For a direct YouTube radio livestream, RadioBOSS is the more straightforward choice: its manual documents sending audio to YouTube over RTMP using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. AzuraCast is a self-hosted web-radio platform; its documented RadioBOSS connection sends audio to an AzuraCast station over Icecast, not directly to YouTube. Choose AzuraCast for station-management features, or combine the two if you need both an AzuraCast station and a YouTube output.

What each product does

Decision point RadioBOSS AzuraCast
Primary role Windows radio automation and encoder software. Its manual documents RTMP output to YouTube. RadioBOSS manual A self-hosted web-radio station platform with playlists, DJ tools, public pages and relays. AzuraCast documentation
Direct YouTube setup in the documentation reviewed Yes. Configure a custom RTMP encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. The reviewed guides cover station streams and DJ clients; they do not document a direct YouTube video-output path.
How they connect to each other Can send an audio feed to an AzuraCast station using its Icecast connection details. Receives RadioBOSS as an Icecast broadcaster; AzuraCast recommends Icecast for DJ connections because Liquidsoap intermediates them.
Automation and station operations Playlist generation and scheduled playback are documented; it can run unattended after setup. Provides station playlists, individual DJ accounts, browser-based Web DJ, public pages, listener requests and remote relays.
Platform and edition notes Windows software. AzuraCast’s guide says live broadcasting requires RadioBOSS Standard or Advanced, not Express. Self-hosted; you are responsible for keeping the installation current.

Which one should you choose?

Choose RadioBOSS for direct YouTube output

If the main goal is to send scheduled music or a radio-style audio program to YouTube Live, RadioBOSS has the more direct documented workflow: configure an RTMP encoder and enter the YouTube destination URL and stream key. That recommendation reflects the documented capabilities, not a hands-on reliability comparison.

Choose AzuraCast for station management

AzuraCast fits operators who want a separately managed internet-radio station with DJ accounts, playlists, browser-based broadcasting, public station pages, requests or relays. Its documented RadioBOSS workflow makes RadioBOSS a live audio source for that station; it should not be mistaken for a documented direct YouTube output setup.

Use both when you need both destinations or roles

You can configure RadioBOSS to send audio to an AzuraCast Icecast connection and separately configure an RTMP output to YouTube. The documentation describes those workflows individually, but does not establish simultaneous-output limits, a specific dual-destination configuration, or its reliability. Confirm the behavior in your installed versions before depending on both outputs for a broadcast.

Set up RadioBOSS to stream directly to YouTube

  1. Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for your channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this ahead of the broadcast.
  2. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube.
  3. Add a custom RTMP encoder in RadioBOSS. Open Settings → Options → Broadcast → Custom Encoders, add a custom encoder, and choose RTMP.
  4. Enter YouTube’s connection details. Paste the RTMP server URL and stream key into the encoder’s destination fields. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.
  5. Set the visual background. Specify the background image or video RadioBOSS should use for the YouTube output. Install the plugin if RadioBOSS prompts you to do so.
  6. Add and start the broadcast encoder. Add a broadcast encoder that uses [rtmp] and the custom encoder you created, then start the encoder. Check the Live Control Room preview to confirm YouTube is receiving the feed.
  7. Complete the YouTube go-live action if prompted. For a scheduled stream, use YouTube’s scheduling workflow; when it is time to broadcast, connect the encoder and use the Live Control Room go-live action if YouTube requests it.

Exact YouTube Studio labels and prompts can change. Check the current Live Control Room instructions for your account if a control is named differently or YouTube requests an additional step. YouTube describes encoder streaming and stream-key setup in its encoder live-streaming guide.

Connect RadioBOSS to an AzuraCast station

  1. Get the AzuraCast connection details. In AzuraCast, open the station’s Streamers/DJs page and copy the credentials for the broadcaster account you will use.
  2. Add a RadioBOSS broadcast encoder. In RadioBOSS, add an encoder and choose Icecast.
  3. Enter the station credentials. Configure the encoder with the connection details from AzuraCast, then connect and verify that the station receives the broadcast.

AzuraCast recommends Icecast for DJ connections because Liquidsoap intermediates those connections. This setup feeds the AzuraCast station; it does not replace the separate RTMP configuration needed for direct YouTube output. RadioBOSS live broadcasting is listed in the AzuraCast guide as available in Standard and Advanced editions, not Express. See AzuraCast’s RadioBOSS connection guide.

Scheduling and archives

YouTube supports encoder-based broadcasts as well as webcam and mobile streams. A scheduled stream can be promoted, and viewers can receive reminders. YouTube’s guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify current account eligibility and Live Control Room prompts because platform rules and interfaces can change. Music rights and channel eligibility

Before broadcasting music, confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed for the recordings and compositions in your playlist. A radio-style format does not by itself grant permission to stream copyrighted tracks. Also check YouTube Studio for your channel’s current live-streaming eligibility and any restrictions. Do not assume a scheduled playlist is exempt from YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules.

Keep a YouTube radio stream running around the clock

With a local RadioBOSS setup, the computer, network connection and configured software must remain available for the stream to continue. If you want uploaded recordings to loop on YouTube without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it runs an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than by quality tier. StreamNeo can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, plus playlists, 24/7 looping and StreamNeo team support. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-streaming service. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • YouTube shows no incoming feed: Check that the RTMP URL and stream key were copied into the correct RadioBOSS custom encoder, then confirm the encoder is running. If the key was reset in YouTube Studio, replace the old key in RadioBOSS.
  • The stream connects but YouTube has not gone live: Look for a go-live prompt in the Live Control Room, especially for a scheduled broadcast. Connecting the encoder and making the broadcast public may be separate actions.
  • RadioBOSS cannot connect to AzuraCast: Recheck the Icecast selection and the broadcaster credentials copied from AzuraCast’s Streamers/DJs page. Use the AzuraCast-provided connection details rather than YouTube’s RTMP URL or key.
  • The live-broadcast feature is unavailable: Check the RadioBOSS edition. The AzuraCast guide identifies Standard and Advanced as supporting live broadcasting, not Express.
  • A playlist runs locally but does not reach the intended destination: Confirm which output you configured. The AzuraCast Icecast encoder feeds the station; YouTube requires its own RTMP output configuration.

Costs and limits to check before committing

The documentation reviewed does not establish comparable current prices for RadioBOSS and AzuraCast, nor does it provide performance or uptime benchmarks. AzuraCast is self-hosted, so account for the server and the work of maintaining the installation; the exact cost depends on your hosting choice and operating needs. Check current vendor terms for software licensing and hosting before choosing. For a cloud alternative that runs uploaded videos to YouTube, StreamNeo offers daily, weekly, monthly, six-month and yearly billing; check current plans.
