Use Behat to describe and run user-facing behavior, and PhpSpec to specify how individual PHP objects should behave. They complement—not replace—Laravel’s documented Pest/PHPUnit workflow. The key to behavior-driven development (BDD) is agreeing on concrete examples with the people who understand the desired behavior; installing tools comes afterward.
What BDD means in a Laravel project
BDD is a collaborative, example-driven way to clarify what software should do. Developers and stakeholders discuss concrete examples, then use those examples to guide implementation and check whether the expected behavior holds. It is a practice, not a particular framework or a requirement to adopt a specific testing library.
In a Laravel project, that distinction matters: Laravel documents testing with Pest and PHPUnit, while Behat and PhpSpec offer other ways to express behavior at different levels. Choose a tool because it makes a particular expectation clearer, not simply because a project uses Laravel.
What is the difference between Behat and PhpSpec?
| Dimension | Behat | PhpSpec |
|---|---|---|
| Specification level | Feature or story behavior that users or stakeholders can understand | Behavior of an object or class |
| Main artifact | Gherkin feature and scenario text, connected to PHP context steps | PHP specification examples, commonly methods named it_ or its_ |
| Primary purpose | Make business expectations explicit and executable | Guide object design through small implementation steps and refactoring |
| Laravel relationship | Framework-agnostic; the project must choose how a context exercises the application | Object-level PHP tool; Composer autoloading must make project classes discoverable |
Behat’s Gherkin scenarios are readable descriptions of a feature. Behat executes them by connecting each step to code in a PHP context class. PhpSpec addresses a narrower question: what should this object do, and what is the simplest implementation that satisfies that specification? Its documentation distinguishes this object-level work from the story-level purpose of tools such as Behat.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The two can work together: a Behat scenario can describe an end-to-end expectation, while a PhpSpec example helps shape one object involved in meeting it. Neither needs to cover every path in the application.
How do I use Behat with Laravel?
Start with a small behavior that matters to a user, then decide what boundary the scenario should exercise. Behat supports framework-neutral projects and different ways to interact with an application, including browser automation, HTTP calls, shell commands, or direct communication with application components. The right choice depends on what the scenario is meant to prove.

Behat’s official quick start shows the general Composer and initialization flow below. These are Behat project commands, not a Laravel-specific bootstrap recipe:
- Agree on an example. Describe one user-facing outcome in concrete terms. For instance, specify what a user should see after submitting valid information; define the expected result with the team rather than treating a tool-generated template as the requirement.
- Add Behat as a development dependency. The quick start uses Composer to add Behat to the project’s development dependencies. Check the package constraints against the PHP and project versions before installing.
- Initialize the Behat structure. Run
vendor/bin/behat --init. Behat creates a feature structure, including the place for feature files and a context class. - Write a feature and scenario. Put the agreed behavior into Gherkin feature and scenario text. Keep it focused on observable outcomes rather than implementation details.
- Implement the step definitions. Connect the scenario’s steps to deliberate PHP code in the context. Behat can show snippets for undefined steps, but those snippets are scaffolding: they do not decide how the Laravel application should be exercised or what the step should assert.
- Run the scenarios. Execute
vendor/bin/behatand use failures to find missing or incorrect step behavior. - Choose the application boundary. Connect the context to the Laravel app using the approach appropriate to the scenario. For example, an HTTP-level interaction is relevant when the behavior under test is an endpoint response; another boundary may be more suitable for a different user-facing flow.
The Behat documentation describes framework-agnostic use and several integration approaches, but the official materials reviewed here do not prescribe one canonical Laravel-specific bootstrap, service-container setup, or browser-driver configuration. Confirm the current extension or bootstrap approach for your chosen boundary before copying integration code; a generic Behat quick start does not configure Laravel automatically.

Where PhpSpec fits
After identifying a domain object involved in the feature, use PhpSpec to express its behavior in focused examples. The typical cycle is to describe the behavior, implement enough to satisfy the specification, and refactor. This is object-level design work, not a second copy of every Behat scenario.
- Choose a small class or responsibility that contributes to the feature.
- Write a PhpSpec example describing the behavior that object should have.
- Implement the smallest change that satisfies the example, then refactor while keeping the specification passing.
- If PhpSpec cannot discover project classes, check the project’s Composer autoload configuration.
The PhpSpec installation and introduction documentation is labelled stable/5.x. Verify its Composer and PHP compatibility requirements for the target project rather than assuming they apply to every Laravel or PHP version.

Do I need Behat if Laravel already has PHPUnit tests?
No. Laravel documents a native testing workflow using Pest and PHPUnit, run through php artisan test. Its testing guidance distinguishes unit tests from feature tests; feature tests can cover interactions among objects or an HTTP request to a JSON endpoint. Behat is an optional behavior-specification layer, not a Laravel-mandated replacement for those tools.
Use the clearest mechanism for each test’s purpose. A team may value Behat when readable, shared examples help stakeholders and developers agree on acceptance behavior. It may use Laravel’s native tests for framework-integrated checks, and PhpSpec when object-level examples help guide class design. Avoid duplicating every assertion at every level: repetition adds upkeep without necessarily clarifying another expectation.

Check versions before adopting the examples
Laravel documentation is versioned, and commands or guidance should be checked against the application’s actual major version. The current documentation surfaced for this topic includes Laravel 13 HTTP testing material and versioned Laravel 12 testing documentation; the Laravel 11 testing page labels itself old and recommends upgrading. Do not infer that one page’s instructions automatically fit every project.
Before adding dependencies, check the project’s Composer constraints for PHP, Laravel, Behat, and PhpSpec together. In particular, PhpSpec’s cited documentation is for stable/5.x, while Behat’s project-level setup does not itself settle Laravel integration details.
