To benchmark a Windows gaming PC, choose a tool based on the question you want answered: use the 3DMark demo for a repeatable synthetic score, CapFrameX to analyze a real gameplay session, or Intel PresentMon to capture frame-level performance telemetry. These are different kinds of measurement, not interchangeable scores.
Which benchmark tool should you use?

For broad comparison, start with 3DMark. For evidence about how a particular game runs on your PC, capture that game with CapFrameX or PresentMon. CapFrameX emphasizes reviewing and comparing captures; PresentMon offers a direct capture framework with GUI, service, and console components.
How to benchmark your PC with these tools
1. Get a repeatable baseline with the 3DMark demo
- Download the demo from the official 3DMark site. Check which tests the demo makes available; do not assume it includes the complete paid suite.
- Run an available test and save its result. Record the test name and any relevant system or graphics settings so you can identify the workload later.
- Compare the score with systems using similar hardware. A low score is a reason to investigate cooling, configuration, or component behavior—not proof that a particular part is defective.
A synthetic workload gives you a more controlled comparison than an ordinary game session, but it cannot answer how every title will perform at your chosen resolution and graphics settings.

2. Record a real game session with CapFrameX
- Install CapFrameX from its project page, and ensure the required .NET 10 Desktop Runtime x64 is installed.
- Before capturing, close or disable other FPS and frametime monitors that could overlap with CapFrameX’s capture service.
- Choose a repeatable scene or route in the game. Record the resolution, graphics settings, driver, and other conditions that could affect performance.
- Capture the session, then inspect FPS alongside frametimes, percentiles, stuttering analysis, and any recorded sensor data. Save the capture so you can compare it with a later run.
This approach answers a practical question a synthetic score cannot: how consistently does your PC deliver frames in the game and scenario you actually play?

3. Capture frame telemetry with PresentMon
- Get PresentMon from the official repository and choose the project component that fits your workflow: GUI, service, or console capture.
- Capture the graphics application or game you want to examine. The project describes support for DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan, and its capture app can write per-frame CSV data.
- Review frame durations and latency, keeping in mind that OpenGL and Vulkan instrumentation may be less complete in some cases and GPU execution metrics may be less accurate when Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling is enabled.
How to make results useful
Keep comparisons like for like
When checking whether a driver update or settings change helped, keep the game scene, resolution, graphics settings, driver, and background workload consistent. Record the exact scenario and repeat the runs; if results vary substantially, a single run is not a reliable basis for a conclusion.
Look beyond average FPS
Average FPS summarizes performance but can conceal uneven frame delivery. Frametime graphs, percentiles, and stuttering analysis in CapFrameX, or frame-duration and latency data in PresentMon, can reveal problems an average alone misses.

Interpret a low result as a clue
A score below comparable systems does not identify a faulty component by itself. Use it to investigate possible differences in cooling, configuration, or hardware, and check whether the comparison uses similar components and the same test.

Which one should you start with?
- Choose the 3DMark demo if you want a repeatable synthetic score for comparison with similar hardware.
- Choose CapFrameX if you want an accessible way to record and analyze a real game session, including frametimes and stuttering.
- Choose PresentMon if you want direct frame telemetry or CSV capture and are comfortable selecting among its capture components.
