Is there a real difference between dedicated servers and bare-metal servers? Often, the terms overlap: both can describe a physical server allocated to one customer. But “dedicated” does not, by itself, promise direct access to unvirtualized hardware. “Bare metal” usually emphasizes access to the physical machine without a provider hypervisor between the customer’s operating system and the hardware. Providers do not use the labels uniformly, so compare the service details, not just the name.

What do “dedicated” and “bare metal” mean?

Dedicated usually describes who gets the hardware: a server or host is allocated to one customer. The term alone does not settle whether the provider runs a hypervisor on it or whether the customer can install an operating system directly on the physical machine.

Bare metal usually emphasizes the delivery: the customer receives access to a physical machine, commonly with the ability to choose and run an operating system directly on it. The provider’s management responsibilities and the customer’s controls still depend on the specific offer.

There is no single universal service definition behind these labels in the sources reviewed. A March 11, 2024 article by Christopher Tozzi describes the distinction as generally reflecting marketing and delivery choices more than hard hardware differences: TechTarget’s comparison. Treat that as an explanation of common usage, not a formal standard.

How do the terms differ in practice?

Buyer question What “bare metal” commonly signals What “dedicated server” commonly signals What to verify
Who gets the machine? A physical server assigned to one tenant A server assigned exclusively to one customer Whether tenancy is exclusive, and whether the provider allows sharing within an account
Is there a provider hypervisor? Often absent between the customer’s operating system and the hardware Not determined by the label Whether the offer is bare metal, a VM on a dedicated host, or another configuration
Who manages it? May be self-managed or provider-managed May be managed hosting or unmanaged hardware rental Who handles OS installation and patching, hardware replacement, monitoring, support, and remote-console access
How is it provisioned? May be API-driven or cloud-like May use conventional hosting ordering and setup Provisioning time, automation, billing interval, and how capacity can be changed
What should you compare? Direct hardware access and workload requirements Allocation, management scope, and service terms Hardware configuration, support, location, contract, and licensing requirements

These are common signals, not guarantees. For example, AWS distinguishes Dedicated Instances, Dedicated Hosts, and bare-metal instances. Its documentation says Dedicated Instances may share a host with other instances from the same AWS account that are not themselves Dedicated Instances; Dedicated Hosts provide a physical server dedicated to customer use; and bare-metal instances provide direct access to EC2 hardware. AWS also notes that a dedicated server can run a provider’s virtualization software. See AWS’s Dedicated Instances documentation and AWS’s comparison of Dedicated Hosts and Dedicated Instances.

Can bare metal still be a cloud service?

Yes. Bare metal describes access to physical hardware; it does not require a traditional, non-cloud ordering or management experience. Google says its Compute Engine bare-metal instances are consumed and managed in a manner similar to VM instances. Cloud-style provisioning and management can therefore coexist with dedicated physical hardware. See Google Cloud’s Bare Metal Solution overview.

Provisioning speed is sometimes presented as a difference between bare-metal and dedicated-server offers, but it is not a reliable definition of either term. Check the actual provider’s provisioning process and capacity-change options. For another example of provider-specific terminology, Huawei’s FAQ distinguishes Bare Metal Server from Dedicated Host by whether a virtualization platform is provided by default: Huawei Cloud’s Bare Metal Server FAQ.

What should you check before choosing a server?

  1. Confirm tenancy. Ask whether the physical server is reserved for your organization, and whether any sharing is permitted within your account or service.
  2. Establish the virtualization arrangement. Find out whether you receive the physical machine, a VM running on a dedicated host, or another configuration. If direct hardware access matters, get that requirement confirmed in the offer documentation.
  3. Check operating-system and hypervisor controls. Verify who installs and patches the OS, whether you can select it, what remote-console access is included, and whether the provider permits the hypervisor or virtualization software your workload needs.
  4. Define management and support boundaries. Confirm responsibility for monitoring, hardware failure and replacement, OS issues, and ongoing administration. “Bare metal” and “dedicated” do not independently specify a support level.
  5. Compare delivery and commercial terms. Check provisioning and capacity-change processes, billing intervals, available hardware and locations, contract terms, and any software licensing conditions relevant to your deployment.

Which term should guide your decision?

Use the terms as clues, then decide from the documented configuration and service terms. If your requirement is exclusive hardware allocation, confirm tenancy. If you also need the operating system to run directly on the physical machine, confirm bare-metal access and the provider’s virtualization arrangement. For management, provisioning, and licensing, compare the actual service commitments rather than inferring them from either label.
