Moving an Azure VM closer to your Indian viewers may help, but there is no single Azure region guaranteed to give every YouTube stream the lowest latency. Shortlist Central India (Pune), South India (Chennai), and West India (Mumbai) based on where viewers are—and measure the actual VM-to-YouTube route and playback experience before relocating.

Why a nearby Azure region may help—and why it is not a guarantee

Physical distance can add network latency, so Microsoft advises choosing regions with the primary user base in mind and checking performance against your goals. But an Azure VM’s region alone does not determine the path to YouTube or the experience viewers get. Routing, viewer location and ISP, stream configuration, and other parts of the network also matter. Microsoft’s published regional latency figures describe traffic on the Azure backbone between Azure regions; they are not measurements of a VM’s route to YouTube or of viewer playback.

That distinction matters when diagnosing a slow or buffering stream. Measure the route from the deployed VM toward the relevant YouTube endpoints and test playback from the networks where viewers are affected. Azure’s documentation recommends testing actual workloads rather than treating inter-region statistics as a substitute.

Which Azure regions should you consider in India?

Microsoft lists three Azure regions in India: Central India in Pune, South India in Chennai, and West India in Mumbai. Use audience geography to make an initial shortlist; “India” by itself is not specific enough to identify the best network path. A channel with many viewers in western India may start by evaluating Mumbai, while one serving viewers concentrated in the south may include Chennai. These are starting points, not performance findings.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Before choosing a candidate, check Microsoft’s current list of Azure regions and confirm that the VM size, services, and availability-zone options you need are available there. Microsoft’s region guidance also calls for evaluating proximity alongside compliance, capabilities, cost, capacity, and resilience.

What Azure’s published latency numbers do—and do not—tell you

Microsoft Learn’s Azure network round-trip latency dataset dated July 30, 2026 reports a 20 ms P50 round-trip time from Central India to South India and 29 ms from Central India to Jio India West. These are directional Azure-backbone statistics, not VM-to-YouTube or viewer-playback measurements. Microsoft says the figures are based on continuous internal backbone probes sampled at one-minute intervals and reported as monthly P50 values for the 30-day period ending July 30, 2026. The reverse direction can differ because traffic may take a different path each way.

How to test candidate regions before moving the VM

  1. Map the affected audience. Record the main viewer cities and ISPs, not just the country. Note the VM’s current region and whether it sends the stream directly, relays it through another service, or is involved in some other way.
  2. Choose candidates based on audience and availability. Shortlist Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai as relevant to your audience distribution. Check the current Azure region list for required VM sizes, services, and zone support.
  3. Measure from the actual VM. Collect repeated route and latency observations toward the relevant YouTube endpoints from the deployed VM configuration. Also check viewer playback on affected networks. For the application experience, observe startup delay, buffering, throughput, packet loss, and playback quality over a representative period.
  4. Keep the comparison fair. Use the same VM size, operating system, stream settings, test duration, and comparable measurement times when evaluating regions. Repeat playback checks on the major viewer networks. A single test or a test from one ISP may not represent the audience as a whole.
  5. Evaluate routing preference if your public IP resource is eligible. Azure documents routing over Microsoft’s global network and routing via ISP transit for supported public IP configurations. The paths and egress-price behavior differ; Microsoft does not say which will perform better for YouTube from a given VM. Verify current regional and SKU support before deployment: the routing preference cannot be changed after the public IP is created. See Azure routing preference and its pricing details.
  6. Decide across operational needs, not latency alone. Compare measured performance and stability with compliance and data-residency requirements, service and VM-size availability, regional compute and egress costs, capacity, availability zones, and disaster-recovery design.

When should you move the VM?

Consider a move when repeatable measurements show that a candidate region improves the experience that matters—such as stream startup, continuity, or playback for the relevant viewers—and the region meets your operational and compliance requirements. If results vary by ISP or time, investigate those patterns before treating geography as the cause. A different region can change the route, but Microsoft’s guidance does not predict whether that change will improve a specific YouTube stream.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

There is not enough information to name a winning region without knowing your current VM location, viewer cities and ISPs, VM size, streaming setup, and measured endpoint performance. Microsoft’s region-selection guidance supports proximity as one factor, not a guarantee that one Indian region is universally fastest.
