If you want a new Android phone for less than the current Pixel 10a’s $499 retail price, start with the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G: Engadget lists it from $200 and highlights its large 90Hz OLED screen and expandable storage. The trade-off is modest performance. If you want a stylus and faster charging, compare the Motorola Moto G Stylus (2025); if you want a larger, faster display and a distinctive design, consider the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro—but not as a sure camera upgrade over a Pixel.
What counts as the cheapest Google Pixel?
In Android Authority’s 2026 comparison, the Pixel 10a is the current retail-price benchmark at $499. The older Pixel 9a was frequently discounted to $399, so the newest A-series Pixel is not necessarily the cheapest Pixel deal on a given day. Compare the price you can actually pay for the phone you want with current Pixel offers, rather than assuming the newest model is always the lowest-cost option.
Prices below are figures reported by the cited publishers in 2026, not a live price check. Retail, sale, storage, carrier-lock, trade-in, and financing terms can change what a buyer pays; confirm the exact configuration and offer before ordering.
How the main alternatives compare
| Phone | Price reported in 2026 | What stands out | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy A17 5G | From $200, per Engadget; discounts may lower it further. Configuration and offer can affect the price. | 6.7-inch 90Hz OLED display and microSD expansion. | Engadget reports that the Exynos 1330 can struggle with multitasking and demanding apps. |
| Motorola Moto G Stylus (2025) | $399.99 retail; Android Authority reports sale prices sometimes fall below $300. | Built-in stylus, expandable storage, and 68W wired charging. | Android Authority says Pixel image processing is more reliable and reports a promise of only two major Android updates for this model. |
| Nothing Phone (4a) Pro | Not stated in the cited TechRadar guide. | 6.83-inch 144Hz OLED display and a distinctive design. | TechRadar reports inconsistent camera results and cautions that some 5G bands may not work with every US carrier. |
Best low-cost new phone: Samsung Galaxy A17 5G
The A17 is the clearest pick here when the priority is spending as little as possible on a new phone from the compared options. Engadget’s 2026 guide calls it its best cheap Android phone overall and reports a $200 starting price. Samsung US Support’s 2026 comparison describes the US-framed configuration as having a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and microSD expansion up to 2TB. Regional versions can differ, so check the exact US SKU and retailer listing.
#1 Best Overall
- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
What you get
- Engadget reports a 6.7-inch OLED screen with up to 800 nits brightness and 90Hz refresh, plus microSD support.
- The camera hardware listed by Engadget includes a 50MP main camera, 5MP ultrawide, and 2MP macro camera.
- Samsung’s comparison lists the US-framed A17 with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage, expandable by SD card up to 2TB.
Where it falls short
Engadget’s reviewer found the Exynos 1330 could struggle with multitasking and demanding apps, and also flagged the mono speaker and battery life as drawbacks. If you keep many apps open, play demanding games, or expect a camera to deliver consistently polished results with little effort, the lowest starting price may not make this the best value for you. The cited coverage does not establish an A17 update promise, so check Samsung’s current support information for the exact model rather than assuming one.
Best for a stylus and charging features: Motorola Moto G Stylus (2025)
The Moto G Stylus (2025) is a more feature-rich alternative if you will use its built-in stylus, want expandable storage, or value fast wired charging. Android Authority’s 2026 alternatives guide lists a $399.99 retail price and says sale prices sometimes dip below $300. Those sale prices are not guaranteed; compare the unlocked or carrier-specific listing and its terms with the live Pixel price.

Android Authority reports a 6.7-inch display, expandable storage, and 68W wired charging. Its guide says the phone’s battery capacity is nearly identical to the Pixel 10a’s, but that comparison alone does not establish equal real-world battery life. The same guide says Google’s image processing is more reliable and reports Motorola’s promise of two major Android updates for this model. For a phone you plan to keep for several years, that stated update commitment is an important part of the price comparison.

The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro is worth considering if display size and refresh rate, performance specifications, and design matter more to you than getting the cheapest option. TechRadar’s September 2026 US budget-phone guide lists Nothing OS 4.1 based on Android 16, a 6.83-inch 1060 × 2800 display with a 144Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, 8GB or 12GB RAM, 128GB or 256GB storage, a 5,080mAh battery, and 50W charging. The guide says the model launched in March 2026. It also reports no wireless charging.

Camera and battery caveats
TechRadar lists 50MP main, 50MP 3.5x zoom, and 8MP ultrawide rear cameras. However, its reviewer reported inconsistent exposure and pale color in some camera results, so the hardware list should not be read as evidence that it is a more dependable camera phone than a Pixel. In the guide’s single battery test, the phone fell to 56% after six hours of 2K video streaming; that is one reviewer test, not a general battery-life estimate. TechRadar also found endurance shorter than its estimate.
Check US carrier compatibility first
TechRadar cautions that some of the phone’s fast 5G bands may not work with every US carrier. Before buying, confirm that the exact US version supports your carrier’s bands and that the retailer’s return policy gives you a way to resolve connectivity problems. The available comparison does not provide a complete carrier-band matrix.

How to choose between these phones and a Pixel
- Choose the A17 if low upfront cost, a large OLED display, and microSD expansion are your priorities, and you can accept the reported performance limitations.
- Choose the Moto G Stylus if you will use its stylus, want 68W wired charging and storage expansion, and find it at a price that makes sense against the Pixel you can actually buy.
- Consider the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro if its larger 144Hz screen and design appeal to you, after checking carrier compatibility and accepting the review caveats on camera consistency and battery endurance.
- Favor a Pixel if dependable camera processing is more important than the lowest price or extra hardware features. The cited comparisons describe Pixel image processing as the safer choice.
For any model, compare the exact storage version and final checkout price, not just a starting price or headline sale. If considering an older or used budget phone to save more, Android Central advises checking how much software support remains for that specific device; age and brand alone do not tell you how long it will continue receiving updates.
