Start by identifying what the application must do and where it will run; then compare a shortlist on maintainability, security, integration needs, and performance under a representative workload.
How to narrow your framework shortlist
Framework selection is an architectural decision, not a popularity contest. Google’s framework-selection guidance recommends choosing a language and development pattern that fit the project, then evaluating the requirements that remain. Its backend guide also distinguishes considerations across server-based, serverless, and microservice designs.
- Describe the workload. List the application’s main request types, data needs, expected concurrency, integrations, and whether work is primarily CPU-bound or I/O-bound.
- Choose the architecture and hosting constraints. A conventional server-based app may benefit from a complete feature set. For serverless, initialization time, memory footprint, event-driven invocation, and provider support may matter more. Microservices can use different languages when that serves the individual services; these are guideposts, not hard rules.
- Factor in the team. Consider current language skills, hiring availability, learning time, and whether the team can maintain the framework and its dependencies over the project’s life.
- Decide how much structure you want. Integrated features can reduce assembly work; a smaller core can offer flexibility but requires the team to establish conventions and select compatible libraries.
- Check production fit. Verify database and ORM needs, integrations, security and update practices, deployment interfaces, static-file handling, error reporting, and cloud or hosting compatibility.
- Test the real risk. If performance is important, measure a representative application and its likely bottlenecks instead of choosing from generic rankings.
How the common options differ
This comparison is an orientation, not a ranking. Google’s framework overview was last updated July 10, 2024, and describes broad framework characteristics rather than establishing current release support or project-specific operational results. Check official framework documentation for the versions and deployment requirements you intend to use.
| Framework | Evidence-backed orientation | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Django (Python) | High-level framework with built-in templating, internationalization, and ORM support. | Will these integrated capabilities speed up a data-backed application? Does its deployment model fit the chosen architecture? |
| Flask (Python) | Microframework with a small core that can be extended through libraries. | Does the team want that flexibility, and will it consistently supply the structure and integrations the application needs? |
| Express (JavaScript) | Small-core framework extended through plugins. | Does a JavaScript backend suit the team? Can the team define conventions as the service grows? |
| Spring Boot (Java or Kotlin) | Provides embedded web servers and aligns with the Spring application framework. | Does the team already work in Java or Kotlin, and would the Spring ecosystem and conventions suit the project? |
| ASP.NET (.NET) | Supports several development patterns, including MVC, real-time applications, and content-oriented templating. | Would .NET skills and tooling help the team? Which application pattern is required? |
| Ruby on Rails, Laravel, or Gin | Google’s overview gives language and broad design descriptions, but the available comparison does not establish detailed current lifecycle or operational tradeoffs for these choices. | Include them when their language and team experience fit; verify current support and deployment requirements before committing. |
The key tradeoff is often integrated structure versus assembling a stack from smaller pieces—not a simple choice between “powerful” and “lightweight.” A compact core can be a good fit when the team has clear conventions; integrated features can be valuable when they match the application’s needs and reduce ongoing assembly work.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match the framework to the architecture
Server-based applications
For an application hosted as a conventional server process, compare the framework’s built-in capabilities with the application’s needs, including routing, database access, templates, and operational integration. The team’s preferred language and the completeness of the framework’s feature set are useful filters, not mandatory rules.
Serverless applications
For serverless deployment, investigate initialization behavior, memory footprint, event-driven invocation, and support from the intended provider. A framework’s suitability for a long-running server does not by itself establish that it is a good fit for the project’s serverless runtime.

Microservices
Services do not have to share one framework or language. A team can choose per service when the benefits justify the added operational and skills complexity. Account for how each choice affects deployment, observability, security updates, and the team’s ability to support the complete system.
Performance: benchmark the application, not the label
A secondary comparison reports synthetic TechEmpower results placing ASP.NET Core, Go, and Spring among raw-throughput leaders, but it cautions that databases, networks, or business logic may dominate production performance. Those results are not a prediction for a particular application. Use tests that resemble your workload, and profile a representative implementation before accepting substantial complexity for a theoretical throughput advantage.

The same comparison reproduces Stack Overflow Developer Survey figures as respondent usage shares, not market shares. It reports 2025 usage of Node.js at 48.7%, Express at 19.9%, ASP.NET Core at 19.7%, FastAPI at 14.8%, Spring Boot at 14.7%, Flask at 14.4%, Django at 12.6%, Laravel at 8.9%, NestJS at 6.7%, and Ruby on Rails at 5.9%. It reports FastAPI at 9.9% in 2024. The comparison attributes the figures to surveys with 23,678 respondents in 2025 and 48,503 in 2024; they may offer context about familiarity, but do not establish framework quality, total market share, or the talent pool available to your team. These figures are reproduced by Resourcifi; the original survey was not independently opened for this comparison.

Development conveniences and production deployment are separate concerns. Django’s official deployment documentation states: “The runserver command starts a lightweight development server, which is not suitable for production.” Django supports WSGI and ASGI; its documentation distinguishes WSGI’s synchronous model from ASGI’s asynchronous-friendly one. Select and configure the production interface to match the application and hosting environment.

A practical decision rule
- Prefer a framework your team can confidently build, secure, deploy, and maintain.
- Choose integrated features when they directly meet requirements; choose a smaller core when flexibility is worth the conventions and integration work it adds.
- Reject candidates that conflict with the architecture, hosting environment, database needs, or required integrations.
- Use workload-specific measurements to resolve meaningful performance questions; do not treat survey popularity or synthetic rankings as a project verdict.
