There is no evidence-based winner on price without comparing a specific Azure configuration with a specific Indian VPS plan. The monthly server rate alone is not enough: continuous streaming also consumes outbound data, and the bill may include compute, disk, taxes and optional services. Azure documents usage-based bandwidth charges and notes that a disk can continue costing money after a VM is stopped. A low advertised VPS price does not establish that its data allowance or service terms suit a 24/7 stream.
If your channel plays prerecorded devotional videos, a cloud streaming service is another approach: it avoids maintaining your own encoder on a rented server. The sections below show how to estimate data use, compare the costs and responsibilities, and choose a method without treating either a server or a streaming tool as an uptime guarantee.
What is being compared?
An Azure VM and an Indian VPS are rented servers on which you can run a streaming process, such as an encoder that sends a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live. You are responsible for configuring and maintaining that process. The comparison here is about a continuous YouTube devotional stream, not a live camera production or a multi-source studio setup.
For this kind of channel, compare the full recurring cost and the reliability of the outbound path to YouTube ingest. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple output formats for playback, so choosing an Indian-origin server by itself does not establish better playback quality for viewers. Test the route from the actual server to the ingest point you will use.

How much outbound data does a 24/7 stream use?
The estimate depends on the bitrate actually sent, not just the resolution label. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not estimates of a provider’s included transfer or monthly charge. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
For a rough month-long calculation, multiply bitrate in megabits per second by 10.8 to estimate decimal gigabytes for 30 days of uninterrupted sending. This uses 30 × 24 hours and 8 bits per byte; it excludes protocol overhead, reconnects, additional streams and any changes in bitrate.

Use the bitrate your encoder actually sends when checking a provider’s transfer allowance. Leave room above the estimate for overhead and operational variation. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and says the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Its streaming tips also warn that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.

What belongs in the monthly cost comparison?
For each candidate, calculate the recurring total on the same billing basis and for the same region, stream bitrate and operating period. Separate these cost lines instead of comparing a VM rate with a VPS headline price:
- Compute: the selected VM or VPS resources and billing period. For Azure, price depends on region and configuration; confirm the selected SKU and operating system in the official Azure Linux Virtual Machines pricing page.
- Operating system or publisher charges: some Marketplace images may include separately billed publisher-provided Linux support.
- Disk: include the OS disk and any disk holding media, logs or backups. Microsoft says an OS disk left behind after a VM is stopped can continue to incur charges.
- Outbound transfer: compare the plan’s included allowance with your estimated monthly use, then check overage or additional transfer charges. Azure states that standard egress charges apply.
- Taxes and optional services: include applicable taxes and any public IP, backups, monitoring or other services your setup requires.
Microsoft’s virtual-machine cost planning guidance explains that regional pricing and bandwidth usage affect cost, and that disks can remain billable after a VM is stopped. Stopping a VM is therefore not necessarily the same as eliminating its recurring costs.
There is no sufficiently comparable, verified current plan here for a named low-cost Indian VPS: a provider’s monthly price, outbound allowance, overage policy, resources and service commitment all need checking directly before making a numerical comparison. Do not treat an undated “cheap VPS” figure as a like-for-like quote. Likewise, a third-party Azure estimate should be reconfirmed against the selected SKU, region, currency, billing assumptions and current Azure Portal pricing; taxes and account-specific discounts can differ.

Azure VM or Indian VPS: how to choose

Azure is not automatically more expensive, and an Indian VPS is not automatically adequate or cheaper once transfer, taxes and storage are included. Choose Azure if its verified total and operating model fit your needs; choose a VPS only after confirming its full transfer and service terms. In either case, server location is a factor to test, not proof of stream reliability.

Can you run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a VPS?
Yes, a rented server can host an encoder that sends a video stream to YouTube, provided the server has enough resources and network capacity for the chosen configuration. A VM or VPS does not itself make a YouTube stream continuous: the encoder, source files, network connection and restart/recovery process still need attention.
- Prepare the source and encoder. Decide whether the channel will loop prerecorded files or use another production workflow. Configure the encoder for the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. YouTube’s encoder guide covers RTMP/RTMPS, supported codec choices, constant bitrate and recommendations by resolution.
- Set up the YouTube broadcast. Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio and use the stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to transmit to your stream. Follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Test before relying on it. Send a test stream, inspect YouTube’s stream health and confirm audio, video and playback. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream health.
- Plan recovery and failover. Decide how the encoder restarts after a process or server failure, how you will notice an outage, and whether a backup encoder is available. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover; do not assume a server restart alone restores a healthy broadcast.
- Keep the server maintained. Account for security updates, storage, logs, source-media backups and incident response. If a stream stops, someone must diagnose the encoder, network or YouTube-side issue.
Continuity, rules and common failure points
Bandwidth or stream-health warnings
Likely cause: the encoder’s total bitrate is too close to, or exceeds, the server’s available outbound capacity. What to do: check actual bitrate and stream health, reduce bitrate or resolution if needed, and leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Also verify the provider’s transfer terms: sustained capacity and monthly data allowance are different questions.

The stream stops after a network disruption
Likely cause: a broken connection or encoder process that does not recover. YouTube says a connectivity disruption can break a stream. What to do: test reconnect and restart behavior, monitor the broadcast, and test a backup-encoder failover if your workflow supports one.
Unexpected server charges
Likely cause: costs beyond the compute rate, such as egress, a retained disk, taxes or optional services. What to do: inspect each line in the provider’s pricing and billing tools. For Azure, check whether disks remain after a VM is stopped and account for standard egress charges.

Copyright or monetization problems
A technically healthy stream can still face YouTube policy or rights issues. Use devotional music, recordings, images and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permission, and check YouTube’s current live-stream rules and account eligibility. A devotional subject does not by itself make a recording copyright-free. Review YouTube’s current requirements in Studio and the relevant rights-holder terms before scheduling a long-running broadcast.
