In PC hardware, a barebone system is a partly assembled or configurable computer platform that still needs one or more components before it is ready to use. The term does not specify a fixed package: check the exact model and listing to see what is included.
What does “barebone system” mean?
“Barebone” means reduced to essentials. In the context of computers, it usually describes a PC or mini PC platform supplied with some parts already installed and others left for the buyer to choose or add. The label describes a starting point, not a standardized bill of materials.
For example, Lenovo describes configurable barebone systems and notes that compact form factors can limit component compatibility. The MythTV Official Wiki also uses the term for systems where a user supplies components such as a processor, memory or storage. These are general descriptions, not promises about what any particular kit contains: Lenovo’s barebone glossary and the MythTV hardware category.

There is no universal list. A kit may include a chassis and motherboard, while other parts may be optional or absent. Depending on the model, the processor, RAM, storage, operating system, power supply, cooling or accessories may also vary. Read the specific product listing and manufacturer specifications rather than inferring the contents from “barebone.”

- Supports AMD AM4 Socket Ryzen 2000, 3000, 4000 G-Series, 5000 and 5000 G-Series Desktop Processors, up to 65W
- Supports MAX Height ≦ 54mm CPU Cooler
- Supports 4 x DDR4-3200MHz DIMMs, up to 128GB
- 1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 2 x SATA3, 1 x Ultra M.2 (PCIe Gen3 x4)
- Graphics Output Options:DisplayPort, HDMI & D-Sub
Older glossary definitions also differ in the components they associate with a barebone system, reinforcing that the term is not a reliable package specification. TechTerms’ barebone system definition is one such general reference.
What do you need to add?
First identify what the particular system already contains; then add only what is missing and supported. Depending on the kit, that may mean selecting a compatible processor, installing memory or storage, or obtaining an operating system. Some kits may already include some or all of these.

- Processor: Confirm supported models or families and any platform or thermal limits.
- Memory: Check the supported memory type, capacity and number of slots.
- Storage: Verify supported drive interfaces, formats and capacities, including whether a drive is supplied.
- Power and cooling: Establish what is included and whether it supports the parts you intend to use.
- Operating system and accessories: Check whether an OS, cables, antennas or other needed items are part of the package.
Compatibility matters especially in small systems, where dimensions, cooling and expansion options can restrict choices. Lenovo’s glossary discusses compact-form-factor constraints; the exact limits depend on the model.

How should you compare barebone kits?
Compare specific configurations, not the barebone label. A useful comparison includes the supplied parts, supported component types and capacities, dimensions, expansion options, cooling and power provision, and whether an operating system is included. Then account for the components you would need to buy separately to reach your intended setup. A barebone system may let you choose or reuse parts, but that flexibility does not establish that it will cost less than a complete PC.

A current example reported by Tom’s Hardware on September 1, 2025, illustrates how configurations can work: Shuttle introduced the XPC slim DH810 as a barebone mini PC supporting a user-selected Intel Core Ultra 200-series processor within stated thermal limits, with DDR5 memory and SATA/M.2 storage options. This dated example shows one use of the term; it does not establish current stock, price or availability. See Tom’s Hardware’s DH810 report and check the manufacturer’s specifications for a current configuration.

No. The phrase can describe other kinds of systems. For instance, a U.S. Department of Justice report used “bare-bones” for a proposed automated vehicle-monitoring arrangement, estimating that it would consist of a mini-computer, two terminals, a storage device and a line printer. That is a historical, non-consumer-PC use, not a definition of a barebone computer kit. U.S. Department of Justice report.
