Short answer: AzuraCast has the clearer documented route for unattended radio automation: its server-managed AutoDJ assembles continuous audio from files assigned to playlists. RadioDJ is Windows radio-automation software, but its current official page does not establish a complete, supported path from RadioDJ to a continuous YouTube Live feed. Neither product should be treated as a complete YouTube video-streaming solution by itself: YouTube needs an encoder to send it an audio-and-video feed.
What each product does—and what YouTube still needs
Radio automation and YouTube delivery are separate jobs. An automation system chooses and plays audio; a YouTube encoder sends a compatible live feed to YouTube. For a radio-style YouTube channel, the complete chain is therefore: media and scheduling, audio playback, a video-and-audio encoder, a stable connection, and operational monitoring.
AzuraCast documents a server-managed station: AutoDJ, using Liquidsoap, assembles media, playlists, and live inputs, while a broadcasting frontend such as Icecast serves the resulting audio stream. AzuraCast manages those station processes. Its overview describes the software as built to run on affordable VPS hosts (AzuraCast overview).
RadioDJ’s official site describes Windows radio automation software. It says newer versions use an external encoder; version 1.8.2 had an integrated Icecast/Shoutcast encoder through plugins. Those details do not, on their own, establish a supported end-to-end YouTube workflow for current versions (RadioDJ official site).

AzuraCast vs RadioDJ: the practical differences
| Decision point | AzuraCast | RadioDJ |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Server installation; the project says it is built to run on affordable VPS hosts (AzuraCast overview). | Official site lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 (RadioDJ official site). |
| Automation evidence | Media assigned to playlists can be composed by AutoDJ into a stream “24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” This documents a capability, not guaranteed host or station uptime (AzuraCast Media Management). | The official landing page describes radio automation, but does not make the same explicit continuous-runtime statement (RadioDJ official site). |
| Playlist operation | Uploads need to be assigned to at least one playlist for AutoDJ playback. Rotation and scheduled playlists are documented; advanced users can write custom Liquidsoap rules (media guide; playlist guide). | The official landing page provides less detail on playlist scheduling and continuous operation than AzuraCast’s current documentation (RadioDJ official site). |
| Audio formats and encoder | The cited station documentation describes the AutoDJ and frontend architecture; it does not establish a complete YouTube video encoder configuration. | The official site lists MP3, WAV, WMA, and FLAC support and says newer versions use an external encoder. It does not establish the exact current audio handoff and video-encoder arrangement for YouTube (RadioDJ official site). |
| Complete YouTube Live setup established? | No. The documented radio station output still needs a compatible encoder path that delivers video and audio to YouTube. | No. Verify current version-specific integration and external encoder setup before relying on it for unattended YouTube delivery. |
| Cost and uptime comparison | Not stated in the cited product documentation for a like-for-like comparison. | Not stated in the cited product documentation for a like-for-like comparison. |
Which one should you choose?
Choose AzuraCast when the station itself should be server-managed
AzuraCast is the better-documented choice here if you want a server installation to manage AutoDJ, media, and playlists. Uploading a file is not enough: assign it to at least one playlist so AutoDJ can select it. Use the documented rotation and scheduling tools for programming, or custom Liquidsoap rules if you need more advanced behavior. Continuous AutoDJ output does not guarantee that the VPS, network, encoder, or YouTube feed will remain available without interruption.
Choose RadioDJ when Windows-based radio automation fits your setup
RadioDJ is a candidate if you want radio-automation software on Windows 10 or 11 and are prepared to arrange the encoder side separately. Its official site describes the software as “One of the most advanced radio automation software available for free!” That is the site’s promotional wording, not an independent evaluation. Before building an unattended YouTube channel around it, verify the current version’s audio handoff and the supported external encoder and video arrangement with current product documentation.

Do not choose by assuming either is a one-click YouTube solution
The available official descriptions do not establish a current, supported RadioDJ-to-YouTube recipe, and AzuraCast’s documented radio station architecture is not itself a complete YouTube video feed. In either case, establish the encoder path and test the whole chain before depending on it to run unattended.

How to build the YouTube side of the workflow
Once your automation system is producing the audio, configure an encoder to send YouTube a video-and-audio stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions require the YouTube Live server URL and stream key to be entered in the encoder (YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder).
- Enable live streaming in advance. For a first-time live stream, YouTube says enablement can take up to 24 hours. Complete that step before your planned launch, then create or select the stream in YouTube Studio.
- Choose an encoder path. Connect the radio automation output to an encoder that can also supply video. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS delivery, with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm that your chosen encoder and YouTube ingest settings support the selected combination (YouTube encoder settings).
- Enter YouTube’s connection details. Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in a shared screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set output parameters to match the stream. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to every setup (YouTube encoder settings).
- Provide a video signal. A radio automation system may provide audio without producing the video feed YouTube expects. Configure the encoder’s video source as appropriate for your setup, and verify that the outgoing feed contains both audio and video before starting a long session.
- Test the complete chain. Confirm that scheduled or AutoDJ audio reaches the encoder, that YouTube receives the feed, and that monitoring shows acceptable stream quality. YouTube advises monitoring stream quality and checking the local archive during operation (YouTube encoder tips).
Encoder interfaces differ, so there is no reliable universal menu path or RadioDJ plug-in recipe to give here. In particular, the current RadioDJ landing page does not verify which external encoder configuration completes this workflow. Check instructions for the exact versions and components you install.
Keep a 24/7 feed running without losing the replay
An always-on live feed and a preserved YouTube replay are different operational goals. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If replay preservation matters, keep a local recording or plan session boundaries rather than assuming one continuous broadcast will become a complete archive (YouTube: Archive live streams).

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Monitor the automation host, encoder, and network connection; an AutoDJ capability does not prevent failures elsewhere in the chain.
- Keep a local archive backup and check it during operation, as YouTube recommends (YouTube encoder tips).
- Plan what happens after a host restart, network interruption, encoder failure, or YouTube disconnect. The cited product pages do not establish comparable automatic recovery guarantees for AzuraCast and RadioDJ.
- Check music rights before broadcasting. Owning a file or being able to play it through automation does not establish permission to transmit it on YouTube; rights depend on the music and territory.

Costs and setup trade-offs
The cited AzuraCast and RadioDJ pages do not provide a comparable total cost or uptime figure for an always-on YouTube channel. With a self-managed arrangement, assess the costs and effort of the host or Windows machine, encoder, storage, network, and ongoing monitoring separately; do not assume that free radio-automation software makes the complete streaming setup free. AzuraCast is described as suitable for VPS hosting, while RadioDJ’s official site says the software is free, but neither fact establishes the total cost of reliable YouTube delivery.

Troubleshooting the common failure points
- AutoDJ is not playing an uploaded track: check that the file is assigned to at least one playlist. Uploading alone does not put it into automatic playback (AzuraCast Media Management).
- YouTube does not receive the broadcast: verify the server URL and stream key in the encoder, that live streaming is enabled, and that the encoder is sending a compatible feed. If the channel is new to live streaming, allow for YouTube’s stated enablement time of up to 24 hours (YouTube encoder setup).
- The stream is unstable or flagged for poor quality: compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current settings guidance. The appropriate bitrate depends on the chosen codec and video settings; avoid guessing a universal value (YouTube encoder settings).
- There is audio but no usable YouTube video feed: radio automation alone may not produce video. Confirm that the encoder has a video source and is transmitting both video and audio.
- A long stream has no complete replay: YouTube warns that a broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local recording and consider session boundaries if the archive is important (YouTube archive guidance).
- RadioDJ setup instructions do not match the installed version: its official site says newer versions use an external encoder and identifies version 1.8.2 as having an integrated encoder through plugins. Verify instructions against the specific installed version; the current official page does not establish a maintained direct YouTube configuration (RadioDJ official site).
Copyright and channel eligibility
Before putting a music schedule on YouTube, confirm you have the rights needed to broadcast every recording in the relevant territories. Automation does not make a track licensed, and the information above does not determine whether a particular catalog can be streamed. Separately, YouTube’s rules and enforcement apply to live content; check current YouTube policies for copyright and monetization rather than assuming that a continuous or prerecorded feed is eligible for monetization.
