Video advertising can help a small business show what it sells, explain how it works, introduce the people behind it, and invite potential customers to take a next step. It can support awareness, consideration, leads, or sales—but the format alone does not guarantee results. The benefit depends on the message, audience, campaign objective, and whether you can measure an outcome that matters to the business.
What benefits can video advertising offer small businesses?
Video gives a business a way to demonstrate or explain an offer in motion and sound. A shop might show a product being used; a contractor could explain a service; a local café could introduce its menu and team. These are creative options, not guaranteed performance outcomes.
Depending on the campaign, video can be used to:
- Build awareness: introduce a business or product to people who may not know it exists.
- Support consideration: explain how an offering works, show relevant details, or address a common customer question.
- Encourage action: ask viewers to book, enquire, visit, or buy when the offer and campaign objective make that next step appropriate.
Google describes YouTube campaigns as serving different stages of the funnel, but its findings do not prove that every small business needs a full-funnel campaign or that one approach will outperform another in every market. See Google’s full-funnel discussion.

Why the video itself does not determine the result
Video is a format, not a business outcome. In a June 2022 Think with Google article, Rodrigo Carone, Google’s Director of Video Measurement Solutions, summarized four levers: “Our research shows that there are four primary levers of video ROI: creative, ad format mix, reach and frequency, and audience.” That is a platform representative’s summary, not a guarantee or a universal rule for every advertising platform or local market. The article also cites Nielsen Catalina Solutions’ 2017 U.S. finding that effective creative accounts for almost 50% of ROI; that is an attributed research result, not a small-business-specific estimate. For a small business, those levers translate into practical questions:
- Creative: Is the offer understandable early? Does the video show or explain something useful? Is the next step clear?
- Format mix: Does the chosen ad format fit the objective and how viewers will encounter it?
- Reach and frequency: Is the campaign reaching enough of the intended audience without repeatedly spending on people unlikely to become customers?
- Audience: Can the campaign reach people in the business’s actual service area or likely buyer group?
Platform examples and findings can guide questions to test, but they are not apples-to-apples evidence for ranking platforms by cost or return. The material available here does not establish a current, comparable cost benchmark across video-ad platforms.

Use a creative checklist, then test the message
Google’s ABCD framework stands for Attention, Branding, Connection, and Direction: earn attention, make the brand clear, connect with viewers, and give them direction. Treat it as a creative checklist rather than a promise of results. Google Ads Help cites Google/Kantar research from April 2021 reporting that ABCD-aligned ads could deliver as much as a 30% lift in short-term sales likelihood and a 17% lift in long-term brand contribution. Those are study-based findings, not forecasts for an individual small business. Google’s ABCD guidance.

Apply the checklist by making a few versions of a relevant message: try different openings, a product demonstration, an explanation of a common customer problem, or a different call to action. Compare versions against the same business objective rather than treating views alone as success.

Choose an objective and measure a business result
Before spending on distribution, decide what the campaign is supposed to do. A primary outcome might be qualified enquiries, booked appointments, sales, or store visits where these can be measured. Match the call to action to that objective and make sure someone can respond to resulting leads.
- Set one primary outcome. Define what counts—for example, a qualified enquiry rather than any form submission.
- Record costs and results consistently. Track ad spend and the outcome using the same attribution approach throughout the comparison.
- Compare like with like. Differences in audience, campaign objective, attribution window, or time period can make a simple before-and-after comparison misleading.
- Test one important change at a time when practical. Compare a new opening or audience against an appropriate baseline instead of changing everything at once.
There is no established universal ROI, test budget, or campaign duration for small-business video advertising in the evidence cited here. Google’s June 2022 article reports a 10% higher ROI for a full-funnel YouTube strategy compared with awareness advertising alone, based on a Google-commissioned Nielsen meta-analysis of 21 U.S. consumer packaged goods brands from 2018–2020. That result should not be treated as a forecast for a local service business. The same article cites Google internal U.S. data for 56,000 active advertisers whose multitouch conversion paths included video from August to October 2021: awareness formats drove 28% of conversion assists. An assist is not the same as a sale caused solely by that ad. Google’s article and study context.

What survey figures can—and cannot—tell you
A June 2022 Google article reported that 75% of surveyed people said advertising in YouTube videos made them more aware of new brands or products, and 70% said they had bought a brand as a result of seeing it on YouTube. These are survey responses cited by Google, not conversion rates for a small business’s campaign. Use them as evidence about reported viewer perceptions, not as a prediction of sales. Make a simple video without buying a production kit
A clear message matters more than owning specialized equipment. LinkedIn’s guide to lower-cost B2B video production names a smartphone mini tripod, a simple lavalier microphone, an LED light, and a remote shutter release as possible aids. These are optional: a stable surface can substitute for a tripod, available daylight may be enough, and a microphone is most useful when intelligible speech matters. Gear cannot guarantee an effective advertisement. LinkedIn’s DIY video-ad guide.
Start with a concise plan: identify the customer, state the offer, show or explain the useful detail, and decide what the viewer should do next. Make sure the video is understandable with the sound off if viewers may encounter it muted, and check spoken audio and text for clarity before using it. These are production considerations, not claims that any particular style will perform best.
Decide whether video advertising fits your business
Consider video when seeing a product, process, place, or person would help explain the offer. A straightforward service may still be better communicated with a simple explanation than with an elaborate production. Weigh the work involved in making and adapting creative, the media spend, the ability to reach likely buyers, and the time needed to follow up on enquiries. Choose a platform based on your audience, objective, creative fit, and measurement—not an unsupported universal ranking of platform costs or returns.
