For clearer streaming audio, start with absorptive panels about 50 mm (2 inches) thick, check that the maker publishes absorption data, and place treatment around the reflective paths near your speaking position. Panels reduce echo inside a room; they do not soundproof it or block outside noise.
What acoustic panels can—and cannot—fix
Acoustic panels absorb some sound reflections in the room, helping speech sound less roomy or echoey in a stream. They do not isolate a room from traffic, neighbors, fans, or other outside noise. If the problem is sound entering or leaving the room, panels alone are not the solution.
Microphone choice and room treatment work together. Shure notes that “a microphone cannot improve the acoustic environment in which it is placed.” Moving a microphone closer to the speaker can increase the direct voice relative to room sound, but it does not remove the room’s reflections. See Shure’s guide to critical distance and microphone placement.
What to look for when choosing panels
Published absorption data
Compare panels using published Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) ratings or frequency-band absorption data. NRC is a useful broad comparison, but it does not show the full absorption behavior at every frequency or guarantee a particular result in your room. Check what data the seller provides and the test context, if stated.

Thickness and construction
Google’s Room Design Guide uses 50 mm (about 2 inches) as a wall-treatment thickness benchmark associated with achieving NRC 0.7 in its guidance. That is a reasonable starting point for comparing absorptive wall panels—not a guarantee or a universal streaming-room specification. Very thin decorative foam should not be assumed to address every frequency or acoustic problem. Read Google’s acoustic-finishes guidance.
Size, coverage, mounting, and finish
- Measure the available wall area and compare it with each panel’s dimensions before choosing a count.
- Check the mounting method, panel weight, and whether the wall or ceiling can support it.
- Choose fabric and color to suit a visible background, but treat appearance as separate from acoustic performance.
- Prefer a plan that lets you treat the reflections nearest the speaking position over a bundle chosen only for its panel count.
Where to put panels in a streaming room
Begin with the surfaces most likely to send speech reflections back toward the microphone. Google recommends treating adjacent walls and starting around seated head height. A panel-placement vendor also emphasizes the wall facing the microphone and nearby side walls; use that as practical vendor guidance, not a rule that overrides your room layout or microphone orientation. - Recommended Usage Scenarios: The acoustic panel is designed for sound absorption, making it perfect for reducing echo and improving acoustic quality in home studios, podcast rooms, gaming setups, office conference rooms, vocal booths, or home theaters. Not intended for full soundproofing or noise isolation from external environments.
- Identify the speaking position and microphone direction. Note which surfaces are close to the speaker and microphone, including the wall the microphone faces and nearby side walls.
- Treat the strongest nearby reflection paths first. If you can treat only one wall, prioritize the surface most likely to reflect your voice toward the microphone; the right wall depends on how you and the microphone face in the room.
- Start around seated head height. Extend treatment to adjacent walls where practical rather than placing every panel on a distant or visually convenient wall.
- Listen and adjust. Record or monitor the same spoken passage before and after treatment. If the room still sounds reflective, reassess other nearby hard surfaces and whether the treatment area is sufficient.
Google’s guide recommends total acoustic wall treatment equal to at least 50% of room floor area plus 5 m², with NRC of at least 0.7, for its room-design use case. Treat those figures as that guide’s recommendation, not as a universal streaming-room prescription or a fixed panel-count formula. Room geometry, surfaces, use, and microphone position affect what is useful.

Primacoustic’s manufacturer brochure describes its Broadway absorption panels for streaming and podcasting, but that description is not an independent comparative test: Primacoustic’s studio brochure. For a general shopping search, “2-inch acoustic panels” corresponds to the category suggested by the thickness benchmark; verify an individual panel’s specifications before buying.
Room targets need context
There is no single panel count or reverberation target established here for every streaming room. Cisco’s room-acoustics guidance gives an RT60 target of 0.3–0.4 seconds for its telepresence and meeting-room context; that figure should not be treated as a universal streamer target. See Cisco’s room-acoustics document.
