Most buyers can narrow the choice with three questions: how much you want health tracking, whether you plan to swim or do water sports, and how much you want to spend. As of early October 2026, Apple’s lineup has three current models: Apple Watch SE 3, Apple Watch Series 12, and Apple Watch Ultra 4. In short, SE 3 is Apple’s pick for essential features and value, Series 12 is positioned around health, and Ultra 4 is built for sports and adventure, with the highest water rating in the range. Apple’s descriptions are its own positioning, not independent test results, so use them as a starting point and confirm the details on the specification pages before you buy.
The current Apple Watch lineup at a glance
The table below uses Apple’s stated focus and water ratings for each model. Case sizes, materials, and GPS or GPS + Cellular options vary by configuration, so Apple’s comparison page is the place to confirm them for the exact model you are considering.
| Model | Apple’s stated focus | Water rating and activities (per Apple) | Case sizes, materials, connectivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | Essential features and value | 50-meter water resistance for shallow-water activities such as pool or ocean swimming. Snorkeling: not stated for this model. | Check Apple’s comparison page |
| Apple Watch Series 12 | Health | 50-meter water resistance for shallow-water activities. Snorkeling to 6 meters is listed on Apple’s comparison page for Series 10 and later. | Check Apple’s comparison page |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Sports and adventure | 100-meter water resistance. Recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with a compatible third-party App Store app, and high-speed water sports. Apple says it should not be used below 40 meters. Snorkeling: not separately stated. | Check Apple’s comparison page |
Do not treat “Series” or “Ultra” as a single product. Apple lists several configurations within each family, and a Series 12 with GPS and a Series 12 with GPS + Cellular are different purchases with different connectivity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich tier fits your situation
- Choose SE 3 if you want core Apple Watch features, you are not chasing advanced health tracking, and you want to keep the purchase price in check. It still carries the 50-meter shallow-water rating.
- Choose Series 12 if health and daily wellness tracking are your main reasons for buying. It shares the 50-meter shallow-water rating and adds the snorkeling depth Apple lists for the Series 10 generation and later.
- Choose Ultra 4 if you train outdoors, hike, or want a watch for water sports and recreational diving. It has the highest water rating in the lineup, but it is designed around sports and adventure, so it is a poorer fit if you only want a light everyday watch.
GPS or GPS + Cellular?
GPS models use your iPhone for calls, messages, and most data, and they track location through GPS. A GPS + Cellular model can connect to a mobile network directly, which matters when your iPhone is out of range, such as on a run without your phone. Cellular use depends on a carrier plan that supports Apple Watch in your country, and carrier requirements differ, so confirm them with your carrier before you pay for the cellular version. Apple’s comparison page lists which configurations include cellular for each model.

Can you swim with an Apple Watch?
Yes, for the activities Apple names, but water resistance is not the same as waterproofing. Apple Support’s guidance on water resistance puts it plainly: “Your Apple Watch is water resistant, but not waterproof.” Water resistance is also not permanent, and Apple notes it can diminish over time, so a watch that has been dropped, cracked, or worn for years should not be trusted in water without checking its condition.
Shallow-water swimming
Apple states that Series 2 and later and SE and later have a 50-meter rating for shallow-water activities such as pool or ocean swimming. This covers SE 3, Series 12, and Ultra 4. Rinse the watch with fresh water after swimming in chlorinated or salt water, and dry it before charging.

Snorkeling
Apple’s comparison page lists snorkeling to 6 meters for Series 10 and later, which includes Series 12. For SE 3, snorkeling is not stated on the comparison information reviewed for this guide, so do not assume it is supported.
Scuba diving and high-speed water sports
Ultra models have a 100-meter rating. Apple says they can be used for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with a compatible third-party App Store app, and for high-speed water sports. Apple says Ultra should not be used below 40 meters. Diving with any watch carries decompression and safety considerations that a wrist computer does not replace, so treat the rating as a limit, not a plan.

Water-resistant watch, but not every band
A band’s water suitability can differ from the watch’s. Apple lists leather and several other band types as not water resistant. Before you swim or sweat heavily in a band, check its material on Apple’s band guidance and the care instructions for that band. A water-rated watch on a leather band is not a water-rated setup.

Apple’s models guide describes Blood Oxygen features. For certain U.S.-purchased watches with specified part-number endings bought on or after January 18, 2024, Blood Oxygen data analysis is performed on iPhone and results appear in Health. Check the part-number endings in Apple’s guide against your box or the watch’s settings, because the rule applies only to those configurations.

Compatibility checks before you buy
- Confirm the exact model and configuration (case size, material, GPS or GPS + Cellular) on Apple’s comparison page.
- Check that the watch is supported by your iPhone and the current watchOS. Apple’s models guide lists watchOS 27-compatible models, and setup requirements for each Watch are on Apple’s pages. This guide does not reproduce a complete minimum iPhone or iOS table, so check the current requirements before ordering.
- Check feature availability for your country. Some features, including health features, depend on region and purchase date.
- If you plan a cellular model, confirm with your carrier that it supports Apple Watch on your plan.
- Check the price and stock at the retailer you use on the day you buy. No retailer price or stock level was verified for this guide.
Apple Fitness+ and guided workouts
Apple describes Fitness+ as a Watch-connected experience that shows real-time metrics during guided workouts. It may suit readers who want structured sessions rather than tracking alone. Regional availability and current subscription terms vary, so confirm them with Apple before you count on the service.
What this guide does not cover
Battery life is not compared here. Apple publishes battery-test conditions on its comparison pages, but battery figures depend on model, configuration, and usage, so compare them on Apple’s live specifications rather than across models. Third-party reviews and owner satisfaction are also outside the scope of this guide.
