Batch testing in software means grouping multiple test cases or scripts into one runnable unit and executing them together. A batch may run sequentially on one worker or across several workers; grouping tests does not, by itself, make them parallel. It can simplify routine test runs, but good case-level results and logs are essential for finding failures.

What batch testing means—and what it does not

A batch is a submission and execution unit: for example, a test suite, a tagged subset of a suite, or a collection of scripts launched by one CI job. The run can report both an overall result and the outcomes of its individual tests.

Batching describes how tests are grouped and submitted. Regression testing describes why tests are run: to check existing behavior after a change. Parallel testing describes how tests execute: concurrently on multiple workers. A regression suite can be run as a batch, and a batch can be parallel, but none of these terms means the same thing.

This article uses “batch testing” in the software-testing sense. Testing a batch of manufactured products or materials is a different practice.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When batching is useful

  • CI checks: Run a defined group of tests after a build or change, especially when the result should inform whether work proceeds.
  • Regression runs: Submit an existing-behavior suite as one unit rather than launching cases one by one.
  • Scheduled checks: Run broader suites on a timetable when immediate feedback is not required for every change.
  • Device or data runs: Group tests that need coordinated inputs or environments. Google Cloud, for example, documents automated Android device batch testing and sharding through its Developer Device Platform.

Batching can reduce repeated launch effort and make routine execution more consistent. It does not improve weak tests: cases still need meaningful inputs, expected outcomes, and relevant scenario coverage.

How to plan and run a batch

  1. Choose the purpose and scope. Decide whether the batch is a short change gate, a regression suite, a scheduled broad check, or a device/data run. The batch format does not determine the test’s purpose.
  2. Select cases and data. Include ordinary workflows, edge conditions, and inputs relevant to the risk being checked. For AI-agent evaluations, Salesforce’s Agentforce Test Suites (Beta) guidance recommends considering scenario volume, diversity, and quality; it suggests starting with 10 or 20 scenarios and reviewing them against the agent’s parameters. That recommendation is specific to the product example, not a universal batch-size rule.
  3. Make the group addressable. Configure a framework suite or collection, a CI job, or a script that invokes the chosen cases. Katalon describes organizing scripts into suites and suite collections.
  4. Choose a trigger and execution mode. Trigger the run after a build or schedule it, depending on how quickly the result is needed and what capacity is available. Run sequentially when cases depend on order or share state; use parallel workers only when capacity and test isolation allow safe concurrency.
  5. Keep per-case evidence. Capture individual pass/fail outcomes, logs, and useful artifacts, not only a group-level status. Katalon identifies reports, screenshots, videos, and logs as aids to debugging.
  6. Review and adjust. Investigate failures, remove accidental dependencies, refresh stale cases, and resize or split the group if the run takes too long or feedback is difficult to interpret.

Choose batch size and execution mode deliberately

Decision What to weigh Practical guidance
One large batch or several smaller batches Startup overhead, time to feedback, failure isolation, and report readability Smaller groups can make failures easier to locate; larger groups may reduce repeated setup. There is no universally established ideal size, so balance worker-start cost against diagnosis and feedback time.
Sequential or parallel execution Case dependencies, shared state, worker capacity, and total elapsed time Sequential execution suits order-dependent or resource-sharing tests. Parallel execution may shorten elapsed time but requires capacity and cases that can run safely at the same time.
Event-triggered or scheduled run Whether the result gates a change, capacity, and acceptable feedback delay Use event-triggered execution when a result is needed after a build or change; schedule broad checks when immediate feedback is less important. Exact scheduling options depend on the platform.
Self-managed framework or managed platform Team expertise, environment and device coverage, orchestration, reporting, and cost A framework or CI job may be sufficient for a straightforward suite. Consider a managed service when device allocation or orchestration is the actual bottleneck.

What can go wrong, and how to limit the impact

  • Failures are hard to locate: A single red status for a large run hides which case failed. Retain case-level results, logs, and artifacts, and divide suites where reports become difficult to read.
  • Tests depend on execution order: A case may pass alone but fail after another case changes shared state. Isolate data and resources where possible, and use sequential execution where order is genuinely required.
  • The batch takes too long: A broad run can delay feedback. Separate quick checks from longer suites, or distribute independent cases across workers when safe and affordable.
  • Cases become stale: As software changes, old inputs and expectations can produce noise. Review and update cases as part of normal maintenance.
  • Configuration grows harder to maintain: Grouping, triggers, and environments also need upkeep. Keep the batch definition understandable and remove obsolete cases or settings.

What efficiency claims can—and cannot—tell you

A 2020 Concordia University thesis, “Software Batch Testing to Reduce Build Test Executions”, reports average savings of around half of build test executions for the approaches it evaluated compared with testing each change individually. That is a result from the thesis’s evaluated approaches, not a general benchmark or a promise that any team will cut its runs by half. The benefit depends on the repository, test selection, build process, and batching strategy.

Examples of platform-specific approaches

Managed Android device execution

Google Cloud’s Developer Device Platform overview describes a Device Run API for automated batch testing, including instrumentation and JUnit tests. Its documented model uses sessions, jobs, and executions; the page also describes smart or uniform sharding and automatic device replacement after certain device or connection failures. The service requires Google Cloud billing. The overview, last updated September 30, 2026, says the initial launch supports Android app developers and that iOS support was planned for later; availability and scope may change.

AI-agent scenario suites

Salesforce Trailhead’s five-step strategy for testing AI agents is a narrower example: create scenarios and test data, choose evaluation criteria, run a suite, and have a person validate responses. It concerns Agentforce Test Suites (Beta), rather than a general rule for all software test batches.

Is batch testing right for your team?

Use a batch when the cases belong in a repeatable run and grouping makes launch, scheduling, or orchestration easier. Keep the group small enough—or split it intelligently enough—that failures remain diagnosable and results arrive when they are useful. Choose sequential or parallel execution separately, based on dependencies and available capacity.
