For a prerecorded program played into YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for an ordinary two-channel mix. Use AAC 5.1 at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz only when the program is genuinely mixed and correctly mapped as 5.1 and the entire ingestion path supports it. YouTube does not publish a separate audio-bitrate recommendation for prerecorded playback sent to Live; these are its general Live encoder recommendations applied to that workflow.

Recommended AAC settings for prerecorded YouTube Live playback

Choose settings based on the program’s actual mix and the way it reaches YouTube. The first two rows below are the relevant Live-ingestion recommendations; the upload row is different and applies to a standard video upload, not playback into a Live stream.

Workflow Audio codec Channel layout Sample rate YouTube-recommended audio bitrate
RTMP/RTMPS Live ingestion, ordinary prerecorded program AAC Stereo (2.0) 44.1 kHz 128 Kbps
RTMP/RTMPS Live ingestion, genuine surround program AAC 5.1 (six channels) 48 kHz 384 Kbps
HLS Live ingestion, genuine surround program AAC, AC3, or EAC3 5.1 48 kHz 384 Kbps
Standard uploaded video, not Live ingestion AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio Stereo or Stereo + 5.1 48 kHz 384 Kbps stereo; 512 Kbps 5.1

These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not evidence that choosing a higher bitrate will improve the audio delivered to viewers. The upload settings are included to distinguish a standard file upload from sending a prerecorded file through a Live encoder.

Choose stereo or 5.1 based on the mix

Use stereo for a normal two-channel program

For music, talk, or other content mixed for two channels, send a conventional stereo pair. A file containing extra tracks or channels does not automatically make the program a valid 5.1 mix. Do not send an arbitrary multichannel layout and assume YouTube will preserve or downmix it correctly: YouTube supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 Live input, and warns that other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo.

Use 5.1 only when the full chain supports it

YouTube defines 5.1 as front left, center, front right, surround left, surround right, plus a low-frequency-effects channel. Keep that assignment intact in the source, playout system, and encoder. The applicable Live recommendation is AAC at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz. For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube supports 5.1 only with AAC. HLS has additional 5.1 codec options—AAC, AC3, and EAC3—but the setting in this article is AAC.

YouTube’s 5.1 guidance says automatic detection and production rely on a stream key created with manual resolution settings turned off. Check the current Live Control Room instructions when setting up a key; configuration labels and availability can change. YouTube names OBS and Videon EdgeCaster among compatible encoders for Live 5.1, but that compatibility list is not an endorsement or a guarantee for every setup.

Set up and test the prerecorded Live audio

  1. Confirm the workflow. If the finished file will be played through an encoder into a Live stream, use the Live-ingestion row in the table. If you are uploading it as a regular YouTube video, use the upload row instead.
  2. Verify the source mix and channel map. Use stereo for an ordinary two-channel program. Select 5.1 only if the mix and channel assignment are genuinely 5.1 from source through playout.
  3. Configure AAC in the encoder. For stereo Live playback, set 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For actual 5.1 Live playback, set 384 Kbps and 48 kHz.
  4. Check protocol and stream-key configuration for 5.1. RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 requires AAC. For YouTube’s automatic 5.1 detection and production, create the stream key with manual resolution settings turned off.
  5. Test a representative stream before relying on it. Include audio and motion, then inspect Live stream health. YouTube’s API health messages can warn about unsupported codecs, excessive audio bitrate, and unsupported channel counts. A setting recommendation alone does not confirm that a particular encoder, channel map, or playout chain works.

Troubleshoot common audio-setting problems

  • YouTube reports an unsupported codec: Check the encoder’s audio codec against the selected workflow. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC.
  • YouTube reports excessive audio bitrate: Verify that the encoder is set to the Live recommendation for the channel layout—128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1—and not the higher standard-upload figure.
  • YouTube reports an unsupported channel count or stereo conversion sounds wrong: Confirm that the input is mono, stereo, or a correctly mapped 5.1 mix. Other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo.
  • A 5.1 stream is not detected or produced as expected: Check the six-channel assignment, the encoder and protocol support, and whether the stream key was created with manual resolution settings turned off.
  • The file’s upload settings differ from the Live settings: That is expected. A standard upload uses separate recommendations; do not apply its 48 kHz and upload bitrate figures automatically to Live ingestion.
