automated red teaming | Google describes using automated red teaming to attack Gemini in realistic ways and identify model security weaknesses, including indirect prompt-injection risks during tool use. | This is information about safety testing, not evidence that Gemini leads a defensive vulnerability-analysis benchmark. |
The table summarizes vendor descriptions and reported evidence, not a measured ranking. The sources do not establish equivalent test samples, methods, dates, or independent replication across providers.
What do the published results actually tell you?
OpenAI’s CTF figures show change over time, not a provider contest
OpenAI’s cyber-resilience report records 27% for GPT-5 on CTF challenges in August 2025 and 76% for GPT-5.1-Codex-Max in November 2025. Those figures describe OpenAI’s reported results for two models at separate dates. They do not establish how either model compares with Claude or Gemini, or how well it will perform on code review, incident analysis, or patch validation. OpenAI also notes that defensive and offensive cyber workflows can draw on the same underlying knowledge and techniques.

Anthropic’s vulnerability count is a research report, not a success rate
Anthropic’s February 5, 2026 report says Claude Opus 4.6 found and helped validate more than 500 high-severity vulnerabilities in open-source software. Anthropic also describes reporting issues and working with maintainers on patches. The count is evidence of work reported by the provider; it does not tell you the probability of finding a vulnerability in your own repository or provide a like-for-like comparison with OpenAI’s CTF results.
Google’s security investment is not a Gemini accuracy score
Google says it uses automated red teaming to probe Gemini in realistic ways, including improving protection against indirect prompt injection during tool use. Separately, Google reports that it awarded $10 million to more than 600 researchers through its generative AI bug bounty program in 2023. That amount concerns Google’s bounty program; it is not a measure of Gemini’s defensive-analysis accuracy.

How should you choose a model for your defensive task?
Start with the output you need and the checks you can perform afterward. A model that can suggest a patch is not thereby proven to find the most vulnerabilities, and a model’s performance on a CTF does not establish its usefulness for threat-intelligence enrichment or incident analysis.
- For code vulnerability discovery: Look for evidence tied to code analysis, and define how findings will be reproduced and triaged. Anthropic describes Claude Security as scanning code and validating findings; its Opus 4.6 figure is a provider-reported research result.
- For secure code review and remediation: Check whether the workflow can explain a finding, propose a targeted change, and leave a reviewer able to inspect and test that change. Anthropic specifically describes validation and targeted patch proposals for Claude Security.
- For tool-using analysis: Evaluate what tools the model can call, what data they can access, and what actions require approval. A model’s capability label does not define the scope of your engagement or the safety of your environment.
- For threat-intelligence or incident analysis: Treat these as separate use cases. The cited vendor results do not provide a shared benchmark for them, so test against your own authorized, representative material and established analyst procedures.
- For constrained or sensitive environments: Confirm API or product eligibility, review requirements, safeguards, data-handling terms, and current availability with the provider before committing to a workflow.
What safeguards should surround AI-assisted security work?
Cybersecurity models are dual-use: methods useful for defense can also support misuse. Anthropic’s Threat Intelligence page reported on September 10, 2026, that its team had identified and disrupted operations in which threat actors tried to use Claude for malicious activity over the preceding eight months. That report concerns Claude and the operations Anthropic described; it should not be generalized to every model or threat actor. It helps explain why providers may apply access controls, monitoring, or interventions even when a user intends defensive work.

OpenAI’s API guidance says automated safeguards apply to models it classifies as having High Cybersecurity Capability and notes that legitimate security research or defensive work may occasionally be flagged while systems are calibrated. OpenAI describes Trusted Access for Cyber as a reviewed program. Approval through that program does not define the tools, environment, or engagement scope a user is authorized to operate.
For workflows that can take sensitive actions, OpenAI recommends operational controls that remain useful regardless of provider:

- Compare proposed tool calls with the approved engagement scope, and deny actions outside it.
- Pause ambiguous or high-risk changes for human approval.
- Keep filesystem and network boundaries independent of the model, and maintain audit logs.
- Fail closed if the review mechanism is unavailable.
These controls matter because defensive and offensive workflows can rely on overlapping techniques. A model response should be treated as an investigative lead: verify the issue, confirm its severity and scope, and review any proposed change before applying it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you assess a model safely before adopting it?
- Define the authorized task. Specify whether the evaluation covers code review, vulnerability validation, patch proposals, or another defensive use. Keep the scope and permitted assets explicit.
- Check access and safeguards. Confirm current product or API availability, any partner or review requirement, and how safeguards affect the workflow. Provider descriptions can change.
- Use representative material you are permitted to test. Include cases where the expected outcome is known, and assess useful findings as well as false or unsupported claims.
- Require independent validation. Reproduce findings where possible; have a qualified reviewer examine severity, evidence, and proposed remediation.
- Constrain tools and record actions. Enforce approved network and filesystem boundaries outside the model, require approval for risky actions, and retain logs.
- Decide from workflow results, not a headline figure. Compare the model’s performance on your defined task and the effort required to verify and safely use its output.
Is there a reliable cross-provider winner?
No cross-provider winner is established by the available official evidence. OpenAI’s CTF percentages, Anthropic’s reported vulnerability count, and Google’s red-teaming and bounty descriptions measure different things. None supplies a common, independently replicated comparison across the tasks a defensive team might care about. The defensible choice is therefore task-specific: select an offering whose access conditions and safeguards fit your environment, then validate its output under your own approved process.
