The quickest way to check a headset’s remaining charge is to look at the phone or computer it is connected to. If that shows nothing, the manufacturer’s companion app, the headset’s own spoken prompt, or its indicator lights can usually give you a reading. Which of these works depends on your exact headset model and your operating system, so treat the steps below as a sequence of options to try in order, not a single menu path that applies to every device.
Check the connected device first
Turn the headset on and connect it to the device you normally use with it. Then open that device’s Bluetooth or accessory battery controls and look for a battery reading next to the headset’s name. Whether a reading appears at all depends on the headset, the platform, and the connection mode, so a missing number does not mean the battery is empty.
Platform examples from manufacturer documentation show how much this varies:
- Sony ULT WEAR: Sony documents a remaining-charge icon for an iPhone or iPod touch connected over HFP, a battery widget on iOS 11 or later, and a Bluetooth settings display on Android 8.1 or later.
- Huawei earbuds: Huawei describes checking supported earbuds from the Bluetooth status area on Android (EMUI) or from Control Center on iOS. Huawei’s wording covers earbuds, not every headset.
Step-by-step checking sequence
- Connect and read the paired device. Turn the headset on, connect it to your phone or computer, and open the Bluetooth or battery controls for that device. Look for an accessory charge reading. Menu names change between operating system versions, so if you cannot find the entry, search the settings for “battery” and the headset’s name.
- Open the maker’s companion app. If the device shows no level, install the official app for your exact model. Examples named in manufacturer documentation include:
- Microsoft Accessory Center for the Microsoft Modern Wireless Headset, on Windows 10 or Windows 11 (Microsoft notes that you can check the battery level “anytime in the Microsoft Accessory Center app on your PC”).
- HP Poly Studio for supported HP headsets.
- Plantronics Hub for the Dell WL7022, on iOS or Android, or on Windows or Mac.
- Sony Headphones Connect for supported Sony models.
- The Audeze HQ app for the Audeze Penrose, on Windows or Mac.
- Use the headset’s own voice prompt or lights. Power the headset on and listen for a spoken battery message, or watch the indicator LEDs, then compare them with the model guide. Microsoft says the Modern Wireless Headset announces its remaining charge at power-on. HP describes voice alerts and LEDs at power-on. Philips documents voice prompts and LEDs for the SHB4385BK/00 and SHB4385BK/27.
- Confirm the connection supports reporting. If there is still no level, check that the headset is connected in a mode that reports battery data. Audeze says Bluetooth battery reporting varies by device and platform, and that, to its knowledge, most consoles do not show a headset battery level. If that is your situation, the headset’s own prompt or lights are the more likely source of a reading.
- Consult the exact model guide. If a reading is missing or looks wrong, find the support page for your precise model number and follow its instructions for that model and your operating system.
How to interpret the reading
Battery information comes in three forms, and they are not interchangeable:
#1 Best Overall
- Crystal-Clear Calls with ANC & ENC—Our noise cancelling headset features advanced Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to block out background noise for your focus(press ANC button, enjoy 3 modes), wireless headset with mic combined with Environmental Noise Cancellation (ENC) through the microphone to ensure your voice comes through clearly—even in noisy offices or busy homes. Be perfectly heard on every Zoom, Teams, or customer call
- Plug-and-Play Qualcomm USB Dongle for PC/Mac Use—Headsets with microphone for work come with a dedicated Qualcomm USB-A dongle, providing a more stable, low-latency connection than standard Bluetooth. Work headset with mic is the perfect solution for computers without built-in Bluetooth or with restricted settings. USB dongle plug-and-play (Not compatible with landlines/desk phones/VoIP phones)
- Dual Connectivity & Intuitive Flip-to-Mute Microphone—Noise cancelling headphones for work stay connected to two devices at once via adaptor and Bluetooth. The innovative flip-to-mute microphone boom allows you to mute conversations instantly and reliably with a simple, physical flip—ensuring privacy and convenience without fumbling for buttons (MFB answers/ends cell calls only)
- Advanced Bluetooth 5.4—Powered by the latest Bluetooth 5.4, the wireless headphones with mic offer faster pairing, a rock-solid connection, and significantly lower battery consumption. Enjoy the freedom to move around your workspace with an impressive 33-foot operating range, all while maintaining crystal-clear audio without dropouts
- All-Day Comfort—With breathable leather ear cushions, an adjustable headband, 270° rotatable microphone, Bluetooth headset with microphone remains comfortable through the longest shifts. Quick 2-hour charge delivers up to 35 hours of talk time or 50 hours of music, making wireless computer headset with microphone ideal for back-to-back meetings and international travel.
- A percentage. Sony states that the remaining charge it displays “may differ from the actual remaining charge in some cases.” Treat a percentage as an estimate, particularly near the end of a charge.
- A coarse band. HP’s guidance for its headsets uses four bands: “Battery high” for 12 hours or more, “Battery medium” for 2 to 12 hours, “Battery low” for 30 minutes to 2 hours, and “Battery critical” for less than 30 minutes. These time bands come from HP’s page for its own headsets. Do not apply them to other brands.
- A remaining-time warning. Philips says a “Battery low” voice prompt means approximately 30 minutes of use remain on the SHB4385BK/00 and SHB4385BK/27. Audeze describes an early warning at about one hour remaining for the Penrose, and says actual time varies with use.
Model examples at a glance
The table below lists how each documented example reports charge. Where a manufacturer page did not state something, the table says so rather than guessing.
| Headset (manufacturer source) | Where the reading appears | Type of reading | Covers headset, case, or both |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Modern Wireless Headset (Microsoft Support) | Voice prompt at power-on; Microsoft Accessory Center on Windows 10/11 | Spoken remaining charge; level shown in the app | Not stated |
| HP headsets (HP Support) | Voice alert or LEDs at power-on; HP Poly Studio | Bands: high, medium, low, critical | Not stated |
| Philips SHB4385BK/00 and SHB4385BK/27 (Philips Support) | Voice prompt and LEDs | “Battery low” prompt, about 30 minutes of use left | Headset and case, as specified on the page |
| Sony ULT WEAR (Sony Help Guide) | Connected iOS or Android Bluetooth display; iOS battery widget; Sony Headphones Connect | Percentage shown on device; may differ from actual charge | Not stated |
| Audeze Penrose (Audeze) | Audeze HQ app on Windows or Mac | Percentage in app; early warning at about one hour remaining | Not stated |
| Dell WL7022 (Dell support guide) | Plantronics Hub; power-switch voice or LED method | Not stated in the guide’s summary | Not stated |
Light colors are model-specific
Microsoft’s support page describes the Modern Wireless Headset light as flashing amber while charging and solid white when fully charged. That is a description of one model, not a color code for headsets in general. Philips documents white LEDs during charging and lights off when charging is complete, for the headset and case as specified on its page. If your headset is from another maker, use its guide rather than assuming these colors.

When the reading is missing or implausible
- Check that the headset is powered on and connected to the device you are looking at. A headset paired to another device may not report to the phone you are checking.
- Confirm the companion app supports your exact model and operating system version before troubleshooting the app itself.
- If a percentage drops or jumps sharply, rely on the voice prompt or LED pattern in the model guide, and charge the headset fully before judging the reading again.
- If none of the methods above give any reading, the model guide or the manufacturer’s support channel is the right next step.
Keep the source limits in mind
The manufacturer pages behind these steps were not all dated in the material consulted, and the numeric thresholds above (such as HP’s time bands and Philips’ 30-minute prompt) are product-specific wording. Use them as a guide to your own model’s behaviour, and verify against the current support page for your exact model before relying on a specific time.
