If your old iPhone is still with you and WhatsApp is not yet activated on your new Android phone, start with WhatsApp’s own iPhone-to-Android transfer. It is the baseline to check before any third-party tool. Backuptrans is a Windows program that claims it can move WhatsApp messages and attachments through a computer, including from an iTunes backup. Those are the vendor’s claims. Its current compatibility with 2026 iPhone and Android software is not established by the vendor pages available, so confirm support with Backuptrans before you pay for anything.
Choose your route first
The two routes solve different situations. The table below compares them on the points that usually decide the choice. Where a value is not stated by the source, the cell says so.
| Question | WhatsApp’s iPhone-to-Android transfer | Backuptrans (Windows utility) |
|---|---|---|
| Do you need the old iPhone during the transfer? | Yes. The transfer runs between the two phones and you start it on the iPhone. | Not stated for the direct phone connection. The vendor says restoring from an iTunes computer backup works without the original iPhone connected. |
| Does WhatsApp need to be activated on the Android phone first? | No. The transfer must happen before WhatsApp is activated on the new Android phone. | Not stated in the vendor material reviewed. |
| Can existing Android chats be merged with transferred chats? | No. WhatsApp’s Help Center says new chats on the new phone cannot be merged with old chats from the old phone. | The vendor says chats “will be merged perfectly on Android.” This is promotional copy, not an independently verified result. |
| Device and OS support | Current WhatsApp versions are required on both phones. The Help Center does not list a fixed device matrix in the instructions reviewed. | The product page lists dated Windows, iOS, iTunes and Android requirements. It does not establish support for current 2026 releases. |
| What moves across | Account information, individual and group chats, communities, channel updates, chat history, call history, media and settings, with listed exclusions. | Messages and attachments, with export to TXT, CSV, DOC, HTML or PDF and attachment extraction, according to the vendor. |
| Business accounts | iPhone-to-Android WhatsApp Business migration is not currently supported, per WhatsApp’s page. | Not stated for WhatsApp Business. |
| Cost | No charge stated for the built-in process. | Paid software. Current pricing is not stated here because the vendor listing is not current; check Backuptrans directly. |
WhatsApp’s own iPhone-to-Android transfer
WhatsApp’s Help Center says account information can be moved between phone types, including iPhone and Android, and that profile information, individual and group chats, settings and other account history are retained through the supported process. The steps below follow the iPhone-to-Android instructions. Check the live help page on the day you start, because the steps and exclusions can change.
Before you start
- Use the same phone number on both phones.
- Update WhatsApp to the current version on the iPhone and on the Android phone.
- Connect both phones to stable Wi-Fi.
- Keep the old iPhone’s WhatsApp data in place until the transfer is complete.
- Do not activate WhatsApp on the new Android phone yet.
Steps
- On the iPhone, start WhatsApp’s “Transfer chat history” option, then choose “Transfer to Android”.
- On the Android phone, install or open WhatsApp and verify the same account, using the same phone number.
- When the Android phone shows a QR code, scan it with the iPhone.
- Join the local Wi-Fi connection the phones set up, and leave both phones connected until the transfer finishes.
What is not transferred
WhatsApp lists these exclusions for the iPhone-to-Android process: display name, status updates, media received through channels, and peer-to-peer payment messages. Plan to save anything in those categories elsewhere before you start.

What Backuptrans says it does
Backuptrans describes a Windows utility that transfers WhatsApp messages and attachments from iPhone to Android through a computer. According to its product page, the software can:
- connect both phones and select all chats or a single conversation;
- save a local database of the messages;
- export messages to TXT, CSV, DOC, HTML or PDF, and print conversations;
- extract attachments;
- restore WhatsApp messages to Android from an iTunes computer backup without the original iPhone connected.
A related Backuptrans support page describes a broader package, “Android iPhone WhatsApp Transfer +”, which it says covers transfers in both directions, computer backups, restores and attachment extraction. That broader package is not evidence that the specifically titled product works with your phones.

Does Backuptrans work with my phone?
The vendor’s compatibility statements are dated and mixed. The product page lists:
- Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, plus older versions;
- an Intel or AMD CPU, or an Apple M1 or later;
- at least 200 MB of disk space and 2 GB of RAM;
- iTunes 10 or later, and an iPhone running iOS 4 or later;
- a separate note that iOS 10 through iOS 14 require iTunes 12.10 or later.
An update notice on the same page mentions iOS 16, iPhone 14 family models, iPhone SE (2022) and Android 12. The page does not show a current date, and none of these details establishes support for current 2026 iOS, iTunes, Windows or Android releases. Before buying, ask Backuptrans in writing which iPhone model, iOS version, Android model and Windows version your setup uses, and ask for a confirmation you can keep.

Can I transfer without my old iPhone?
Only the backup route described by Backuptrans is designed for this case, and it depends on conditions you must check first:
Rank #4
- Note: To get the full 10 Gbps, both ends of the cable must be plugged into USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (USB-C and USB-A). if in doubt, check with the device's brand service or FEMORO support
- up to 10 Gbps High-Speed Data Transfer: This USB-C cable meets USB 3.2 Gen 2 spec, delivering up to 1 050 MB/s—twice the speed of USB 3.0
- up to 3A Fast Charging: This USB-A to USB-C cable carries up to 3 A. It supports both slow charging and fast charging in accordance with the USB-A standard
- 10X Tensile Strength: Double-layer cotton braided delivers 10× the tensile strength of ordinary cables and reinforced strain relief survives 20 000+ bend cycles

- You need an iTunes backup of the iPhone saved on a Windows computer before the iPhone is lost, sold or wiped.
- The iTunes version and the iOS version must fall within the vendor’s stated requirements for that backup.
- WhatsApp’s own process cannot run without the old iPhone, so it is not an alternative in this case.
Whether a backup made on your iPhone restores cleanly to your Android phone has not been established by independent testing. Treat the vendor’s claim as unverified until you have tried it with a copy of your own data.

Can I merge my WhatsApp chats on Android?
WhatsApp’s Help Center states that chats on a new phone cannot be merged with old chats from the old phone. The order matters: the transfer must happen before WhatsApp is activated on the new Android phone. If WhatsApp is already active there, the first-party route described above is no longer the clean path, and you should check WhatsApp’s current Help Center for options before you use any other tool.

Backuptrans’s sentence, “All these WhatsApp chat messages will be merged perfectly on Android,” is marketing copy from the vendor. Treat it as a claim to test, not as a guarantee.
When a cable is part of the setup
Google’s Android switching guide describes a classic switch that uses a cable to connect the iPhone and the Android phone during setup. Google also says an upgraded setup process is available on select Android 17 devices and will roll out further. Your phone model, the setup method you are offered, and the ports on both phones decide whether you need a cable at all.
Before you buy a cable, confirm three things: the connector type on both phones, whether the phones’ current setup method calls for a cable, and whether the cable you already own supports data transfer rather than charging only.
Before you begin, check these
- Confirm your Android model’s setup method in Google’s current switching guide.
- Confirm Backuptrans support for your exact iPhone, iOS, iTunes, Windows and Android versions, in writing.
- Keep the old iPhone’s WhatsApp data in place until the new Android phone shows the transferred chats.
- Back up the iPhone to a computer before using any third-party tool.
- Do not activate WhatsApp on the new phone until the transfer is finished.
If you have already activated WhatsApp on the Android phone, stop and read WhatsApp’s current Help Center before you try any other route.
