The best ad blocker depends on where you want ads removed. For iPhone Safari, use a Safari content-blocking extension; Firefox for iOS also has an optional built-in blocker. On Android, a browser-specific blocker is simpler, while a separate filtering app can cover more browsers and apps but takes a different installation route. These options have different limits, and the available official documentation does not establish a universal winner or a comparable blocking score.

Which ad blocker should you choose?

Option Where it works Scope and limitations Setup
Safari content-blocking extension Safari on iPhone, iPad or Mac, depending on the extension Blocks supported content in Safari; it does not automatically filter ads in iOS apps. You can switch an extension off for an individual website. Find extensions through Safari’s Manage Extensions flow and enable one in Settings. Apple’s iPhone guide and Safari extension overview
Firefox for iOS built-in ad blocker Firefox on iPhone and iPad, where the feature is available Optional EasyList-based blocking for many third-party ads and ad-related trackers. Some ads remain; search-result ads and sponsored Firefox Home or New Tab content are excluded. Off by default and progressively rolling out. Mozilla’s setup and limitation details
AdGuard for iOS Safari web extension Safari on iOS 15 and later Supplements the AdGuard iOS app with advanced filtering. Advanced Protection requires Premium; it is for Safari, not a promise of ad blocking throughout iOS apps. Requires the AdGuard iOS app and access to webpage content to operate. AdGuard’s iOS extension documentation
AdGuard Content Blocker Samsung Internet and Yandex Browser on Android Limited to those browsers; it cannot filter other browsers or apps. Check the product documentation for current availability. AdGuard Content Blocker overview
AdGuard Android app Broader browser and app filtering on Android Offers broader filtering than the Content Blocker, including domain-level blocking; this is not the same as a browser extension. AdGuard says the app cannot be published on Google Play and directs users to its website or other app stores; manual installation is also documented. AdGuard’s Android installation guidance
Firefox for Android extensions Firefox on Android Mozilla describes Firefox for Android as supporting ad-blocking and privacy extensions, but compatibility for each named blocker and browser version is not established here. Check the official extension store for the exact browser version. Mozilla’s extension announcement

How do I block ads on an iPhone or iPad?

Use a Safari content blocker

Apple supports Safari extensions and content-blocking extensions on iPhone and iPad. In Safari, open Manage Extensions, find an extension through the App Store, and enable it in Settings. Safari extensions can be turned off for an individual website, which is useful if a page stops working or a site asks you to disable blocking. Apple describes content blockers as able to block certain content types; this is a Safari-level choice, not system-wide filtering for other iOS apps.

There is no single extension established here as the best for every person. Before installing one, check its current App Store listing for device compatibility, available controls and privacy details. Apple reviews extensions distributed through the App Store, but that does not make every extension identical in what it blocks.

Try Firefox’s optional built-in blocker

Firefox for iOS has an optional, EasyList-based ad blocker that uses Apple’s WebKit Content Blocker technology. It is off by default, and Mozilla says the feature is being progressively rolled out, so it may not yet appear for every user. Mozilla’s support page also says remote improvements must be enabled for the feature.

  • 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.

The blocker targets many third-party ad networks, ad-related trackers, third-party website ads, pop-ups and overlays, but it does not remove every ad. Mozilla specifically excludes search-result ads and sponsored content on Firefox Home or New Tab. As Mozilla puts it, “Because websites use different advertising technologies, some ads may still appear.” See Mozilla’s current feature and limitation notes.

Add AdGuard’s Safari extension if you need its advanced filtering

AdGuard’s Safari web extension supplements the AdGuard for iOS app and works on iOS 15 and later. Advanced Protection requires Premium. AdGuard says the extension needs access to webpage content to work and says it uses that access only for ad blocking; that is the vendor’s privacy assurance, not an independent verification. Read AdGuard’s iOS documentation.

What works for ad blocking on Android?

Choose a browser-specific blocker for narrower coverage

AdGuard Content Blocker is limited to Samsung Internet and Yandex Browser. It does not filter other browsers or apps, so it is a poor fit if you expect one installation to block ads everywhere on the phone. Its narrower scope may suit someone who wants filtering in one of those supported browsers. AdGuard documents the product’s limits.

Choose broader filtering only if the installation route suits you

AdGuard’s separate Android app offers browser and app filtering, including domain-level blocking. It is distributed differently from a typical Google Play app: AdGuard says Google Play policy prevents it from publishing its full-fledged blocker there and points users to its website or other app stores, with manual installation also documented. Follow AdGuard’s current instructions for your device and source; do not assume this is a standard Play Store install. Check AdGuard’s installation options.

Firefox for Android supports ad-blocking and privacy extensions as part of Mozilla’s extension ecosystem. However, support for Firefox extensions in general does not establish that a particular blocker works with every current Firefox version or Android device. Check the official extension store for the exact add-on and browser version before relying on it. Mozilla describes its mobile extension ecosystem.

Which ad blocker works with Safari, Firefox or Chrome?

  • Safari: Apple documents Safari extensions and content blockers on its platforms. On iPhone, use Safari’s Manage Extensions flow and enable the chosen extension in Settings.
  • Firefox on iPhone: The built-in blocker is optional, off by default and not necessarily available to every user yet. Its exclusions are material if you expect every ad, including search or Firefox-sponsored content, to disappear.
  • Firefox on Android: Firefox supports extensions, but verify each blocker’s current listing and compatibility with your browser version.
  • Chrome: The official evidence available for this comparison does not establish a current blocker-by-blocker compatibility list for Chrome or Chromium browsers. Check the extension store for your browser and version rather than assuming a desktop extension works on a phone.

Browser support is not interchangeable with device support: an extension that filters pages in one browser does not necessarily affect another browser or apps.

Can a phone ad blocker block ads in apps as well as websites?

Sometimes, but it depends on the tool’s scope. Apple’s Safari extensions and Firefox for iOS’s built-in blocker are browser-level options; they should not be treated as filters for all iOS apps. On Android, AdGuard distinguishes its Content Blocker, which works only in Samsung Internet and Yandex Browser, from its separate app, which provides broader browser and app filtering. Check the specific product’s documented scope rather than relying on the label “ad blocker.”

How to choose and troubleshoot a blocker

  1. Start with your device and browser. Confirm that the tool supports your exact phone, operating system and browser version; mobile support can differ from desktop support.
  2. Decide how much you want to cover. A browser extension or built-in feature usually targets that browser. A broader Android filtering app may cover apps too, but can require installation outside Google Play.
  3. Review known exclusions. Check whether the blocker leaves search ads, sponsored content or some third-party ads visible. No option described here guarantees that every ad will be removed.
  4. Keep a recovery path for broken sites. If a page fails to load or a site’s controls stop working, pause or disable the blocker for that site where the browser or extension allows it, then reload the page.
  5. Check cost and privacy in current product materials. The documented AdGuard iOS Advanced Protection feature requires Premium. Other current prices and privacy terms are not established here, so review the relevant store listing and vendor policy before choosing.
