Basilicata’s healthcare Central Reservation Center is back online after a data center failure in Potenza disrupted regional IT services between Sunday and Monday. The regional government said its investigation ruled out a cyberattack; the reported cause was an anomaly in the main cooling system and a backup system that failed to start. The available report confirms restoration of the healthcare booking center, not every affected system.

What happened to IT systems in southern Italy?

A failure at the regional data center in Potenza, Basilicata, disrupted some public IT services between Sunday and Monday, according to Data Center Dynamics (DCD), reporting on October 5, 2026. DCD says technicians worked for several hours to address the failure. The report does not give the exact time the outage began or a system-by-system account of which services were affected.

The regional government said its first response efforts focused on healthcare, which it described as the most sensitive area for the community, with the aim of restoring essential services. The DCD report quotes the government but does not identify an individual official who made the statement.

Are Basilicata’s healthcare booking systems back online?

Yes. The regional government said the Central Reservation Center (Centro Unico di Prenotazione), used to book healthcare services, was back online on Wednesday. DCD does not specify the restoration time or confirm when each other regional service returned. The report therefore supports a specific status update for the healthcare booking center, not a claim that every public IT system is operational.

What caused the outage in Basilicata?

DCD reports that an anomaly in the data center’s main cooling system coincided with a backup system failing to start. The resulting instability in data storage made some services temporarily unavailable. The report does not identify specific equipment or describe a more detailed technical mechanism.

According to DCD, technicians spent several hours working to fix the failure. The report does not describe any permanent remediation, resilience upgrades, or changes to the cooling or backup systems.

Was the Potenza data center outage a cyberattack?

The regional government said its investigation ruled out a cyberattack and found no evidence of unauthorized access to systems or of personal data being stolen, exfiltrated, or disclosed without authorization. This is the government’s stated finding as reported by DCD, not an independently published forensic assessment in the report.

What other impacts were reported?

DCD, citing Italia 2 News, reported that the outage affected some administrative deadlines, including applications for university scholarships and housing. It also reported that a Tuesday meeting of the Regional Council was postponed. These effects are attributed to secondary reporting in DCD’s account.

What remains unclear?

DCD’s report does not provide a complete list of affected services, exact outage and restoration times for each system, a full technical incident report, or a publicly described remediation plan. It also notes that Italy has around 200 data-center facilities, with infrastructure concentrated in northern and central hubs such as Milan and Rome and relatively sparse in the south; DCD does not state the underlying dataset or year for that approximate figure.
