Never disclose an OTP, PIN, CVV, password or other confidential credential to a caller or in response to an unsolicited message. A caller claiming to work for your bank does not make the request safe. If you receive an authentication code for an action you initiated, check the bank’s message and purpose; do not tell the code to another person or approve an action you did not start. This guide centers on India; contact routes and liability rules vary by country.

What will a bank never ask you to share?

Punjab & Sind Bank says bank officials, financial institutions, the RBI and other genuine entities never ask customers to share confidential information such as usernames, passwords, card details, CVVs or OTPs. The RBI likewise warns customers not to share passwords, PINs, OTPs, CVVs or UPI PINs. Punjab & Sind Bank’s cyberfraud guidance and the RBI’s digital banking safeguards set out that core rule.

That does not mean a bank never sends an OTP. A code may be sent to authenticate a transaction or customer action. Read the message to understand what it authorizes, enter it only for an action you initiated through a channel you trust, and never disclose it to a caller. Do not approve a transaction you did not initiate.

Delhi Police describes a CVV as the three- to four-digit number printed on the reverse side of a card. Treat it, along with the card number and expiry date, as sensitive payment information—not as details to provide to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

How OTP, PIN and CVV scams work

Urgency and claimed authority

A caller may claim to be a bank employee or technical-support representative and say your account or card will be blocked, your KYC needs updating, or an unauthorized transaction must be stopped. The pressure is meant to make you act before verifying the story. Delhi Police describes these tactics in its vishing and phishing fraud guidance.

Card details followed by an OTP request

A fraudster may first ask for your card number, expiry date and CVV, then trigger a transaction and ask you to read out the resulting OTP. Delhi Police warns that the caller may keep you talking so you do not notice the transaction taking place. A real-sounding explanation or knowledge of personal details does not validate the request.

Fake rewards, penalties and urgent payments

Fraudsters may promise a bank gift, discount or prize, or warn of a penalty or account problem, then ask you to “verify” your details or make an urgent payment. The incentive or threat is a pretext to obtain information or persuade you to authorize a payment.

Lookalike links and malicious apps

A message can link to a page that resembles your bank’s website. A fake or unknown app may also expose information stored on your device, including OTPs. The RBI has warned about links sent in messages and emails, SIM-card swapping and other familiar fraud methods in its June 22, 2020 circular on public awareness about payment frauds. Punjab & Sind Bank also warns about unknown apps that can expose confidential details and received OTPs.

UPI payment requests and PINs

A supposed buyer may send you a UPI payment request and tell you to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. Punjab & Sind Bank warns that entering the PIN approves sending money; it is not needed simply to receive a payment. Read the request carefully and reject an unexpected request you did not intend to approve.

SIM swaps and remote access

In a SIM swap, a fraudster obtains a duplicate SIM and may receive OTPs sent to your number. Watch for a prolonged loss of mobile service and contact your mobile operator if it is unexplained. A caller may also ask you to install a screen-sharing or remote-access app, which can let them observe or control your device. Do not install an app at an unsolicited caller’s direction.

How to verify a suspicious bank contact

Use the channel and action—not the caller’s claimed identity—to judge what to do. A message, caller or link that you did not seek is different from an action you initiated inside a bank channel you opened yourself.

Situation Safer response
An unsolicited caller, message or link asks for a code, PIN, CVV, password or card details. Do not disclose the information, follow the link or approve a transaction. End the call or stop replying.
You need to check a claimed account problem. Contact the bank separately using a trusted route, such as its official app, the number printed on your card or its verified website. Confirm the issue there.
You initiated a transaction and receive an authentication code. Check the bank’s message and the transaction details. Proceed only if they match the action you intended; never share the code with a person.
A caller directs you to install an app or share your screen. Do not install or grant access. If you already did, contact the bank promptly through a trusted channel and seek device-security help.

Delhi Police advises typing the bank’s URL directly into the browser rather than following a link in a message. Its fake-call fraud guidance also recommends contacting the bank independently. Check the appropriate contact route against your own bank’s official information.

What to do if you shared a credential or approved a payment

  1. Contact your bank immediately through a trusted channel. Explain exactly what you shared, entered or approved, and when.
  2. Ask the bank to secure the affected account or card. Follow its instructions on blocking or replacing a card, securing access, and reporting any transaction you did not authorize.
  3. Preserve evidence. Keep relevant SMS and email messages, screenshots, call details and transaction records for the bank or an official report.
  4. If you installed an app or granted remote access, tell the bank and seek device-security help. The specific cleanup steps depend on the device and situation; there is no single procedure established by the cited bank guidance.

Do not assume that a particular report will guarantee reimbursement or that one deadline applies everywhere. The applicable liability rules and reporting routes depend on your country, bank and transaction type; check current official bank and local-authority guidance.
