Use Android WorkManager for most deferrable jobs, Apple’s Background Tasks framework for scheduled iOS refresh or processing, and Flutter’s WorkManager plugin when Dart work needs persistent scheduling. None of these is a guarantee that a job will run at an exact time: mobile operating systems control background execution, and the right approach depends on whether work can wait, must continue from the foreground, or needs to survive an app restart.
Choose an approach based on the work
Before choosing an API, decide whether the task can be deferred, how long or what kind of work it needs to perform, and whether it must continue after the user leaves the app. Android groups background work into asynchronous work, task scheduling, and foreground services; iOS distinguishes scheduled work from work that begins in the foreground and continues after backgrounding.
- Deferrable work: Use a scheduler designed to run work when the operating system allows it. On Android, WorkManager is the recommended choice for most background tasks.
- Short content refresh: On iOS, use the refresh task type when the app needs an opportunity to update content in the background.
- Longer processing: On iOS, use a processing task for scheduled work that needs more processing than a refresh.
- Work that begins in the foreground: If critical work starts while the person is using the app and needs to continue after they background it, consider iOS continued processing rather than treating it as a deferred scheduled job.
- Simple asynchronous work: On Android, asynchronous work may be appropriate while the app remains in a valid lifecycle stage, but it can stop when that lifecycle condition no longer holds.
These approaches serve different needs. A scheduled worker is not a precise alarm, and a foreground-started task is not interchangeable with deferred background work.
Android: use WorkManager for most deferrable jobs
Android’s background-work guidance describes asynchronous work, task scheduling APIs, and foreground services as separate approaches. Start with WorkManager for most jobs that can run later under system-managed scheduling. Use another approach when the job’s lifecycle or execution requirements call for it.

When WorkManager fits
Choose WorkManager for deferrable background work that should be scheduled rather than tied to the app remaining open. Scheduling does not mean the job runs at a fixed time: the system manages execution and applies scheduling constraints. Design the job to tolerate delay.
When asynchronous work is not enough
Simple asynchronous work can be suitable for work associated with an active app lifecycle stage. It is a poor fit when the task must keep running after that stage ends, because the work may stop when the app is no longer in a valid lifecycle state. Choose a scheduler or another Android background-work approach when the job must be managed beyond that lifecycle.

iOS: schedule work without assuming an exact run time
Apple’s Background Tasks framework supports task registration and scheduling for work performed in the background. Apple’s guidance is to register launch handlers for framework-provided tasks and schedule tasks as needed. The system decides when scheduled processing work launches, so scheduling requests an opportunity to run; it does not set a guaranteed clock time.
Refresh tasks
Use a refresh task when the app needs a brief opportunity to update content in the background. It is the appropriate category for refresh work, not a promise that content will be updated at a precise interval.

Processing tasks
Use a processing task for longer scheduled processing. Apple’s strategy guidance says the system chooses the best time to launch processing work. Build around that system-controlled timing rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
Continued processing after foreground work
Some critical work begins while the app is in the foreground and needs to continue if the user backgrounds it. Apple describes a continued-processing task for this case. This differs from a scheduled processing task: the former continues foreground-started work, while the latter is deferred and launched when the system chooses.

Flutter: separate Dart execution from native scheduling
Flutter background execution uses Dart isolates: separate execution contexts that do not share memory with the main program. A background callback therefore should not be treated as if it can directly use the main isolate’s in-memory state.

The Flutter background processes guide describes a WorkManager plugin for persistent processing across app restarts and system reboots. The plugin provides a cross-platform interface, but it does not remove the underlying Android and iOS differences. Scheduling and execution timing remain subject to the target operating system and the plugin’s behavior.
For a Flutter implementation, plan for the background callback to run outside the main isolate, and check the plugin’s documentation for the target platform and version. The documented persistence behavior does not establish that a task will execute at an exact time.
Set expectations for scheduling and persistence
Mobile background scheduling is system-managed. Android scheduling uses constraints, while Apple explicitly says the system chooses when to launch scheduled processing tasks. Treat a scheduled job as work the OS may run when conditions permit—not as a timer that guarantees execution at a particular hour or interval.

- Use a background scheduler when the task can wait and should be managed beyond the current app lifecycle.
- Use a foreground-continuation model only when work begins in the foreground and needs to continue after backgrounding.
- Distinguish a platform’s support for persistence from a guarantee about when a task runs; persistence across restarts does not imply exact timing.
- For cross-platform apps, account for each operating system’s scheduling model instead of assuming one shared Flutter API means identical behavior.
