Azure users should identify the specific PowerShell security advisory behind an alert before choosing an update: current 2026 advisories name different vulnerabilities and require different fixed versions. On each relevant host, run pwsh -v, identify its PowerShell 7 branch, and compare the result with the threshold for the applicable CVE. Azure hosting alone does not establish which advisory or fix applies.
Which PowerShell vulnerability is the alert about?
The headline does not identify a CVE, and that matters: the current 2026 advisories cover separate flaws, with different attack paths and branch-specific fixes. Do not use a version threshold from one advisory to decide whether another is remediated.
| CVE and publication information | Vulnerability and attack path | Affected PowerShell 7 branches and fixed versions | Operating-system or deployment scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-26143; NIST NVD entry from 2026, with no exact publication date stated in the cited entry | Improper input validation that can let an unauthorized attacker bypass a security feature locally | 7.4 before 7.4.14; 7.5 before 7.5.5. Fixed: 7.4.14 or later in the 7.4 branch, and 7.5.5 or later in the 7.5 branch. | Not stated in the cited NIST entry. |
| CVE-2026-62801; PowerShell security advisory published September 11, 2026 | Relative path traversal that can lead to remote code execution over a network | 7.6 below 7.6.6; 7.5 below 7.5.11; 7.4 below 7.4.20. Fixed targets: 7.6.6, 7.5.11, and 7.4.20, respectively. | Not stated in the cited PowerShell advisory as a separate operating-system list. The advisory concerns PowerShell 7. |
| CVE-2026-58612; PowerShell security advisory from 2026, with no exact publication date stated in the cited material | Server-side request forgery (SSRF); the attack path is not stated in the cited summary. | 7.6 below 7.6.5; 7.5 below 7.5.10; 7.4 below 7.4.19. Fixed targets: 7.6.5, 7.5.10, and 7.4.19, respectively. | Windows, macOS, and Linux are affected. The cited summary does not identify Azure Edition as a separate scope. |
These thresholds are specific to the named CVEs. For example, a version that meets the CVE-2026-26143 threshold may still be below the fix for CVE-2026-62801. If an alert does not give a CVE, locate the Microsoft or PowerShell advisory it refers to before deciding that a host is covered.
How to check PowerShell on an Azure VM
- Identify the alert. Record the CVE number from the Microsoft notice, PowerShell advisory, or security alert. If more than one advisory applies, check each separately.
- Check the installed PowerShell 7 version. On the VM, run
pwsh -v. Compare the reported version and its major/minor branch—such as 7.4, 7.5, or 7.6—with that CVE’s affected range. - Compare against the matching fixed target. A version below the listed threshold is within the affected range for that advisory. Use the fixed target for the same branch; do not substitute another CVE’s threshold.
- Repeat on relevant hosts. Check each Azure VM or server where the affected PowerShell installation is present. A result from one machine does not establish the version on other hosts.
- Validate workloads after updating. Test the scripts and modules that depend on PowerShell. If a script or module breaks, the PowerShell advisory says a temporary rollback is possible, but the script or module should then be updated to work with the patched release.
The PowerShell advisory FAQ recommends checking the version with pwsh -v, comparing it with the affected-version table, and installing an unaffected release. If the command is unavailable or the version cannot be established, the check has not confirmed that the host is patched; verify the PowerShell installation by the method used to deploy it.

What to install for each CVE
CVE-2026-26143
For PowerShell 7.4, use 7.4.14 or later in that branch; for 7.5, use 7.5.5 or later in that branch. The cited affected-version information covers those two branches only, so it does not establish a threshold for 7.6.
CVE-2026-62801
Use at least 7.6.6 on the 7.6 branch, 7.5.11 on 7.5, or 7.4.20 on 7.4. The PowerShell advisory published September 11, 2026, describes the issue as relative path traversal leading to network-based remote code execution.

Use at least 7.6.5 on the 7.6 branch, 7.5.10 on 7.5, or 7.4.19 on 7.4. The advisory lists Windows, macOS, and Linux as affected.
These are minimum fixed targets for the specific branches and advisories listed, not a universal “latest safe PowerShell” number. If a host is affected by multiple CVEs, choose a release that satisfies every applicable advisory.

Does Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition need a separate check?
Yes, if that is the exact server edition in use. Microsoft Support KB5066359 applies to Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition and addresses unauthorized non-administrator access during a brief window. It is a distinct Microsoft hotpatch item; it should not be treated as interchangeable with the PowerShell 7 CVE thresholds above.
Check whether KB5066359 applies to the deployment, and separately identify and remediate any PowerShell CVE affecting its PowerShell installation. The available information does not establish that every Azure VM, or every Windows Server Azure Edition deployment, is covered by this hotpatch.
