Live streaming a church service can make worship easier to access when distance, illness, disability, travel, or scheduling gets in the way. It can also help people stay connected to a congregation or discover services beyond their local area. The strongest case for a stream is as an additional way to participate—not a promise that watching online will feel the same as gathering in person.

How live streaming helps people access worship

Convenience and continuity

In a Pew Research Center survey conducted in November 2022 and reported in 2023, 27% of U.S. adults said they regularly watched religious services online or on TV. Among those regular virtual viewers, 43% said convenience was a major reason, while another 31% called it a minor reason. Taken together, 74% named convenience as a major or minor reason; respondents could select multiple reasons, so the categories are not mutually exclusive. Pew Research Center

A stream can also help someone keep up with a congregation when work, travel, caregiving, or a temporary change in routine makes a Sunday visit difficult. It may preserve a thread of connection during a short-term absence, though watching alone does not provide all the relationships and shared practices of in-person worship.

Reach beyond the local area

Among regular U.S. virtual viewers in Pew’s survey, 34% said access to services held far from home was a major reason for watching; 60% named it as a major or minor reason. This can matter to people who have moved away, are visiting another place, or want to hear a service from a congregation beyond their immediate community. The figures describe U.S. survey respondents, not a worldwide estimate.

Access when attending in person is difficult

In the same Pew survey, illness or disability was a major reason for watching online or on TV for 16% of regular virtual viewers. Church of Scotland guidance describes individual examples: a member with failing eyesight who appreciated being able to watch a baptism, and around 30 nursing-home residents who worshipped through an internet stream with help from an activities coordinator. These examples illustrate possible uses; they are not a measured estimate of how many people benefit. Church of Scotland online worship guidance

For a viewer who cannot travel, a stream may be a meaningful route into worship. Churches should still consider whether the video, sound, captions or other access arrangements work for the people they hope to reach; a stream alone does not guarantee accessibility.

Can online worship provide the same sense of connection?

Not necessarily. Pew’s November 2022 U.S. survey found that 65% of regular in-person attenders felt a great deal or quite a bit of connection with other people attending in person. Among regular virtual viewers, 28% reported that level of connection with people attending the service in person, and 22% with other people watching virtually. Only 25% of regular virtual viewers said they felt like active participants.

Those results are a reason to describe streaming as an additional route to worship and contact, rather than a replacement that works equally well for everyone. Viewers’ experiences differ: about half of regular virtual viewers said they usually watched alone, while 39% said they often did things they would do in person, such as pray aloud, sing, or kneel. A stream can support meaningful participation for some people, but simply making a service available online does not ensure interaction or belonging.

Some churches may complement a broadcast with ways to connect before or after the service, or with follow-up for people who want contact. These are practical choices, not outcomes established by the survey figures.

What churches can learn from adoption and adaptation

During England’s March–July 2020 lockdown, more than 9,000 Church of England churches (78%) offered “Church at Home” through online, email, post, or telephone. More than 8,000 (69%) offered livestreamed or prerecorded services. The Church of England also reported that 7,000 people received training in digital communications, live streaming, and online communities in 2020—seven times the previous year’s figure. These figures show how churches in England adapted during an exceptional lockdown period; they do not establish current adoption across churches everywhere or prove that online services caused attendance or membership growth. Church of England report on digital offerings

The Church of England report attributes this reflection to Dr Ken Eames of its Research and Statistics Unit: “It would have been fascinating to have asked people early in 2020 whether they thought the Church of England would be able to switch at a moment’s notice to worshipping online and in other innovative ways; my guess is that the Church of England massively exceeded expectations.”

A repository abstract for a study of rural Episcopal Church members describes perceived benefits including convenience and accessibility, access to other congregations’ services, connections with other communities, and opportunities for faith development. The abstract says the Covid-19 & Church-21 Survey drew responses from 4,536 Episcopal Church members, but it does not establish that all respondents were rural or give prevalence estimates for those themes. Live, prerecorded, or audio: choose a format that fits

Live video is not the only way to provide remote worship. Church of Scotland guidance distinguishes live streaming from prerecorded video and audio, and notes that live streaming generally has higher technical demands, particularly for bandwidth and processing power. A live broadcast offers the service as it happens; prerecorded material can be prepared in advance; audio can be a simpler way to make spoken worship available. The right format depends on what the congregation can reliably produce and what remote participants need.

  • Live stream: useful when people want to follow a service at the same time as the congregation, but it needs reliable production and monitoring.
  • Prerecorded service: allows recording and review before release, but viewers watch on their own schedule rather than joining a live event.
  • Audio or other remote options: may be easier to produce or access in some circumstances; consider how listeners will receive materials and whether they need a way to respond or connect.

What a church should plan before streaming

Live streaming has more technical demands than simpler options. Church of Scotland guidance says it will often require someone other than the worship leader to produce and monitor the stream. Before committing to a regular schedule, consider:

  • Internet reliability: check that the connection can sustain the stream from the place where the service will be produced.
  • Sound and camera coverage: plan how remote viewers will hear speech, music, and other important parts of the service, and what the camera needs to show.
  • People and roles: identify who will operate and monitor the stream while worship is underway, and how the church will handle interruptions.
  • Viewer access: tell people how to find the service and consider an alternative way to receive worship if the video is unavailable or difficult to use.
  • Ongoing capacity: choose a format the church can maintain with its available volunteers, equipment, and technical resources.

These are practical planning considerations, not results from a controlled equipment trial. A camera can be part of a setup, but the guidance does not establish that a particular model—or even a dedicated camera—is required. The appropriate equipment depends on the space, audio arrangement, network, and available volunteers.
