The Insta360 X5 is the clearest documented choice for 360-degree live streaming: Insta360 describes both app-based 360 Live and Reframe Live workflows, and separately documents a wired webcam workflow through OBS. The X4 is also listed for the app workflows. RICOH THETA X is a possible alternative for wireless RTMP/RTMPS streaming, but the available official information does not establish a comparably complete setup. These are documentation-based recommendations, not results of comparative hands-on testing.
How to choose a 360 camera for live streaming
Start with the live workflow you need, not the camera’s maximum recording resolution. A camera may record at a high resolution without delivering a live stream at that resolution. Before buying, establish how the camera connects, what the audience will see, which destinations are supported, and whether the manufacturer specifies live output resolution, frame rate, runtime, power, and audio details.
- Workflow: phone app, wireless RTMP/RTMPS, or wired webcam into a computer and OBS.
- Output: interactive spherical 360 video or a conventional flat composition reframed from the 360 view.
- Destination: verify support for your exact platform and camera model.
- Operational limits: check current app and firmware requirements, network needs, power arrangements, and thermal guidance.
- Audio and duration: look for model-specific live-stream details rather than assuming recording specifications apply.
The available documentation does not provide a controlled comparison of these cameras’ live image quality, latency, sustained runtime, or audio quality, so those points should not be treated as a proven ranking.

Insta360’s X5 live-stream tutorial describes two app-based modes: 360 Live, for a spherical viewing experience, and Reframe Live, for a conventional flat view. The tutorial lists YouTube, Facebook, Kwai, and RTMP as supported destinations for those modes. It also lists the X4, making that model a documented alternative for the same app-based paths.

App-based streaming
The app workflow depends on a supported Insta360 app and camera firmware combination, platform account authorization, and an active connection. Version requirements can change, so check the current X5 tutorial and manual for the exact versions before setup. The phone app must remain in the foreground; Insta360’s support instructions say, “During the live stream, please keep the app running in the foreground.”
Choose 360 Live when viewers should be able to explore the spherical scene, and Reframe Live when you want to present a selected, conventional composition. Do not assume every platform handles or displays a 360 stream in the same way; confirm the intended destination’s current support for the format.
Wired webcam streaming through OBS
Insta360 also documents connecting the X5 by wire as a webcam and using third-party software such as OBS. Its X5 OBS guide specifies 2880×1440 at 30 fps for 2:1 panoramic webcam output. This is a webcam/live setting, not the camera’s maximum recording resolution and not a promise of 8K live output.

The X5 product specification lists 8K 360 recording, but recording and live output are different modes. Insta360’s general FAQ also says its 360 cameras do not support HDMI output for live streaming; the documented computer route here is a wired webcam connection, not HDMI.
2. Insta360 X4: a supported app-workflow alternative
Insta360’s X5 tutorial also names the X4 for app-based 360 Live and Reframe Live. That makes it a supported option in the available documentation, but current X4 pricing, stock, and value against the X5 are not established here. Verify the current app and firmware requirements for the exact camera before choosing it.
3. RICOH THETA X: consider for wireless RTMP/RTMPS
Ricoh’s archived THETA X specification lists H.264 live-stream video and linear PCM audio. Ricoh also describes a THETA plug-in that can connect over Wi-Fi and stream 4K or 2K video using RTMP/RTMPS to YouTube, Facebook, and similar sites. This makes the THETA X worth considering if a wireless RTMP workflow is important.

Those broad format and protocol details do not establish a complete current THETA X setup or a full camera-by-platform matrix. Exact platform support, live resolution and frame rate for the intended configuration, streaming duration, and setup steps should be confirmed in current Ricoh documentation. Ricoh warns that elevated camera temperature can stop shooting automatically.

What about Insta360 X6?
Do not buy the X6 on the assumption that its current firmware supports live streaming. Insta360’s general live FAQ says X6 does not currently support app live streaming, while an X6-specific tutorial describes 360 and flat modes but says live-stream functionality will be supported in subsequent firmware updates. These official statements conflict, and the available information does not resolve the conflict for a specific current firmware version. Confirm directly against current firmware notes or support documentation before treating X6 live streaming as available.

Setup checks before going live
- Confirm the mode and audience experience: decide whether viewers need an interactive 360 scene or a reframed flat image.
- Verify destination support: check current documentation for your exact camera, app or plug-in, and streaming platform.
- Check versions: install the supported app and camera firmware specified in the current manufacturer instructions.
- Test authorization and connectivity: complete platform authorization and confirm the camera-to-phone or camera-to-computer connection before the scheduled stream.
- Plan for power and heat: review the manufacturer’s guidance for the intended duration and conditions. The available materials do not establish comparable battery runtime across these models.
- Check audio separately: do not assume that a camera’s recording audio specification proves which live audio inputs or controls work in a particular setup.
- Respect platform and rights rules: make sure you have permission for all video, music, and other material in the broadcast, and follow the destination’s live-stream policies.
Common problems and what to check
The app stream will not start
Check that the camera model, app version, and firmware meet the current tutorial’s requirements; confirm the destination account is authorized and the connection is active. On the X5 app workflow, keep the app in the foreground during the stream.

The stream looks flat instead of immersive
Check whether you selected Reframe Live rather than 360 Live, then verify that the destination and viewing method support the intended spherical presentation. A 360-capable camera does not by itself guarantee an interactive 360 experience at every destination.
OBS does not show the expected panoramic output
Confirm that the camera is connected using the documented wired webcam workflow and that OBS is set to 2880×1440 at 30 fps for the X5’s 2:1 panoramic output. Do not substitute the X5’s 8K recording figure for this live webcam setting, and do not expect HDMI live output from Insta360’s 360 cameras.

Check the camera’s temperature and operating conditions. Ricoh warns that elevated temperature can stop shooting automatically; the available documentation does not establish a universal live-stream duration.
You are considering X6 because a tutorial shows live modes
Resolve the conflict between Insta360’s general FAQ and X6 tutorial for the exact firmware you plan to use. Until current official guidance confirms support, treat X6 live streaming as unverified.
